The La Sportiva Spire GTX was easily one of our review team's favorite shoes. They combine some of the best hiking shoe technology with a comfortable fit and excellent traction to create a shoe that's fit for everything from day hiking and climbing approaches to technical mountain scrambles and backpacking. They resemble trail runners &mdash; fairly light and technical &mdash; rather than a rugged hiker, but they kept up with any terrain or objective we through their way. The upper is flexible and comfortable. The midsole is solid and supportive. The traction is bomber. The happiest surprise with the Spire is that the Gore-Tex Surround waterproof liner is also breathable. Yes, you can wear these on a trail run, but they shine on multi-day hikes and light-and-fast mountain adventures. For scrambling off-trail, peak-bagging, or enjoying any trail we came across, these hikers are exceptional.
Over months &#40;and years!&#41; of rigorous testing, we have had to replace the laces on the Spire a handful of times. They have thin nylon lace holsters that wear down the laces over time –- especially if you prefer a snug fit. Beyond the laces, these hikers proved to be exceptionally durable, but all the technology that makes them so incredible comes at a price. As one of the spendiest options we tested, this shoe may not be an affordable option for some. But for those planning hiking adventures where comfort, support, and performance are a priority, the cost will be well worth it.

The La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX easily pulled ahead in our tests. Though it is the heaviest boot in the review, it has the highest climbing performance of any of the boots. It is a beefy, durable boot that is insulated and fully waterproof with a full leather upper and metal lace grommets. It has the most sophisticated lacing system of the boots we evaluated, allowing the wearer to customize tightness and fit, while providing excellent heel-lock for steep ice climbing and front-pointing. This boot performs for ice climbing, mixed climbing, and mountaineering.

La Sportiva's Trango Alp is a very durable summer mountaineering boot. It is made of mostly leather, which improves its durability, and also adds a little bit of warmth to an otherwise un-insulated summer mountaineering boot. This may be a pro or a con depending on your uses, but we loved it for the ability to stretch the summer season and use a lighter pair of boots for more of the year. The leather also provides a supple, natural feel when hiking and climbing, flexing smoothly with every move, and a comfortable toe box ensures more comfort on the trail. The partial shank guarantees excellent smearing and edging on alpine rock routes, by allowing the toe to flex, which increases dexterity and improves confidence in your footwork. 
The Alp is not optimized for snow, however, and is not designed at all for ice climbing. It has a rounded toe, so it cannot be used with step-in ice climbing boots that have a metal toe bail. &#40;This smooth, rounded toe makes it much better for rock climbing&#41;. The partial shank also means it is not as easy to kick flat steps in steep snow—but gives it some forward rocker to make hiking and scrambling much more fluid. The leather also adds a little weight when compared to the Trango Cubes. We felt this was well worth it, overall, due to the improved comfort and climbing dexterity of a leather boot, as well as the excellent durability.

Though not ideal for vertical ice climbing, the La Sportiva Trango Cube GTX is a top-notch, three-season alpine boot that excels at hiking and rock climbing. It is incredibly lightweight and nimble, allowing the climber to move light and fast over snowy and rocky terrain. Footwear is arguably the best place to focus on going lightweight—just think of how many times you lift each foot en route to the summit, and suddenly shaving a few ounces becomes a much, much more significant savings.
The Cube is a lightweight specialist, however, which comes at a cost to durability. That makes it a great "sending" boot for your fast-and-light missions, but it might not be your best choice for regular trips in rugged terrain. If you have a quiver of boots, however, this one will be beloved for its lightweight, tennis-shoe-like feel, and your body will thank you at the end of a long day. 

Switchback Travel

Many of the designs on our list are lightweight or almost trail runner-like in nature, but La Sportiva’s burly Spire is backpacking-ready—or just about as close as a hiking shoe gets. It feels sturdy and substantial with good stiffness and a thick midsole, effectively isolating you from rough and rocky trails (La Sportiva even goes so far as calling it a low-cut hiking boot). Throw in excellent protection and grip over a variety of terrain, plus a quality build that we’ve come to expect from this Italian climbing brand, and you have one of the more capable hiking shoes on the market.

Why isn’t the La Sportiva Spire ranked higher? At nearly 2 pounds, it’s heavy for a low-top hiking shoe and sits relatively high on the ankle. Second, the $199 price tag makes it the most expensive model on this list, even topping the high-end Arc’teryx Aerios FL below. Finally, we appreciate the accommodating fit that should work well for most foot types, but the shoe is a little wide at the heel and we had to cinch it down tightly to avoid slippage. These issues aside, it’s hard to knock the performance chops or build quality of the La Sportiva, and it offers a nice step up in on-trail performance and durability compared to the TX4 below... We hesitate recommending many of the shoes here for much more than hiking on established trails, but the burly La Sportiva Spire GTX is a notable exception. In short, the Spire is about as close to backpacking-ready as a hiking shoe gets—with a relatively high collar, La Sportiva goes so far as calling it a low-cut hiking boot. The thickly cushioned yet relatively stiff midsole offers a great balance of comfort, protection, and support, which comes in handy for high-mileage days and off-trail scrambling. Throw in excellent grip, good breathability (for a waterproof design), and the top-shelf quality we’ve come to expect from this Italian climbing brand, and you have one of the more capable hiking shoes on the market.

But the Spire isn’t for everyone: At $199, it’s the most expensive pick on this list, even topping the high-end Arc’teryx Aerios FL below. Second, with a rather stiff and heavy build (1 lb. 10.2 oz. for the pair), it’s definitely more shoe than most day hikers need. Finally, the Spire is only offered in a waterproof version, which is great for early-season snow and colder weather, but is prone to overheating on mid-summer days at low elevation. Most day hikers will want to look elsewhere, but for backpackers and those frequently traveling off trail or above treeline in areas like the High Sierra or Colorado Rockies, the Spire offers an excellent combination of support, durability, and protection.See the La Sportiva Spire GTX

The La Sportiva Spire GTX will be most appreciated by those whose feet run long and narrow-to-average and whose style preferences lean toward the athletic. It's a shoe that combines the lightweight, grippy breathability typical of a classic trail runner with the waterproof lateral stability of a low-rise hiker. The upper is soft and flexible, the midsole solid and supportive, and the Gore-Tex Surround liner as breathable as it is waterproof, making this a great option for those who bounce between trail runs and light-and-fast day adventures. For some, the Spire proved a top choice no matter what terrain or objective lay ahead. Other testers experienced less optimal results. Why? Ultimately individual fit is both subjective and the key to any great shoe, and subtle differences in length and width, or nuances in individual foot structure, can make all the difference. This is why we highly recommend taking the time to test drive any option up for consideration.
For technical mountain scrambles, peak-bagging, or light day outings, the Spire scored highly. With thick, deep lugs, it provides solid traction on dirt and dry rocky terrain. But in slick conditions, the outsoles generated limited confidence despite the hefty appearance. And when faced with multiple days under pack weight, testers questioned whether the shoe was appropriately rugged and supportive enough for the job. The laces also proved problematic, requiring frequent stops to re-tighten for adequate fit and wearing down quickly due to friction within the thin nylon lace holsters. But overall, this shoe is exceptionally durable in materials and design, and the lightweight technology makes it a favorite. As one of the spendiest shoes we tested, the Spire GTX is not for everyone. Yet, where speed, comfort, support, and performance are a priority, the cost will be worth it.

 I kind of have like wider toe like wire toe area, and I find that these are particularly narrow toes, so my feet were definitely getting. My toes were definitely getting crunched up and squashed inside of them, so they were not a great fit for me. I normally. Okay, so officially in terms of sizing, my feet are from heel to toe or technically a size 10

 They would just get like you know, squash together, when I go downhill in these. Also, these things have kind of a big heel. You know there's kind of a pretty big heel to toe drop on these. I prefer the whole like zero drop flat, sole tie, my style they are, they are quite comfortable

 If oh yeah, okay, so I think they'd be pretty good boots if they were wider in the toe area. For me mainly, and if it had less of a you, know, heel to toe drop and a few things like that, but overall pretty good boots and that's pretty much all I have to say about them.  When I, when they're kind of like these tubes, I find that you're, it's a lot easier to just kind of pull the whole. You know all the laces and then they tighten up a lot better um. Let'S see what else I like that it's got this nice toe bumper in the front, for you know, abrasion resistance, all right, and then I'm gon na get to a couple things that I okay.   Exchanged them for another pair and my current pair are fine in that regard.  I have to say these shoes are VERY comfortable right out of the box!!! No break in period time required!!!! They fit extremely well and feel VERY sturdy and able to handle any kind of terrain.  I had been hoping for the "holy grail" of hiking shoes and had such high hopes for these!!!! There is one draw back that I cannot get over though.

This is the second pair of these I have tried. The first pair had a quality issue on the toe area in the left shoe.  Exchanged them for another pair and my current pair are fine in that regard.  I also find that the laces on these shoes don’t tighten well and I often have had to re-tie or be creative with lacing because they don’t feel fully on my foot. These have all the right elements of the shoe I need, but they just aren’t working out.

 The first trip yielded my regular blister I get on the side of my toe but overall the shoes felt narrow. The second trip left me with an entire nail bed turned into a blister, knee pain which I’ve never had, and some other squished toes. I also find that the laces on these shoes don’t tighten well and I often have had to re-tie or be creative with lacing because they don’t feel fully on my foot. These have all the right elements of the shoe I need, but they just aren’t working out

  Nice toe protection which I miss on my Bushidos.  Sole is much stiffer than the Bushido trail runners and twice the heel to two drop. I'm going to try the Kaptivas GTX instead as they appear to have a more snug fit. I have narrow feet with an average arch

Awesome Grip - Too Wide for Me

Things I love: the tread is AMAZING, it's absolutely waterproof, I don't worry about rolling ankles, plenty of toe room.

I did not buy these for walking on trails.  I walk my dogs every day for around 3 miles in the city and sometimes on gravel.  I needed something that would work in winter.  I have very very difficult feet to fit, high arch, very high instep bone, longer toes, wider in front and very narrow heel

  Plus I'm older now and you start to get arthritis in your feet.  I have three old pairs of Vasque Trail benders that are a lightweight non-waterproof trail shoe, more like a beefed up tennis shoe.  Those don't fit well any longer and could not wear them at all anymore until I found these thin rubberlike flat insoles to use inside plus they are no good for winter.  My old Ahnu leather shoes are now killing my feet

Usually the left foot feels pretty good but the right foot which is smaller seems to find ridges and bumps that make it uncomfortable

Excellent shoe

  I ended up getting a size 39 which is 7.5+, and they fit great.  The laces are round which I find slightly annoying as they seem to loosen up more than a flat lace.  The sides near the ankles are higher than the Keen hiking shoes which may bother some people, but it was fine once I got used to it

I am pleasantly surprised with how comfortable these are straight out of the box.  The sizing is wonky so it was hard figure out what to get.  For reference, I wear size 8 in Saucony running shoes and 8.5 in Keen hiking shoes

Go ahead and buy these shoes.

 The only reason I am giving them a 4/5 is they ran narrow through the toe box. I adjusted the laces back one hole from the toe which worked great as long as I was on flat surface, (which is basically all we have to train on) but on rocky and steep terrain I found that I wished I had something wider through the front part of the shoe. I wear an 8M in a Brooks running shoe and I ordered these shoes in a 7.5 and 8 and ended up keeping the 7
