I’m looking to get a semi auto after using my Cafelat Robot for a bit. I drink espresso/americanos and my wife likes iced lattes, so I was looking at single boiler machines like Lelit Victoria, or even a HX like the Mara X. After lots of surfing, I can across the Quick Mill Carola Evo and I think I’ve found the format I want:

* No steam
* PID
* Shot timer

I’m not married to an E61 either. 

Is the Carola Evo worth getting? Are there any alternatives in a similar price bracket? ($1000ish).

2020 Best Single Boiler Espresso Machine: Lelit Victoria

Apologies if this is a ridiculous question, but I'd like you to tell me if I'm missing something. Here's my dilemma... 

After a brief, misguided dalliance with a DeLonghi Dedica, I'm now in the market for my first proper home espresso setup. I'm looking to buy something that will last me a decent amount of time and help me grow my skills over a few years. 

Having done my research into grinders, I'm fairly set on the Niche Zero, in part because it seems like a really solidly built, effective grinder and in part because in white it would look sick in my kitchen. But when it comes to the espresso machine, I'm really struggling. 

So far as I can tell, my options are:

1) Spend around £400 on a sub-optimal single boiler machine. This is likely to be either a Sage Bambino (which is largely made out of plastic and has an annoyingly sized 54mm portafilter that won't fit with the Niche's 58mm grind cup) or a Gaggia Classic (which has poor temperature stability and steam pressure unless I'm willing to spend another £100 and several hours modding it). 

2) Spend around £1300 on a low end DB/HX machine like the Profitec 300, Sage/Breville DB or Rocket Apartamento.

To me, the first option feels like it will leave me frustrated, while the second seems like a jump in price that's extremely hard to justify as a relative novice. So my big question is, why have no espresso machine manufacturers filled what seems to me like a blatantly huge gap in the market? All I want is to milky coffees one at a time to a consistently high standard. To this end, I would be happy to spend £500-1000 on a single boiler machine with a PID, a 58mm portafilter and good steam functionality. Surely I'm not the only person in this situation. Why does such a machine not exist? Or am I missing something? I'd be really grateful for people's thoughts.

P.S. I know I should probably have considered the Rancilio Silvia, but my understanding is that it suffers many of the same issues as the Gaggia. Also it looks like a 1980s fridge.

Why is there such a huge gap in the market between the Gaggia Classic and the cheapest HX/DB machines?

My beloved Barista express broke last week, luckily it was in warranty so I can either get my money back or get a brand new one.

I&#39;m tempted to spend a bit more cash and upgrade somewhat. I have had the BE for over 2 years and in that time it turns out my coffee habits are regular but boring - it&#39;s pretty much a daily americano for me &amp; my partner, all of the milk frothing stuff never gets used. The main issue with the BE (which seems to be agreed with in the community) is that the grinder is not great - you can pull 2 coffee&#39;s with the same beans 2 minutes apart and results will differ.

Ideally I just want a simple solution that can simply make a good shot - I already do the weighing of the beans and timing it etc etc so I don&#39;t really want one that guides you through the process. Anything above this requirement is wasted resource

Googling around it seems a dedicated expresso machine and grinder may be a good option - makes sense.

I&#39;m, looking to spend £`1000 in total (max) including any additional equipment, a Gaggia classic pro comes in at £420 ish so I was thinking get one of these and a similarly priced grinder and keep the change. The Gaggia&#39;s generally seem to be best at the price point and seem to be better at making shots than the BA, although they do have their weaknesses - issues with heat stability is a common complaint.

What is anyone&#39;s thoughts?

Take the easy life and get another BA? Part of me thinks as I only have Americano&#39;s is may not matter too much anyway, although the inconsistency will still be a pain.

Get a Gaggia classic pro and find a grinder 

Find something else under the 1k mark? If so - suggestions welcome ;)

Help replacing Barista express / Sub £1K setup

Hi all, first post here. I was gifted a Starbucks Barista espresso machine and its really gotten me interested in the world of espresso. Ive been using it for about 6 months now, daily. It makes....something. Something dark, with a bit of Crema, and it tastes like espresso. But I have nothing to compare it to except the rare chance I get to go to a quality coffee shop.

Anyway, I am wondering if this machine is even capable of making proper espresso (pressure, temperature etc). I have been reading a lot of articles saying appliances less than $400 probably aren't capable of true espresso. And yes, I have a quality grinder capable of a very fine, conical burr, espresso grind.

I am considering "upgrading" to the Gaggia Classic pro because it seems like a quality machine that fits my budget.

But honestly, if the Starbucks Barista machine is at all capable, I would rather not get more "stuff". I am kind of a minimalist at heart and hate consumerism in general....but at the same time, I am really really interested in being able to produce high quality espresso daily and to share with the random friend that comes to my house.

Starbucks Barista espresso machine any good?

My latest coffee corner! Anyone using the same machine/s? 😆😆

A little background, I’ve owned three espresso machines since I’ve started making myself espresso drinks at least 15 years ago. All 3 of them were what I consider junk, but I’ve been in no position to own anything else.  I started out with a $40 mr coffee thing and a blade grinder which got me out of high school and through most of college. I then got a ~$80 unit that did the job for a while until I moved to a place that had super hard water and got to the point that vinegar just wasn’t fixing it and it was ultimately dead. 

I learned about using distilled water to protect the heating/steam components and for the last 5 years, I’ve had success with the $200-$250 Hamilton beach that was given to me for Christmas right after the last ones death. Sometime along the way, I bought a $45 Krups burr grinder and stopped having issues with clogged grounds in the portafilter. 

That brings us to this morning. after brewing 7 shots for myself and my family, the lights stopped working when I went to steam some milk and it won’t function on either brew or steam.  So basically just died out of the blue.  Ugh, I hate junk. But I was broke for so long…

I had been hoping to wait another year or so to buy a *Real* espresso machine, especially considering the 4 digit price tags of even the entry level, quality brands. We just had our second baby and we’re a little more overextended at the moment than we’d like, so we’re trying to minimize sizable purchases. An espresso machine wasn’t on the immediate needs list, until now…

It would mean the world to me if y’all have some suggestions for a high quality machine that isn’t going to break the bank for me.  I don’t want any more junk, but I can’t afford a nice la marzocco linea mini either.  I really don’t know what my wife’s gonna be willing to agree to spend here, so if there were some recommendations at a couple different price ranges and why one might want to spend that much more, i would be forever thankful.

Help! My junk espresso machine died sooner than I planned and I don’t know what to upgrade to.

I am getting close to buying a Caffelat Robot. 

I have just gotten a Niche Zero grinder and realize I could now make a truly outstanding cup of espresso if I got a decent machine. I enjoy the coffee my Jura makes, but I think that I could do even better and would like to try. (I will keep the Jura, mostly for my wife to use, and for me when I don't have the time).

The alternatives that I am considering are semiautomatic machines, the Gaggia Classic Pro and the Rancilio Silvia. I wouldn't want to spend more than $800 unless there were a truly compelling product available.

Correct me if I am wrong but my reasons, based on reading reviews and watching videos, are:

1. If used correctly, the Robot can make espresso as good or nearly as good as the finest semiautomatic machines.
2. The Gaggia and the Rancilio are somewhat flawed and require modifications to improve their process, whereas the Robot is good to go out of the box.
3. Nearly any of the semiautomatics, with the exception of the Breville Bambino, require &gt;10 minute warm up times. My coffee drinking is fairly spontaneous throughout the day. My wake up time is very irregular too, so a morning on timer probably not a great idea, unless I wanted to leave the machine on until about noon or so. (Side question: does anyone leave their machine on all morning? Does it use a lot of energy if you do?)
4. The Robot has a small footprint and seems to be very simple to clean and little maintenance is required.

The main downside of the Robot from what I can gather, is that it's a physical challenge to press the levers down hard enough to create an adequate pressure. Also there is no steaming wand (I do not put milk in my coffees, but my daughter may start to drink coffee at some point and I am sure she would love lattes).

So, any advice before I buy?
