Design and features Logitech's G13 is an interesting add-on for those who don't have enough macro keys already — particularly the WoW crowd or laptop gamers. Designed to sit on the left-hand side of your keyboard (as is evident from the thumb stick being placed on the right and being non-removable), it features 28 customisable buttons (22 "G" keys, a four-way thumb stick and two buttons on either side of this) which through Logitech's software can be assigned either single keystrokes or user-definable macros. You can also set how often the macro repeats (that is, whether the button needs to be held down or whether it's a toggle), insert unicode supported text blocks, assign a shortcut, or set it to be an email, web browser, media player, calculator or My Computer quick launch button. You can disable some keys if you keep hitting a button by accident, rather than swearing uselessly at it or setting a key that no one hits

 Macros can be recorded including delays, delays and mouse events can be inserted, events deleted, and even new events recorded before or after a specific entry, yet for some reason the edit option is greyed out, meaning you're unable to edit any mistakes — you have to delete the error, and restart the recording from the correct point. You can also get the screen to display the macro name if you need confirmation. If you're particularly hardcore, you can associate LUA scripts with each button, and a script editor is included to help achieve this.        Logitech's software is easy to use

(Credit: Logitech) A nice feature is the ability to save your configuration profiles to the device itself — meaning you only need to install your driver, and you can import your favourite macros to any machine with ease. You aren't limited to just the one profile either, with the software letting you create, save and load as many as you like. Performance Comfort may be an issue for those with reasonably sized hands if you intend to use all the buttons. The G4, G10, G11 and G12 buttons (in a convenient WASD shape) have a depression in them to help you re-centre your hand, though due to the number of keys on the top and second row your hand will be spread quite wide to get from one side to the other

 If you're particularly hardcore, you can associate LUA scripts with each button, and a script editor is included to help achieve this.        Logitech's software is easy to use. Click on the button you want to customise, and follow the prompts. Clicking on the running man saves your profile to the device, while clicking the M buttons let you set backlighting colour

 Compared with even the best gaming keyboards, like the Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90, with 18 programmable macro keys, the G13 offers even more controls in a much more comfortable design.

The keypad portion of the G13 is well designed, with 22 programmable macro keys arranged so that your fingers will naturally fall into the correct playing position. The individual keys are contoured, with four dimpled keys in the center which default to the ubiquitous WASD buttons unless otherwise programmed. In addition to the sculpted keycaps, the entire keypad is curved to match the arc of relaxed fingers. The keys also have adjustable backlighting with a rainbow of colors to choose from

3 pounds. With grippy rubber feet, the G13 is very stable, so it won't slide or tip from the frantic pounding it might take in the midst of a match. The G13 connects through a wired USB 2.0 connection, and the 7-foot cable should be more than enough, even if you need to snake it down and around and behind to plug into an out of the way CPU tower

Not for FPS

  The huge flaw in the design is that there isn't a row for number keys. The widest rows are only 7 keys wide, and if you tried to use one of them for number keys, you'd lose the "Z" row of a standard keyboard layout. If you rely on the number keys for fast weapon switching, which is essential in many FPSs, you're SOL. In theory you could use a completely custom key layout instead of trying to match the left half of a QWERTY board, but then you'll make it difficult to naturally switch between the G13 and a regular keyboard

 On the plus side, there is a C# SDK for writing your own software that interacts with the LCD.  The G13 has decent ergonomics and is mostly comfortable to use, but feels strange because the keys aren't staggered like on a standard keyboard. I find the G16 key difficult to press. The backlight is almost fully customizable (it gets glitchy if you try to go for pure white) and kind of cool, but the keys don't show up very well if your head isn't directly over the G13 (mine is positioned in front of me on my desk, so the backlighting doesn't show well on the keys)

Not enough keys for a hardcore FPS gamer

  The build quality is excellent, this device is very sturdy and well assembled, if a bit bulky and heavy. It sports some rubbery pads on the bottom side to prevent sliding (works great in conjunction with a desk mat), and has intentional weight added underneath the key/LCD section of the keyboard. It's got a fairly large footprint and will take up enough space to render a normal size mouse-pad essentially full. The cord is plenty long to reach anything of importance unless you're substantially far away from your device

  The key presses themselves are a bit heavy for my liking, but I spoiled myself with using Cherry MX Red switches for a year before this. They seem like nice rubber-domed switches though. What would logically be the WASD keys on this gameboard are also equipped with a convex spherical protrusion from the center of the keys allowing your fingers to easily determine which keys they are to rest back on them after key presses. The small gray buttons near the analog stick has more of a click-y, springy feel to them instead, but still feel pretty good, if still a bit heavy

The LCD screen is nothing high-res or anything phenomenal or ground-breaking, but it certainly does it's job well and will display plenty of information to you, provided you have the Logitech Gaming Software, which is what I will discuss now

 The software is free, small in size, very sleek looking, and very simple to use.  From this software you can begin to take advantage of the best features of the gameboard. You are able to customize the backlighting color of the keys and the LCD panel to any color in the RGB spectrum using a color triangle and a percentage slider for R, G and B individually. The backlighting is, again, not terribly bright, but bright enough to distinguish the keys, and the option to change the color to anything of your preference makes up for it quite well

Amazing Customization, Great Features, Great Software, Great Build Quality

 If you're going to use the keys for WASD / ESDF you're better off getting the best keyboard you can find. Some reviewers say, "you have to get used to it." Of course this is true of any input device, but you should not have to get used to ergonomics. When people first use a mouse they have to get used to the input controls, but they don't say "Ouch, my hand is uncomfortable in this position

  -- My Current Setup -- Logitech MX Revolution Cordless Laser Mouse (Black)  Belkin n52te Tournament Edition SpeedPad  Microsoft Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000   For gaming I set the MX Revolution thumb forward / back / press to hold Shift / Ctrl / Alt, which multiplies the available functions on the n52. It is a very strong, comfortable setup that gives me quick access to many, many actions without resorting to the n52's horrible 'shift modes'. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking these up.

 Many others aren't using the stick. If you aren't using the stick, what is the point of a device like this? Using your thumb for movement frees up all your fingers for actions. If you're going to use the keys for WASD / ESDF you're better off getting the best keyboard you can find. Some reviewers say, "you have to get used to it

 Look at the g13 again... the keyboard section is totally flat, so you have to reverse the natural rotation by using your muscles to reshape your hand

Bad Ergonomics Ruin Tremendous Potential

Ultimately, the single thing that accelerated my ability to get used to the device was this: I created a large (full-size sheet of paper) template with the button configuration. I mapped each ability to a button -- it took a while to consider which abilities are used most and layout the abilities in with some organization that actually makes sense (I had to re-map 2 or 3 times until I found a layout that really "worked" for me

 So it would be NICE if some generic paper-templates were included or even a PDF on the disk that lets you print your own. This way you could label each button as a reminder of what action/command is bound to the button. It would really have been great if the profiler app had the ability to print the mappings (BTW, it can print them, but it's just a list.

 The cord is quite long and it would have been nice to replace it with a short cord.  Software: Mostly love it. Now that I know how to use it, there isn't anything I can think of that I can't actually do. A bit cumbersome to do the initial setup, but once everything is setup, moving from app to app & profile to profile isn't cumbersome at all

Long learning curve, but awesome once you learn to use it well.

  There are several nifty options for what to display on the screen, and I keep the performance monitor up when I'm not playing. There is a stopwatch, RSS feed, WMP feed, and several other things, most of which I have disabled. It auto-senses the game you're playing and loads up the profiles.  Overall: I am satisfied with my purchase and would hate to switch back to traditional keyboarding again

First of all, I am new to the world of MMORPGs. I got into WoW 100% off the bat, and within weeks went from feeble movements with wasd and clicking my abilities to mouse movement and keybindings. I quickly ran out of keys to bind that would be comfortable to use, and after a few hours my hand was in pain, so I began to look for something that would remedy that. After weeks of research, I decided to go with the Logitech G13

 I don't have great posture, and I use a corner desk, so I find it most comfortable to move the gamepad far back on my desk so that my elbow comfortably rests on the desk. The wrist support isn't overly padded so I don't get sweaty from keeping my hand there. There are a few buttons that I have to move my hand to reach, but I mapped less-used keys to those. I have 16 keys that I use frequently for my abilities, G3-G5, G10-G13, G15-18, and G21-G22, along with the joystick buttons, which I mapped for shift and alt

 The fix is to close out the logitech programs and restart them. I'm pretty sure this is happening because I took the software off my startup list, trying to make my computer more efficient, but I'm seriously considering letting it start itself so it will behave. The stability of the software wasn't an issue at all until I made this change. I've been quite happy with the ability to set it up once and just run with it

Significantly improves my gameplay, but has a few fatal flaws

 When you do that, it makes keybinding a lot easier since the software gives you a scrollable list of all the possible keybinds in the game labeled for what they do, e.g. "jump," "dodge," "open map" instead of the corresponding keys on the keyboard (space, v and m). So, instead of binding the G14 key to the spacebar for jump, you can just drag and drop the jump command over the G14 key and it is bound

 Using the joystick for movement frees up my index, middle and ring finger for using skills and lets my thumb do something more than hit the space bar. I was also a long-time console gamer, so I am used to using my left thumb to move my character, so this setup actually feels more natural. The joystick can also be used to activate skills (each direction can be a different action) if you still want to use the main keys for movement.  On the build quality, this is clearly a Logitech product as it is solidly built and exudes quality

 There are plenty of web posting showing how to replace the stock joystick with another one, so if you don't like the look of it, just change it out. Like others have said though, it is really hard to press it down, so I don't have that bound to anything important.  The software is easy to use and has built in profiles for most major games. As soon as I plugged it in and installed the software, the G13 scanned my system and found all compatible games and asked me if I wanted to download profiles for them, which I did

Solid gamepad!

 Lots of buttons, any button can be programmed to do whatever you want (even the joystick, which will work as expected no matter how it is set up). The logitech software has some non-intuitive features or interface areas that have been made far more complex than needed but is overall easy to use. Comparing the durability/sturdiness of this device as opposed to the Razer line is barely even a comparison, my razers always felt like they were falling apart in several different areas, this thing feels like it is built to last, my G13 has already outlasted all of the R. Most of the buttons work well  Cons: Ergonomics are definitely not a prime concern, the n52te/razer series are definitely more comfortable over long gaming periods, the way your hand rests naturally on the G13 is not so great compared to the razer series, there are buttons on the G13 that i would never use just because theres no way to comfortably get a finger over there

The profile switching buttons are the only part of the device that feels cheap, they are also slightly difficult to press, and don't always register presses. The left side of the device can get quite warm, i wouldn't call it outright hot, but its definitely warmer than i feel completely comfortable with, to be clear, i mean the actual side, none of the area where buttons are feel warm in the slightest

  My biggest concern about this device is that logitech appears to have zero interest in issuing software fixes for the required software to make the device work. There has been an issue with the device where whenever a computer goes to sleep, the device effectively stops working until the software on the PC is shut down and restarted, or the G13 itself can be unplugged and plugged back in, either will fix the issue. This issue was first reported and commented on by logitech in 2009, and since then, the issue has come up frequently in logitech forums, the developers are apparently aware of the issue and working on a fix, however that has been the state of it for almost 6 years now. I'm not sure if this issue affects 100% of my computers, but i tested it on all 3 of mine, and they all have the same bug, i have a friend who also owns a G13, and he also experiences the same bug with a completely different G13, the issue apparently can apply to anything that uses the 'Logitech Gaming Software', however i haven't looked into it in regards to any other devices

A great choice for a gameboard, but still several issues to work out.
