 Hi my name is Joe Mazza I'm with the Drum Center of Portsmouth and we're here today to do a shootout between the beloved Black Beauty 10 lug black nickel-over-brass against the newly released 8 lug version. So shell spec exactly the same edges hoops they both feature the Imperial lug but major difference 8 lug versus 10. Everybody has been clamoring for this the market's been asking for it and Ludwig delivered and we're very happy about it. Personally I'm a big fan of 8 lug snare drums and this just kind of cemented my thoughts you know what I've been hearing in the room today as we were recording this is the drum is open it has a little more overtone it's very loud when you when you really you know put the gas to it but it has the sensitivity at the lower levels and all the beautiful overtones are there

 Everybody has been clamoring for this the market's been asking for it and Ludwig delivered and we're very happy about it. Personally I'm a big fan of 8 lug snare drums and this just kind of cemented my thoughts you know what I've been hearing in the room today as we were recording this is the drum is open it has a little more overtone it's very loud when you when you really you know put the gas to it but it has the sensitivity at the lower levels and all the beautiful overtones are there. I was hearing the 10 lug kind of tighten up a little bit and focus a little more it still had the overtones but it had just a bit more of a focus of a point of a control and I think that's really just due to the mass that's bolted to the shell just adding those two extra lugs cuts down on the shell resonation. Oh and by the way you may have noticed that the 10 lug version of the drum that I was playing looks a little different don't freak out it's the same drum our friend John Aldridge engraved it for us it's part of our personal collection and it was the only one we had to AB against this so that's what we had to do

 Both drums felt very strong to me and I never felt like they were gonna top out or or die even at the the softest buzz roll press roll very sensitive very beautiful sounds so thank you Ludwig you guys knocked it out of the park with this one they're both tuned to a medium tuning we use the tune bot and they're both tuned very close we felt like at this tuning both drums could speak in the most broad way. The cymbals we used for today's demo were pysty formula 602 we have 15 inch heavy hats again 602 and we have a 20 inch modern essentials 602 crash which actually sounds like a great ride cymbal too. Ludwig Black Beauty Comparison - 8 Lug vs. 10 Lug

My birthday's coming up so I'm looking at some potential upgrades for my kit.  I've got a mid-range Ludwig drum kit with some high-end, Zildian Custom cymbals.  I'm between buying a 19" Custom K crash or going for a new snare drum.  I've always heard that cymbals are the first and most important thing to upgrade so that's what I did when I got this kit, but I only have one (17") crash cymbal and wouldn't mind having a second.

With that said, I feel like my snare is the weakest link right now given how important it is in the overall sound.  I don't think it sounds bad, but I'm not in love with it either.  I also feel like if I had a really great sounding snare that it might open up some new doors for me and get me even more hyped to practice.

I play in a band and we do a lot of typical popular cover songs you would expect to hear at a bar.  Nothing too heavy or crazy demanding on drums.  On my own time, I listen to a wide range of music but have always loved that upbeat snare sound you often hear in 90's music, Blink182, Green Day, etc.

I'm looking for that "all-around" great snare sound.  Something that will sound good no matter what you play and isn't too specialized for a particular genre.  The "ole reliable" of snare drums that I can play for years to come.  Budget isn't too big of a concern, if it's a good value I'll buy it. I figured around $300-$500 should probably cover it.

Snare recommendations

 And I was thinking, ah, this is not it. However, when I switched the heads, I did think, yes, this is much, much more in the ballpark. I will also just say subjectively being in the room and actually having my hands on both of these drums that you can feel that the fit and finish is better on the Black Beauty. But is it worth the price difference? And yes, there is a significant price difference

 We have different stock top and bottom heads, different snare wires. And then I thought the throw was actually the same on both of them. I thought it was the standard Atlas throw, but I think they've gone for a slightly cheaper version of the Atlas throw on the Universal because it doesn't have those little notches or those little gears that you're used to if you've actually used one of the Atlas throws. Also just subtle little differences like we've got metal washers on the Universal versus plastic washers which are actually preferable on the Black Beauty

 Same thing here, where if you want something very similar to a Black Beauty, but it's just hard to stomach, $900, absolutely grab one of these, replace the top and bottom heads, and I am sure that you are going to be happy with it. This is also a good option, too, if maybe you already have like a 5x14 or 6.5x14 Black Beauty, and you've always kind of wanted like an 8x14, but you just don't want to pony up another $900. This is a great option to have another size, but not break the bank

Ludwig Black Beauty for Under $400?

I am in the market for a new snare. I play semi regularly these days, band practice once a week and occasional gigs. Most practice is done on a pad at home.

I am looking for a solid, most band for my buck snare drum, which caters to me mainly playing music of the heavier variety but leaves me with some flexibility to mess around with different sounds. I don't want to (and am unable to) spend crazy amounts so let's say something that is under £300-£400.

I have never been much of a gear-head so any ideas welcome! Thanks all.

The mid-priced rock snare?

 For us, we thought that all the three tuning ranges sounded fantastic, however the low and the high tuning were perhaps the most characterful. The low has that instant, ringy, wet character that you've heard on countless rock, blues records, and the high has a really nice pock to it for that kind of funky attack. Equally, the high tuning is going to suit really well to metal or other up-tempo styles. It's definitely worth saying that pretty much no matter how you tune this drum, there's going to be an iconic sound there, so it's definitely a drum that could suit basically any style, and perhaps that's why they're so popular in the studio

 Equally, the high tuning is going to suit really well to metal or other up-tempo styles. It's definitely worth saying that pretty much no matter how you tune this drum, there's going to be an iconic sound there, so it's definitely a drum that could suit basically any style, and perhaps that's why they're so popular in the studio. Construction wise, there's nothing to complain about with these drums, they're really well made. The only little gripe that I have is with the strainer system, which is very wobbly once you throw off the lever, so it's often very finicky to get it back up into place again

 This is a drum that dates back to the 1930s, although initially it came out under another name. They ceased production for a few decades actually, brought them back in the 70s, and since then they've been just about the most popular snare drum, or certainly one of the most desirable ones. They've got an instantly recognisable sound, they are a studio staple, almost any studio worth its salt is going to have at least one Black Beauty hanging around. And similarly, if you're a collector of snare drums, you've probably got at least one or two of your own too

 And there you have it everybody, the Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum. Iconic snare drums, fantastic to play, so musical. These are the 8 lug versions. They'll go with any drum kit you have, any style of music

 What's cool about that is you can just go up in little tiny increments and get the snare wire tension exactly where you want it. So hopefully you can tell that the tuning of both these drums is really different. The 5x14 I have cranked really high and the 6.5 is nice and big and beefy

 They go everywhere, up and down, high tuning, low tuning, they're all in one. They're really well made. Let's get into some details of these two drums I have in front of me right now. After months of practicing rudiments on a practice pad I want to buy my first snare drum. I like jazz and was thinking Gretsch, but I’m also a beginner and don’t have much of a clue. Any advice?

 Very cool snare drum, a lot of fun to play, very inspiring. Now one of the reasons Ludwig is one of the most famous names in all of drum making is because of the Black Beauty snare drum and it's a snare drum that I definitely recommend that every drummer should have one in their collection. Really versatile, great sounding, has worked countless times over the years on tons of recordings, really well made. Let's get into the details right now

 Okay now I brought the snare drum down in tuning and I like to use this trick a lot. I'll show it to you, tell it to you, it's really easy to do. You take the lug that's directly in front of you, right in the center and you detune it all the way down until it's like completely loose. Then the lugs that are on either side of that center lug, you bring them down about half way, three quarters, you've got to play with it a little bit and it brings the tuning, well the tone of the drum down and it also dries out the ring of the drum quite a bit

 It's not too clicky, doesn't hurt the ears at all and it will definitely cut through any mix. That same triple flanged hoop along with this great brass shell gives you a killer back beat. Loud but very musical and will cut through any mix. Black Beauties will fit in any style of music
