The Marmot ROM 2.0 is one of our testers' favorite jackets for athletic climbing and skiing pursuits. This is a well-tailored piece that allows for base layers to be worn underneath, but it is still trim enough to be considered an athletic fit. Using a newer Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper fabric that effectively sheds light precipitation and blocks wind, this updated jacket also breathes incredibly well, making it a great option for breaking trail at a quick pace. 
The ROM 2.0 sports a single adjustment hood, wrist cuffs, and plenty of pockets to hold bars or extra gloves &mdash; or just to open up and dump some heat. Despite a slightly tight hood, it did so well during our testing period that we found it to be one of the best options for climbers.

Your casual woolen and flannel items make the most sense of all the items you've listed.

TLDR: don't drop $900 on 2 items both of which aren't going to be all that useful. Buy a down puffy in the $100-300 staying toward the low end and buy a soft shell and poncho instead of hard shell.

Moving from the SF Bay Area where I never need more than a light raincoat to Minneapolis area where they've got some real winter weather. Winter highs typically range from 8-25f in January, with many days staying below \*\*0f\*\*. 

I don't plan to do much hiking in the dead of winter, but will need go get around and do normal "urban" stuff while staying warm. This means that I will spend some time out in snow/sleet/rain/wintry mix/etc.

During the Shoulder Season and into the summer, I expect I'll do significantly more hiking and backpacking. 

No skiing or climbing planned.

1. Run \*\*warm\*\* and prone to sweating
2. 5'10", 195lbs, muscular/athletic
3. Prefer Slim Fitting
4. Prefer to own a few good versatile items than a bunch of hyper specific or "cheap" items.
5. Would rather buy nice than twice.

My preference would be to get several layers so that I can mix and match as the weather changes, but maybe that's not reasonable for how cold it'll get and how generally inactive I'll be in that cold? 

The following combo seems like it'd be \*almost\* but maybe not quite enough:

1. Wool/Flannel/wicking base layer (i.e. my indoor clothes)
2. Atom AR (Insulation)
3. Beta AR (Weather Resistance)

Can I add/swap a piece or two to this combo to handle the depths of winter or do I need to bite the bullet and get a Therme/Thorsen?

Recommendations for Minneapolis Winters + Year Round

Great piece

Not impressed with either the Gamma MX or Gamma LT. The fit being the main concern. Way way too slim fit. Yes I owned both at one point

I love my gamma lt but the cut is so slim I find it hard to layer under it, for example a proton lt for snowboarding. Any recos on a great soft shell with a helmet friendly hood, burly fabric, and good pockets? Thanks
