Obviously appliance reliability is highly subjective with most brands being both good and horribly bad depending on things like year, place of manufacture, features, etc.

Since online reviews tend to be ppl w/ negative experiences I’m hoping a reddit pole might provide a more broad idea of reliability! 

In ur PERSONAL experience of buying home appliances: 

1. What items + brand(s) have been the best? 

2. How long have you owned it + what kind of usage does it receive (heavy, regular, infrequent)?

3. If repairs have been done how was cost and availability of parts/assistance (or how helpful was the manufacturer in solving ur issue)?

My suggestion, and I cannot stress this enough, buy the extended warranty from Home Depot/Lowe's/other when you buy this washer. For ~2 yrs, it worked fine, but at some point, the agitator mechanisms will fail and you will find yourself without a functioning washing machine. You'll know this day is coming, because your spouse will ask "Is the washer supposed to sound like that? That doesn't sound quite right."

Also, be sure not to put too much into the washer. That'll cause you fits. And apparently accelerate the inevitable breakdown.

Buy the extended warranty.  Seriously.  Buy it.

So, we just found out our GE dishwasher that we put in \~two years ago will cost more to repair than replace. It seems GE was bought by a company in the last few years that puts out crappier products. Blarg!

What are some good long-lasting dishwashers (that can be repaired easily or cheaply) that you have experience with? Which ones are worth it?

*Edit: I really wish my partner or I could remember the brand of the dishwasher we had before this last one. It was the one that was new with the house that was built in 2006!*

I bought ours from Lowes and three years later the wash plate has stripped it's splines. I see a trend with the Whirlpool products were there is an issue they become aware of it and make a running change (adding a metal insert to the splutch pulley for example or change dishwasher try glide materials to those that won't destruct after 20 months) but you’re going to have to call a repair person to take advantage of the parts clause of the warranty so those that can make the repair do an chalk it up to experience and buy the part and install it. It seem endemic in the appliance industry right now.

The simpler, the better. I would avoid front loading washing machines as they tend to have many more issues with leaks and mold. I've always preferred top loading machines as they tend to have higher capacities and modern ones without an agitator work amazingly well. I have a Maytag high capacity top loader that we got about 3 years ago when we bought the house we are in now, its been a great machine

So if it were me, no questions, go top loader for better capacity and reliability, and keep it as simple as you can.

It takes about 5 minutes for it to start up as it figures out the load and if its too unbalanced it will chime at me and flash that its unbalanced

My house came with a washer and dryer. The washer is speedqueen, found a receipt and it was purchased in 1995. It is top load and still works. I believe it's time to get a modern one ( better washing, energy saver, etc). I was thinking of getting a new speedqueen. I like when things last long. However I am not sure about top or front load.

Reasons I dont like my top load washer
1. Cant put a lot of clothes.
2. I dont feel it washes the clothes good.
3. Uses a lot of water.
4. Its ruining my clothes little by little.

But I also heard bad stories about front load.
1. Mold.
2. Smell
3. Hard to repair
4. Expensive to repair
5. Etc

These things are not cheap to try one every 2/years. Thats why I am need your help. Thanks in advance.

My wife and I are looking to close on Sept 3, and we are in the market for a washer and dryer combo. After researching older posts on reddit, it seems like the 2 popular brand choices are Maytag and Speed Queen. We are aware that they are loud, and their capacity is less than the newer models, but they supposedly work as advertised, bomb-proof, and are easy to repair. Is this still the current opinion of the 2 brands? We have a Lowe's nearby that has the Maytag Commercial washer and dryer in stock. Has anyone had their big box stores (Lowe's, Home Depot, Best Buy) install a washer/dryer for them or are they pretty easy to install by yourself? Thanks for any feedback.

 I could hear it struggling and thought "oh no!". But no worries, Maytag has a 10 year warranty on the Drive Motor and it is an American company. One that has a reputation for excellent quality manufacturing and engineering. A company we can trust and rely on and be proud of

I called Maytag customer service, a technician came quickly, and diagnosed it was spline damage. The Drive Motor is covered under warranty but not the splines. The tub is covered under warranty but not the splines. The splines are required to make the motor and tub work together, and the splines take the most strain, but the splines are not covered under warranty

. but I am so disappointed in Maytag not standing behind its machine and not covering spline damage in the warranty. They should cover it. Splines are required to make the drive motor and tub work

 One that has a reputation for excellent quality manufacturing and engineering. A company we can trust and rely on and be proud of. An American company that will stand behind its warranty.

 She kind of giggled a little stating that was the warranty lines and nothing she can do. So I asked, “ What again another lid switch in 6-8 months when my last washer lasted 25+ years?”

 On my last and recent call earlier this week I inquired about the part replaced less than a year ago and the Maytag rep stated the warranty had expired for the machine and repairs made within the warranty period do not have a repair warranty assurance in place.

Don’t buy an untrusted product that is flawed by design.
