 Sitting directly in front of it with natural light coming in and having a light behind us and it shows how the image looks blurry and really lacking that crispness. We have seen much cheaper webcams perform better. An example of one is the Creative Livecam Sync which is currently available for just £24.99 and produces a much clearer image and you have the added bonus that you don't need to install any additional software for the microphone to work

 After installing we do get the option to enable the microphone but when we do this we are prompted with a message saying that it isn't certified for Microsoft Teams. This is a Microsoft webcam and Teams is buying Microsoft. How can this webcam not be certified? Anyway this is what the mic sounds like. The Microsoft Accessory Center does give you some basic options to change brightness contrast saturation and sharpness as well as the number of options for the white balance so you can have a play around with these to try and improve your overall image but we still couldn't get ourselves a crisp picture. With Windows Hello being used more often you would think that this webcam would be compatible but once again it's not which is really unusual as again it's a Microsoft webcam

 Loading up OBS and using the chroma key filter to remove our green screen and this did a very good job at removing it. There's a little green outline around our arm but this could be to do with our lighting setup and this can be adjusted using the settings in OBS. While I was very hopeful this would be an affordable webcam that's been updated to the Covid age to replace the aging Logitech 920, this camera unfortunately is not the one. Mounts well, but the privacy camera cover itself feels cheap and falls off easily. The problem is that the quality simply isn't good enough and seems somewhat grainy, even with lighting alterations.

 I also recorded the audio for the sample video with the Microsoft Modern Webcam's built-in microphone. Echo was present like with most webcam microphones but I also thought my voice was crisp and clear. The Microsoft Modern Webcam is a small all-in-one package with no detachable cables or accessories. This makes it ideal for travel and for use with smaller devices like laptops but it also leaves it feeling cheap and flimsy in places

 There is also a toggle to turn off the microphone on the software level. In an on move, the microphone is turned off by default as it doesn't meet Microsoft Teams certification. Surprisingly honest given that Microsoft makes this device. Despite that caveat, I actually found that the audio I recorded on the built-in microphone was crisp and clear

Microsoft Modern Webcam Review: New Mid-Budget Best

 Bottom line: I'll live with, and use it. However, if I was looking over the shoulder of someone who had one, I wouldn't buy one.

Simple Microphone

 I'm going to take away this band here and we're just going to plug in the USB-A to the back of my dock here and of course we're going to unplug and take off some of this plastic as well. To open it up I'm just going to peel that off put it to the side for now I like the fact that it's got a little mount here so you can attach things like a tripod or if not you can actually just open it up and clamp it onto your monitor and adjust the angle of it. So the unboxing is really quite quick we're just going to attach it now and get it installed. So attaching it is actually quite simple with one hand it's a little bit trickier you can see at the back here we're just going to open it up it's got a little stopper that will hang on the monitor just like this close it up and put it to the angle that you're after and then you can actually just again two hands makes it easier you can adjust the angle that you want the camera to sit at and it's actually nice and stable and secure there then I'm just going to grab the USB adapter and plug it into the back

 So you can see the privacy shutter here when it's closed you get the little Microsoft symbol and then you open up just slide it across and the webcam is open and activated. Alright so we've just installed the webcam it's connected a couple seconds and it's activated the drivers everything's downloaded and installed and we're going to jump now from the Surface webcam over to the Microsoft modern webcam to see if there's a noticeable difference in the quality. Alright swapping over straight to the Microsoft modern webcam in front of me the first thing I love is the fact that because I've got a monitor here I'm not having to turn my head to the side when I'm wanting to look at people when I'm on a call but the other thing I can notice is that the picture quality is actually way better on the Microsoft modern webcam than what it is in the Surface laptop 3. Now the Surface laptop 3 and the newer Surface laptop 4 they get a lot of great reviews for their awesome webcam but this Microsoft modern webcam actually takes it a step further and you can see the quality and the clarity from the 720p webcam to the 1080p webcam is definitely noticeable

 I plugged it into the USB-A port connected up within a second and of course in your team schools it's so easy to jump from one call to the other. I love the fact that the packaging is so minimal it's basically plug and play I definitely saw the benefit of it straight away and I think really for the price it's a top little webcam.
