 But I do recommend that everyone give serious thought to whether the convenience of an app is really worth what you pay in privacy. If you've got a bit of programming background, I also recommend checking out the midea-msmart repository by mac-zhou on Github. It's a work in progress to allow local control of this AC, independent of any third parties, and will hopefully come to full fruition as more people (finally) get these units and experiment with them.  Had I known that the air conditioner would take so long to ship and have such an involved installation process, I probably would have just gone to the store and bought a regular window unit at half the price of this one

 that the air conditioner would arrive on August 3.  Now, supply chain issues are understandable given the global pandemic, but the coronavirus doesn't infect inventory software and "saying something's in stock when it isn't" isn't a symptom. People buy air conditioners because it is hot and they need to be cool. If I'm hot and I buy an air conditioner that claims to be in stock, I expect to receive it in the timely manner stated - or at least before AC season ends

  Do I recommend this AC? If you:  -can think like (or are) an engineer, -are patient and detail-oriented, -value energy efficiency over most other things, -don't mind feeling a bit like a beta tester, and -don't think you'll need an AC until next year,  then yes.  But if you:  -are looking for a quick installation, -want to open your window without letting bugs in, -aren't willing to make a few on-the-fly mods to your AC and/or window, -are styro-phobic, or -just want to cool down without having to do any problem-solving,  then I'd suggest waiting for the next (hopefully improved) version of this AC and making do with a standard plop-it-in-and-go window unit in the meantime. This AC is a great concept and I hope that Midea continues to refine it, but in its current state, its quirks and complexity might not be worth it for the average user.

Intriguing concept, ingenious technology, occasionally infuriating execution

I bought this to replace the 14,000 BTU single hose portable unit I'd been using up in my attic bedroom. Though that unit had a higher power rating, it actually produced less cooling. By now I'm sure you've come to understand that especially single-hose AC units are terribly inefficient and actually have two BTU ratings, one for how much cold air it can produce through the vent, and one that takes into account the real-world usage of the product; blowing cooled air out of the house, creating negative pressure in the room, having the heat-generating unit inside the house, etc. So it's no surprise that this 10,000 BTU AC unit cools better than the effectively 8,500 BTU unit it's replacing

 Pretty wild comparison, comparing the least efficient to arguably one of the most efficient designs with nothing in between, but this is where I'm at and I don't have a lot of experience with "portable" (removable, non-permanent) AC units.  I let the box sit right-side-up for an hour or two before even unpacking it. No instructions to be found, but the layout of all the accessories inside the foam packaging was nice and straight forward. While removing the blue tape from the unit I popped off the filter cover and removed the doofy little USB WiFi adapter

  The next day I pulled it out of the frame and covered up the large gaps on the bottom side using the included black foam insulation tape. I really wanted the install to be as sterile and clean and elegant as their marketing wank CGI fictional idealized images show, but that is not reality. The install is fairly clean, but a lot of their directions (intended install practices based on the parts included) and marketing wank are in direct contradiction. They say you can use this unit so you have the option of having your window open

 I know that's not what's happening but it's rather irritating. I hope this thing lasts more than two years, I'll be pissed if it doesn't. I've removed a star since they have stressed SO hard how quiet the thing is. It's not that quiet when it's the only noise in your room

Seemingly excellent unit, with some exceptions

 The room was at 85 degrees. I decided to see how far the temp would drop in one hour as the peak heat of the day approached . So the unit was fighting the increasing exterior temperature while attempting to cool the interior. In one hour, the temperature dropped to a very respectable 75 degrees without my WebEx meeting warning me to mute my mic due to background noise

 Oh well at least it’s a home office and I am usually on the same network when I want to adjust it.  Once everything was installed and online, the most important part, the cooling test. The room was at 85 degrees. I decided to see how far the temp would drop in one hour as the peak heat of the day approached 

  In summary:  Installation: -6 stars IOT integration: 0 stars Noise level: 6 stars (I usually can barely hear it from the center of the room) Cooling: 3 stars (This rating is neutral as the summer isn’t even here yet but so far so good)  ORIGINAL REVIEW I wish I could write this review based on 1.   Alas, I've come to terms with the fact I will never have a window a/c unit that is good enough for me. To exist in this mortal coil during the summer, I must consume anti allergy medications.  Anyway, they could probably have done a better job at not sending me this unit. But I don't want to deal with getting a new one

 The last a/c was $50 per month but I also am very irresponsible with my energy use (a/c running and also open window to keep the airflow, because otherwise my small apartment smells like death).  Then I suggest to Mideau that you do a better job at your QA, you can't not bend the evaporator fins, but you can not ship those units to me.  Aside from the mildew (😡) this is better than the Frigidaire gallery.

Really not that great of an advantage over a traditional "in-window" accordion style AC

Installation requires some thought and effort to ensure that the proper pitch is achieved so that water from the condensation drips outside instead of inside the house. Also, they only give you just enough widow sealing side arm foam so if you cut it too short you are stuck.

The good, bad, and the ugly

Be very careful in buying this Unit. I have already had an Error Code (EC 54) Refrigerant leak and the seller and Midea company are No help in remediation after contacting. The units electrical cord is very short, make sure you measure from the A/C to the Outlet before installing or taken out of the box or purchased. Using an extension cord can void the Warrantee

Make sure that this Unit can easily be returned

 Sadly, a small bath room remains a furnace. Why don't they make a 2000 BTU for small bathrooms? I'd buy it! Better yet, make it a heat pump too. The bathroom is an icebox in winter. It seems to handle average summer temps and humidity well in the Mid-atlantic USA OK so far (one day)

 I have it in an attic like second floor in a Cap Cod home for a bedroom. Just under half the house plan. Needless to say, the BTUs needed for the second floor are about 16,000. So another 8000 unit in the other half of the second floor (another bedroom) do the job

 The hardware for the install seems well made but, again, lack of clarity and bad instructions really make it a challenge. Despite taking a week to figure it out before I went past the install of the support bracket, some things are just not well thought out in the engineering for this. The unit DOES NOT center on the window. So if you install the support centered, the unit will be off center

Tricky install… But once in *correctly*, a cheap alternative to ductless.

 Running flat out you can hear these thing but the are about 70% in my estimation of our old unit. I can stand in front of 12 unit and still hear people talking to me where with old one not so much. The nice thing is that these don't run at constant speeds. The compressor, outside fan and inside fan all run independently to maximize efficiency

 Prior the combined 18k btu of the window and floor unit barely kept up with the center of the house on a hot high 90's day with the doors to the bedrooms open and fans pushing are to the bedrooms. The bedrooms would be hotter.  Now with 8000 btu units in both ends of the house on the bedrooms and the 1 12k unit in the center we struggle with not getting to cold. So now a total of 28k btu over all and the whole house is nice and cool

 If you leave it a mode so that the fan runs all the time this doesn't happen. Not sure why that is as the thermostat is reporting in either case to the app. I'm not happy with this part of the units especially as it seems to be a software bug that should be easily fixed with a firmware fix that the app seems designed to do :)  Oh pricing.

 With the compressor on, I measured Watts used around 120w with an extremely low cooling demand, then with an extremely high cooling demand as high as 1200w (I bought the 12k btu unit). Ive also measured nearly every variation of watts between that range ..

 this one is a double edged sword (covered in CONS as well). While the traditional really loud hum from a non inverter AC compressor is absent, and a lot of the loud fan noise is absent, there is a much more pronounced high pitched whine on the outside portion(covered in CONS.)  CONS: 1. The worst part about this tech and this unit: HIGH PITCH WHINE from compressor

 Ive installed it as an additional overall jacket around the original jacket, and I think the whine was reduced quite significantly from that (its quieter on the outside(hence quieter on inside =P)) then before those "tweaks". 2. This may be a silly CON but.

)  CONS: 1. The worst part about this tech and this unit: HIGH PITCH WHINE from compressor. Now, if your hearing is destroyed an you cant hear 6khz or higher anymore then this will not bother you in the slightest. While the traditional loud low pitch noises from window ACs are absent on this unit, its mostly replaced by this unbearable whine

Tech: IMPRESSIVE w/ a one major caveat.
