The versatile Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer/2 reigns supreme as our favorite down jacket. Despite weighing a scant 8.5 ounces, this jacket manages to offer an incredible amount of warmth. At this weight and packability, there is no reason not to throw this into your pack as a just-in-case layer. The athletic fit is spot-on, accommodating wider shoulders so that overhead movement isn't impeded. We had no problem layering a fleece underneath, yet it's tailored enough that it doesn't feel bulky during activity. Its stretchiness, fit, and low weight made it an ideal jacket for climbing and other highly mobile activities, and we used it as both a standalone piece and as part of a layering system. As a standalone jacket, we were comfortable in temps down into the low forties and upper thirties. When temperatures started to drop below freezing, the addition of a lightweight fleece was all our testers needed to stay warm and cozy.  
Though the jacket has two zippered hand pockets, there are no internal stash pockets. Cutting down on pockets helps shave weight, but we'd love an additional internal or external chest pocket. Overall, this jacket is comfortable, good-looking, and, most importantly, performs incredibly well in a wide range of conditions.

A couple seasons ago, Mountain Hardwear revamped one of the original ultralight down jackets: its popular Ghost Whisperer. Now the “2,” the latest model features a small increase in weight (about 1 oz. for the men’s hoody) but comes with a number of notable upgrades. To start, there’s a little more 800-fill down stuffed inside, and the recycled shell is a bit thicker, which translate to modest increases in warmth and durability. But the jacket stays true to its roots with excellent packability and a simply phenomenal warmth-to-weight ratio, while including important features like zippered hand pockets, a hem adjustment, and decent wind and water resistance. For fast-and-light missions, the Ghost Whisperer/2 remains a go-to choice.

Unfortunately, two elements that have not changed with the Ghost Whisperer/2 are its fit and cuff design. Unlike the tailored cut that you get from Arc’teryx Cerium LT or Feathered Friends Eos, the Mountain Hardwear is boxy and awkwardly large in the torso. It still layers reasonably well under a shell, but we’re surprised they haven’t given it a better performance fit considering its intended use. Further, the cuffs are loose and don’t provide a very solid seal, which can let cold air sneak through unless you throw on a pair of gloves. For backcountry missions when every ounce counts, you’ll need a jacket that offers big warmth for a low weight. Enter the 7.8-ounce Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer/2, one of the most impressive jackets in its class. You get 2.5 ounces of premium 800-fill hydrophobic down in a package that stuffs down smaller than a 1-liter Nalgene (complete with a carabiner clip loop). Impressively, despite the low weight and small packed size, the Ghost Whisperer/2 doesn’t compromise much on functionality or features with zippered hand pockets, a hem adjustment, and decent wind and water resistance.

However, while the Ghost Whisperer/2 is built to resist a light chill at the belay or during a summer evening at camp, it’s notably less insulated than most other options here (when you factor in the difference in fill power, it’s approximately as warm as the REI 650 2.0 above). And although the Ghost Whisperer/2 did get a slight durability boost in the latest update from a 7-denier shell to 10-denier, we still don’t recommend this jacket as your daily driver. Finally, some might find themselves wishing for a helmet-compatible hood or a tighter seal at the wrists, but these are the sacrifices many are willing to make in the name of saving weight.  The first con of the Ghost Whisperer 2 is it has lesser quality down being the 800 fill as opposed to the thousand fill. The cool thing about it though is it is Q shield and it is going to be warmer overall. So while you have a little bit cost in the weight, I think the pros really outweigh the cons for that. Another con about really both these jackets is they are a little bit more boxier than the original and they do happen to have a little bit of tightness underneath the arms when you're moving, especially if you go to reach a hold or something like that if you're climbing

8 or 220.5 grams is which is the claim on the Mountain Hardware website, and I'm guessing that must be for an extra small because on my small version, I measured right around 8.2 ounces or so for a men's small. so it's a tad heavier than the previous year's Ghost Whisperer because it does use a little bit thicker denier in areas, but it also has a little bit more down packed into it so it's going to be a little bit heavier than the previous year version

 Now they do this by going with seven denier by five deniers, so even thinner than the previous year version. This is also a rip stop whisper nylon as well that they use for the shell and it's also featured with a Dwr finish. Let's talk about the insulation. Now another way in which these two jackets differ

 Plus, you have a little bit more down. even though it's a little lesser quality down, it's going to be a warmer jacket and the weight cost is very minimal compared to the durability and the warmth that you're getting with it. Another pro is that it's going to be cheaper than the Ul version about 50 cheaper to be exact and the amount of weight savings that you're getting, but the durability and everything that you get with the 2 version, I don't think it makes much sense to get pay more for getting something far less durable with very minimal weight savings at the difference with that. Another pro is that the Ghost Whisperer 2 is cheaper than the Ul version 50 cheaper to be exact and the amount of difference that you're getting with the durability benefits and warmer jacket with that doesn't really compute with the 50 margin difference with that being far less durable and no hydrophobic down with it

 I'm bummed because my dad's jacket held up incredible to the same activity and never displayed these signs of wear. It also came packed with less down than my dad's jacket. I was a little disappointed in the quality of material used to make this jacket. My dad has the ghost whisperer 800 fill from 2015 and I've used it quite a bit because it was very comfortable, warm, packable, and it looked great. I decided to buy one of my own, but they've changed lots over 5 years. It is described as a rock climbing, mountaneering, backpacking, and hiking down jacket, but on both my backpacking trip and rock climbing experience, the jacket had visual abrasions from very minimal friction

Hey guys today, we have another jacket battle, this time between the mountain hardware, ghost whisper ul versus the mountain hardware, ghost whisperer 2.. That'S next welcome back country renegade, i'm jeff! This channel is all about hiking backpacking and over landing and all the gear in between. If you're into those things too consider subscribing today we're looking at two very popular jackets that are reiterations of the very popular mountain hardware, ghost whisper, we are looking at the mountain hardware, ghost whisperer ul versus the mountain hardware, ghost whisperer 2

 This gives you an extra protection. If you do happen to get into a brief rain shower or anything like that, you can rest assured that the down's going to maintain its loft and you can stay warm in the process where the ul version, while it's super lightweight it does not have the q Shield and that hydrophobic down, so it will lose its loft if it does get wet. Another pro is that this jacket is going to be warmer than the ul version, because you have a little bit more denier on the outside of the shell being tin near versus the seven or five denier on the ul version. Plus you have a little bit more down, even though it's a little lesser quality down, it's going to be a warmer jacket and the weight cost is very minimal compared to the durability and the warmth that you're getting with it

 The ghost whisperer ul, on the other hand, is super light. It is only 6.17 ounces or 175 grams, so for the weight, it's incredibly light and you're getting a great amount of warmth as we'll talk about now in terms of warmth, the ghost whisperer 2, as i was moving, started to feel cold for me at around 26 Degrees with just wearing a t-shirt underneath now compare that to, as i'm sitting still, i started to feel cold in the ghost whisperer 2 at around 31 degrees, so something to keep in mind the ghost whisper ultra light. On the other hand, i started to feel cold while moving close to 30 degrees, so it is a thinner denier jacket and, as a result, it seemed like wind penetrated a little bit better through that and the ghost whisperer 2 kind of shielded it

 The armpits are tight and dig into my lats whenever I reach for something. It’s drives me nuts whenever I tie my shoes. I used the previous model so much, the zipper fell off. I find myself reaching less and less for the Ghost Whisperer 2, and may look into other jackets due to the mobility restrictions caused by its odd fit

 Super light, ultra light. Really that matter. Let'S talk about, it is an ultra light jacket. So there are some trade-offs to be expected

 I'Ve had those for let's go in the second season and they come with me everywhere. I'M going to be using them once the sun goes down in about 14 15 minutes, maybe 15 16 minutes and uh down pants or where it's at. So if you, if you can budget for or ask for, i would get the ghost whisperer 2 and get the ghostbuster pants and you have a really great ultra light kit for under 20 ounces.  In my kit, so i just kind of rolled up into the hood i'll show you a picture of that and call it good compresses down very nicely, because it is super high quality, 800 fill down and um yeah msrp is 3 325 i'll link below where to Purchase again, the upgrades over previous whisper ghost whisperer is that new hyper dry, waterproof down, which i would highly recommend i also highly recommend getting the ghost whisperer down pants. Now, that's like my secret hack on how i stay comfortable when you're camping like tonight is the winter solstice yay winter, shortest day of the year, uh i'm wearing camping. My dogs are right here, and this is how i push my ability to handle colder. Temperatures is wearing a down jacket

 So the ghost whisperer ghostwise for two for that matter, uh features their proprietary mountain hardware, proprietary 10 denier, ultra light ripstop nylon. It is uh soft against the skin. It plays nicely with earlier so it slides under other jackets, really well or over another jacket or sweater. Very well, it's a it's, not crinkly! You don't hear anything right, um, very functional, windproof down proof and it's only 10 denier

The structure and function of the jacket was on point!  I was surprised at how lightweight it was when I pulled it out of the package, as well as how well it fit me (5'10", 170 lbs, slim athletic).  Additionally, it was cozy and warm!

 Another great thing is: it does have these side waistbands on each side to tighten it, so you don't get drafts underneath if you're just sitting around and you're not moving a lot the construction overall. I thought you do have to be careful with this, but i will say that it is held up well um. I'Ve got a cut on or caught on branches and such has not torn it um for as light as the material is. That being said, you do want to be careful with this, because it is expensive

 It is eight ounces, that's primarily what you're paying for. I just put mine on the scale: i have an extra large um men's and it is eight ounces and um. You know you're paying a premium for getting those few five, six, seven ounces off of the weight and you're paying that premium and money, but the construction material is fantastic, and for this this jacket is warmer than other jackets. I have that are much heavier so for the weight

 It was maybe eight degrees, so a big change here, but that is exactly why that i have this puffy jacket. You never know what you're gon na hit on the trail. I started looking at puffy jackets. A few years ago before i usually just brought long johns and i layered up really well and um, but i was looking for something that was lightweight that i could take with me on the trail and did a bunch of research

 I know that i have this in my bag that i can wear so that if i've gone out and uh say i selected my quilt for temperature - that was appropriate, but it dropped a little bit down. This does gives me security to know that if i combine my quilt with this, that i'm not gon na freeze all night - because i do have this with me and for eight ounces - it's usually worth it to keep. Even if you think it's going to be cold, some other cool features of this that i really enjoy i'll, take it off. It does fold into yourself or itself, which is actually super handy to carry around

MH fan for years but concur with the reviews below on the GW/2; the cut in the armpit is too high thus extremely tight (not just snug), feels restrictive; enough so that not sure this will work for active activities (climbing, backpacking); returning for an alternative (arms already seemed long and belly area baggy so couldn’t go up a size). Yes, partly to blame as I ordered directly online without trying it on but none of the local hiking stores carried the jacket.  Recommend trying it on prior to purchasing, as it likely would be a great jacket for many (maybe I received a bad production run/cut).

This jacket is noticeably warm for its size. It's light. It's packable. However, it is inexcusable that it does not have a hood cinch cord or elastic band to keep the hood tight
