 Hey guys, Trump again with your magazine and today we're in beautiful Ashbridges Bay in Toronto, Ontario. We're here to test out this mountain hardware stretch down hooded jacket. I've been on the lookout for a puffy down jacket that is light but warm enough to handle a good Toronto winter and I think I found it with the new stretch down hooded jacket for mountain hardware. It weighs in at just over a pound

 It's more something you put on after climbing or day surfing the Great Lakes in January, but there is very little I don't like about it. This stretch down, which is made from sustainably sourced, already a certified down, is one of the best puppies I've tried. It's lightweight, it's durable, and it's warm. It's perfect for cold days in the city or up in the mountains on a hike

Great jacket

 I don't know what the issue is there. It's not a helmet compatible hood, so they're not trying to gain any extra space inside of the jacket to fit an Alpine helmet or anything like that. It's not that big of a hood, but for some reason, the face doesn't cinch down. On the bright side, you get that more technical fit

 One thing I do want to talk about though is the hood. On the Stretch Down RS, Mountain Hardware used a scuba style hood that didn't have any draw cords. They used elastic around the edge of the face to seal everything in here. The Stretch Down DS, I want to show you how the hood doesn't exactly cinch down, how the collar is not really up to snuff when it comes to keeping your face warm, keeping your chin warm

 Let's talk about a couple of the features real quick. Two pockets for keeping your hands warm. Zippers move smoothly. Also a Napoleon pocket up here for keeping essentials warm

 It's not that big of a hood, but for some reason, the face doesn't cinch down. On the bright side, you get that more technical fit. You can see the differential baffling all over the jacket. 800-Fill Nickwax waterproof down replaces the 750-Fill Q-Shield that Mountain Outwear used in the RS and the regular Stretch Down

 Sean Sewell in Gearmint.com here and this is the brand new Mountain Hardwear Super DS Stretch Down Jacket, this guy right here. Now we've done reviews on most of the previous versions of all their Down Stretch Jackets from Mountain Hardwear. This one's brand new for 2020, it is the end of February 2020 as I do this video review and we saw this at Outdoor Retailer, got our hands on it, we're really intrigued with it for a lot of reasons so let's get into it

 So that stretch is very nice and again this is extra large on me, 6 foot 1, 36, 37 on the arms, 45 inch chest, 33 inch waist and it fits fantastic. MSRP is $275 for this jacket and also it's made from eco-friendly materials, I should have mentioned that.  So it does have good coverage, load that so the microphone doesn't get blocked, but there's no way to adjust it. So it's a good coverage, it's a good fit especially over a hat you can see there, got elastic which is very helpful but there's no toggles here, there's no toggle in the back. So that could be a deal breaker for you if you need to really cinch down the hood in inclement weather. Now as you can see it fit very well over my size medium head with this hat on

Now when it gets down into the single digits and even teens I do put on a mid-layer, you know like a 200 weight merino or something underneath this and it still fits totally fine.  I was able to adjust the hood to seal in the warmth on a few chilly nights recently and was grateful for this addition.

I've worn a Patagonia down sweater for the last 10 years or so and really liked it. Light weight, warm, versatile. But it had no hood and the fit is boxy.

I received what I think is the newest version which addresses a lot of the shortcomings from previous versions. All the benefits are the same, great material, great fit, great warmth etc. But now there is a two-way zipper so you can unzip from the bottom and vent the heat which adds some versatility. It also has drawstrings in the hood which was missing and a common complaint with earlier versions

 The material and stretch fit are also great. It hardly feels like I'm wearing a jacket and just moves with me so well. I haven't done any climbing yet but took it with me on a 3-day backpacking trip and kind of fell in love with it.

 There's not any Velcro to give you any kind of adjustability. Then the hood, it does fit really well over a helmet. It's nice and large. And actually, once you have a helmet on, it fits nice and snug against the helmet, but it still allows plenty of freedom of movement for looking around and twisting your head left and right

 This jacket is what's going to be keeping me warm. Again, it's made by Mountain Hardwear. It's the Stretch Down Hybrid Hoodie. If you guys have any questions on it, please leave them in the comments section below and we'll get back to you

 There's not any stitching that's holding it back. It's also 700 fill of down in all of this area, as well as in my arms and in my back. However, you can see this panel down here that wraps from the back to the front, as well as the panel that's going underneath my arm here. That's a synthetic insulation throughout those parts of the jacket

 If you're looking to add this flavor to your climbing wardrobe, there are a couple things I feel like are worth mentioning. One, the zipper is not a two-way zipper. I feel like I always want a two-way zipper for belaying. If I can just unzip the bottom to get to my belay loop, it makes life a lot easier

 With all of that aside, the Stretch Down Hybrid Hoodie is still an awesome jacket. It's going to be with us on all of our climbing adventures, especially this winter ice climbing. This jacket is what's going to be keeping me warm. Again, it's made by Mountain Hardwear

The Stretchdown Hybrid Hoody by Mountain Hardwear is the perfect combination of insulation, non-restricting comfort, and packability and has been accompanying me on many adventures this fall. The Stretchdown Hybrid Hoody is a simple jacket but ready for the most complex adventures.

Speaking to the name of this jacket, the Stretchdown is made with movement in mind. The down baffles are stitch-free which means nothing is holding you back. The down insulation is still evenly distributed providing you with ultimate warmth. I like the combination of 700-fill down throughout the core and 60 g of synthetic insulation in the underarms and around the bottom hem. It’s nice to have the best of both down worlds (synthetic and down).

The fit of the Stretchdown Hybrid Hoody is spot on, though I will say if you aren’t looking to layer up you could potentially get away with a size smaller than your normal size. I’m 6’0 tall and 190 pounds and usually wear a size large in outer layers. I definitely have room to layer under my Stretchdown Hoody and I’m good with that.

While I’m overall happy with the simplistic design of the Stretchdown Hoody, I think there are a few things worth mentioning. First of all, it doesn’t have a two-way zip. I personally don’t like to wear my climbing harness over my insulating layers so I don’t love that there is no two-way zip. Secondly, there is no adjustability to the cuffs and I find that the sleeves can kind of get in the way with my hands. I do wish there was a bit of velcro adjustability so I could cinch them out of the way. There’s also no adjustability on the hood. It fits really well over a climbing harness but if I’m just wearing the hoody on a hike with a hat on, the hood seems a bit oversized and tends to fall in my eyes.

If you’re looking for a layer that you can toss in a pack for any adventure, check out the Stretchdown Hybrid Hoody.
