Considering you're describing a fairly light bag either should be fine. A sling pack that hugs your back well can be a little better balanced and easier on your body and nice for faster paces or going on a trail. It hugs your body and doesn't move around as much. I find a little cross body/mini messenger type a bit easier to get in and out of

I will be taking at least two trips this year, and plan to be on the go! My wife and I love to travel, so I am in search for a bag/pouch/fanny pack that I can carry my day to day essentials in (cash, phone, external charger, ID's, etc.)

I would like it to be easily accessible for me, and not easy to pick pocket, which is why my first thought was fanny pack. I would like it to be made of sturdy material, and something that will last a long time.

As far as asthetics, I feel I would prefer a brown/dark brown genuine leather product, but can forego leather and do something colorful if it is weather/water proof. I have only recently become a father, so asthetics matter little if there is functionality. #dadlife 

My budget for this is around $30-$60 USD, but would pay more if it is a proven quality product that will last.

 The two things I'd change are design flaws: 1) On the pocket in the largest compartment, the fabric and elastic started to separate and fray. Its not durable enough for repeat putting in and taking out of things. The other thing is the strap used to adjust the fit of the backpack when wearing it. There's no clasp or stop mechanism once you position it, so its completely come out of the strap holder at times, resulting in my somewhat flinging/dropping the backpack when I take it off
