When the U67 came out (essentially a U87 but with a tube) it was even better. The condenser mic had been revived and perfected. Moving from broadcasting to recording I continued to love the Neumanns.

As for their mics, I'm still not a fan, but their U67 clone is actually really really nice and punches WAY above it's weight. \-- TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS --. I'm sure their NEVE 1073 clone is good as I see a lot of people I respect use them. I was actually going to get one, but saw the Heritage 1073 was only $100 more and so I went with that.

Granted, the build quality is unspeakably inferior to the better European / American / Japanese microphones but it sounds fantastic. I really mean comparable to the Holy Grail mics like Telefunken ELA-M251, AKG C12, Neumann U67, etc. Caveat- the build quality issues forced me to do extensive work (power-supply rebuild, internal rewiring, re-soldering, replacing fastners, even re-threading a few screw holes). But the end result was my go to mic for front-micing acoustic instruments, vocal detail and warmth, even high-set drum overheads (yes, I had a pair of the mics).

The u67 gives a fuller bass and clear top where the 57 gives that distinctive midrange. Push up both faders the same or reshape it be favoring one over the other. Are those options? Yes, but I think it's an option like a lens with a zoom.

Cascade Fathead is another affordable ribbon mic. Something I've been using lately is a single tube mic (mine is an Oktava MKL2500, but I've had luck with the Neumann u67 and I'm sure there's other ones for all budgets). At the end of the day, placement is the most important thing to me, and guitar is really easy to get a nice recorded tone with.

The microphone, which sounded fine when it was next to their ear and close to their mouth, will sound weird and distant and kind of watery. I'm sure you've heard that "speakerphone" sound: that's the acoustics of small rooms, and it sounds terrible!. If I were in your place, I would go for a high-quality, very directional dynamic mic. The 57-58 will do better in that regard (also because you can get closer without popping) but there are far better mics to pick from.
