The 896 V3 fits true to size and offers a medium width. First up on today's review we've got Jason, now Jay you have a wider foot, first did you stay with the D width or go wider and then how did the shoe work out for you? Yeah, we got shipped the D width and it was a little too narrow for me but luckily it is New Balance so I was able to move up to the 2E and then once I moved into the 2E it was a great fit for my foot and the first thing I noticed when I put the shoes on were just how lightweight these shoes are, they're really really lightweight

 I would have liked a little bit more of the midsole cushioning or padding but I'm not going to knock it on this shoe too much because it's just super lightweight, not as comfortable as a fresh foam lav which I really love that New Balance shoe but that's to be expected in something this lightweight of a package, just really really fast around the court I felt like I could fly around, didn't really feel like I had anything on my feet but that's where kind of the downside came was I just felt like it wasn't as supportive as I like in the toe box like the upper material, it just started to flex and open up a little bit towards the end of the playtest and I didn't feel like it was just overall super supportive but for those looking for a really really lightweight fast package that like a minimal shoe I think this is a great option and better than the old New Balance Minimus from back in the day. Let's check in now with our second lefty on this review, Booney how did these shoes work out for you? I'm just going to start out and say this is one of my favorite shoe playtests so far and definitely one of my lightweight shoe favorites, I'll explain why, typically when I go to a shoe that weighs under 15 ounces you're going to sacrifice a little bit in the way of the upper holding your foot in place on lateral movements, this is a lightweight shoe and like Troy said it's not as supportive as say the lob shoe which I really like as well but you know being that it's 11.5 ounce shoe if I had worn it before I knew how much it weighed I would have had to put it on the scale just to verify it so that's how supportive the shoe was, I had a high degree of comfort out of it, I'll also add in there that it's not really a shallow shoe there was some depth to it so I felt like I had a little bit of vertical toe clearance so if somebody wanted to add a say an aftermarket insert or a custom orthotic you've probably got plenty of room to do so, I will kind of chime in exactly what Jay said earlier in regards to the tongue, comfort was great it's a little spartan, it laces up it cinches up nicely but as soon as you let it go it kind of spreads out again so you're having to kind of re-loop the laces to kind of keep the fit there when you pull the laces tight, traction you know it is a lightweight shoe so it's durability isn't going to be again what the lob or another sole warranty shoe is but I was really surprised at the performance and the minimal sacrifice I had to make for having such a lightweight shoe, really impressive. I also play tested the 896 V3 and I'm a big fan of really minimal feeling shoes so I was super excited to get this pair on my feet and I loved it from the get go, super lightweight shoe I could sprint around the court and cover the court really well and that's a big part of my game is just retrieving shots, staying in the point and this shoe definitely helped me do that and maximise my court speed, the uppers are very very soft they breathe well but I got enough support from them, I wore two pairs of socks, cinched laces nice and tightly and they held my feet very adequately to really make aggressive cuts without any fear of rolling over and I really just felt like I had a pair of outsole strapped to my feet, they flexed and moved with my feet and I think that helped me, gave me a sense of security out there, I didn't really feel like I had a midsole to roll off of because I just felt like I was pretty much stuck to the ground so really nice play test for me, I liked the tacking the net in the shoes, I felt very quick at net and able to cover the court side to side and then scamper back if I got lobbed so it was a great play test for me, probably not a durable offering for the grinder but for a match day shoe I think New Balance have really done a good job here

Once I got them on court they were pretty minimalistic, I felt loaded to the ground with them, felt really fast on my feet but I had a couple downsides, one was just the uppers were a little too soft and that combined with not having a true shank I felt like when I was cutting and moving side to side the shoe was just twisting too much and the other thing was the laces, these are kind of more of an old school lace, really easy to cinch up but also really easy to un-cinch so I was finding myself needing to cinch up my shoes a couple times during a playtest session but other than that I love the look of them, again they are very lightweight, I would use them for a workout or maybe even playing dingles in them but for a single session I think they're just a little too unstable. Next up today we're going to check in with Troy Lara, Troy how did these shoes work out for you? I was really impressed by how light these shoes are, I thought the comfort was pretty good considering them being a very very lightweight shoe, I liked the upper material, the mesh, the way it contoured to my foot as well as the lacing system and the tongue, typically with shoes this light the tongue is just too thin and it kind of digs into the top of your foot, I didn't have that here so I was really impressed with that

Mixed feelings

 I have to say that I found this shoe to be one that I could take from the box straight down to the court. The uppers are nice and soft, so I didn't have any hot spots or rubbing or anything and I didn't have any break-in period. The cushioning underneath was definitely minimal, like you guys said, but that allowed me to feel low to the ground and very connected to the court. I thought the traction was perfect for me

 And like you said, Michelle, it did open up a little bit, which was an issue for me at some point. At first, there was break-in and I really enjoyed playing in this shoe, but after four or six hours, the upper actually opened up a little bit and that's when I had support issues, unfortunately. But otherwise, it's a very lightweight shoe, very speedy, I felt very fast and connected to the court. And yeah, the middle was quite minimal, but it's a feature that I actually enjoyed

Perfect Fit, Great styling, Cushioning Below Average

Runs Narrow

Fit is perfect but the scrape guard on the inside big toe area is bothersome when shoe is articulated at that point.

 I can comfortably wear 9.5 mediums in several other court shoe brands. But New Balance seems to have gotten the design of this style confused with running shoes and/or skimped too much on the material. I only bought these because they were such a bargain, but the consistent pain (I wore these indoors over a period of several days for hours at a time) isn't worth it even if the shoes were free

These shoes are too narrow in the toebox, particularly where the foot is at its widest; i.e., the area of the ball of the foot. Strange that New Balance would design court shoes with a toebox (including the forward tip of the shoe) that's shaped more like a running shoe rather than one in which the wearer will need generous stability and comfort/roominess for a foot that will be performing lots of lateral movements on the court

 But New Balance seems to have gotten the design of this style confused with running shoes and/or skimped too much on the material. I only bought these because they were such a bargain, but the consistent pain (I wore these indoors over a period of several days for hours at a time) isn't worth it even if the shoes were free. I'll be returning them tomorrow and going back to Adidas or Nike.
