Nikon D5200

So far that's really the only thing that seems meaningfully better about mirrorless for what I shoot, but it's not so good that I'd take a step back in terms of ergonomics, AF performance, or FPS to get it. If I were a Canon or Sony shooter I might be looking into the R5 or A1, and on the Nikon side I'm waiting for the Z9 (though the improvements probably aren't enough to get me to fork out whatever they charge - I'll wait a few years for a used one or for features to trickle down).

I currently own a D5200 which is turning 9 this year. All in all this is a fantastic camera, and despite it's age, it still functions (mostly) like new. Lately I've been having some issues with SD card contacts occasionally giving me trouble, and this has gotten me thinking about upgrading. All of my Nikon gear is DX-mount oriented, which has me looking at the z50 and d7500.

They larger you print, the father away you usually have to step back to appreciate the image. Unless you want to extremely crop your images, a crop sensor might be sufficient, but for a much lower price tag. If it's for increased light sensitivity, up-to-date cameras usually offer enough dynamic range. After lots and lots of research, my wife and I both ended up buying Fujifilm X-T3s replacing our Nikon D90 and D5200 and we both are more than happy, even though I was heavily leaning towards a Nikon D800 first.

A friend of mine has had pictures taken on her used D5200 that have been put on billboards! The D3500 is amazingly capable, and probably better for learning IMO. The number of AF-points is a big difference. The 9 (or 11) on the D3500 will be quite limiting, but if you are trying to teach yourself / learn photography then that's I feel that's actually an advantage because it forces you to consider your pictures and actually take good pictures because you've actually got to compose your images, rather than just letting the amazing high end camera do all the work.

Many of my favorite photographers currently using the Z system have adapted their f-mount 200-500mm f/5.6, yielding remarkable results. I don’t know much about the D5200 body other than being an older model. If it’s working fine for you so far and doesn’t have any hiccups when you’ve used it, maybe you don’t have to get a new body just yet. But that 200-500mm is probably your best bet with getting a good amount of range when doing wildlife photography plus on a DX body it can increase the effective field of view to 300-750mm with that lens.
