The D5500 is probably the "best" but if you don't care about video for example and aren't wanting to place too many demands on the AF then you'll probably be happy with the D3400. The lack of a flippy screen on the D3x00 series might be a deal-breaker for you however. Lots of people find them extremely useful when shooting.

I started with a D3300, and then moved to the D5500. The D5500 is definitely a step up, but not in its low light capabilities (same sensor). I now have a D500, and that world's better in low light and auto focus abilities (not sure what you mean by "but live view would be awesome" - they all have live view?).
