 Now, the question I'd really like to answer in this video is whether this camera is actually worth buying in 2022, because it is just about 2022 here. By the time you're watching this video, it probably will be 2022. And is this a camera you should think about investing in? Now, used, it only cost me $700 before tax. That's pretty cheap for a full frame camera with this kind of 36 megapixels, that kind of quality, that is a kind of a bargain, I think

 You can get that plus this 300PF lens, I have used, if you buy both used, you can probably come in around $2,000, maybe a little bit more, maybe depending on how price is fluctuated. And that's a pretty good bargain for this great of a wildlife photography setup. You can throw a 1.4 teleconverter on here and then it's really great for wildlife

 This camera is really nice in my hand, I've got large hands, and it feels really solid there. The grip feels really nice. I will say, though, that it is quite a lot heavier than my Z6. I hadn't realized how heavy a professional full-frame mirror DSLR actually was until I used this, because I really only had experience with APS-C smaller DSLRs before I picked up the Z6

Buying a ten year old used DSLR at a time when DSLRs are quickly being replaced by mirrorless cameras, but despite it's age, the Nikon D800 is still a fantastic camera for creating incredible images. It's capable of capturing 36 MP images that exceed the quality of shots captured with many modern full frame mirrorless cameras, and it costs less than many current entry level camera systems. Despite the fact that I shoot with the Nikon Z6 and am going to purchasing the Nikon Z9, the Nikon D800 still has a place in my kit.

Nikon D800 Real World Review - Worth buying in 2022?

If it is landscape you want for a budget it is Nikon, nothing else. A Nikon D800 is the best bargain you can get right now. and Nikons are made for landscapes, many landscape shooters use Nikons

So I'm currently in the market for a new camera and am wondering which system to buy into, as I need body and lens I don't want to make a hasty decision.

I currently shoot mostly landscapes and have already asked in a different forum what cameras would be best suited for my usage.

The most mentioned brands are listed below, with the respective models being

Alpha 7II

EOS 6d

D800/D750

As mentioned above my current dilemma is, I don't know which system to buy into especially going forward, my budget for now is about 1500 for a body+standard zoom lens(24-70 mm like).

As the future seems to lie in dslm as opposed to the dslrs mentioned above, apart the Sony one, is there an obvious disadvantage in using an adapter, which I would have to with Canon or Nikon, because I would like to carry the lenses forward.

How is the dslm segment of Canon and Nikon looking at the moment, is it on par with the seemingly godly Sony ones ?

Which System to buy into ?

 This is the reason why I stopped searching for a "good copy" of the optically superior Sigma 35mm 1.4 and settled for the more reliable Canon.

Nikon does many things better than Canon. In body AF Assist Light, intervalometer, spot metering based on AF point, intelligent Auto ISO, better AF position selector, better access to flash options, and many more. Overall, less menu digging, and obviously Nikon's megapixel advantage is nice for cropping.

The best landscape or studio DSLR available today

 The D800, as far as still images, one of the best in the biz. But perhaps one of the most highly anticipated features on the D800 was its 1080p HD video. I shot exclusively in 24 frames per second and 30 frames per second, and I was extremely impressed by what I found. But overall, the D800's HD video quality could be considered for film and commercial work, thanks to its superb image quality

 Now, for terminals, the D800 has mic and headphone jacks, and that's going to come in handy for video mode. Also, we have a USB 3.0, so we have the high speed, and we have an HDMI mini out. The mini out is going to come in handy for streaming to an external monitor while you're recording video

 In all my years of testing, I've never had any problems with a Sandisk. I always rely on Sandisk. Now I tested the D800 in a variety of locations, and I was amazed by the detail and clarity with the triple pixel count. Colors and dynamic range were fantastic, but the ISO performance was the best

 I could shoot at ISO 6400 with great results. Even the higher ISO values, like 12800, were impressive. And thanks to the high-resolution sensor, I was able to shoot at higher ISOs and scale the images down for reduced noise effects. Now when you stack RAW versus JPEG, the RAW files definitely are higher quality

A radical departure from the still photo-exclusive D700, Nikon threw down the gauntlet on Canon's home turf. The D800 is capable of 1080p HD videos captured at 30 or 24fps, and its sensor is a complete overhaul, spewing out 36 effective megapixels.  Just all the little things that would be better about the new generation compared to the old, so I pre-ordered both a pair of D4s and D800s, the D800s from Amazon on Feb 7. While waiting for them, I canceled the D4 ..

I think I will eventually be happy I bought a pair of D800s

 But this camera is much more at home for portraiture studio and landscape work where you've got a little more time to get it right rather than the spray and pray high-speed auto fire approach. Video coming straight out of the camera in its default setup is frankly a little bit on the soft side and quite flat looking but that's pretty much what you want. This isn't for home movies in the light. This is for people who shoot and then color grade properly in post

Thanks to the resolution down sampling of that 36 megapixel chip to churn out 1080p video you do occasionally have some issues with jaggies and the familiar artifacts but they're actually quite well controlled overall

 I was clumping about happily snapping off clean looking frames without the encumbrance of carrying or setting up a tripod. Even in what to my own human eyes was a dank dark dreary train tunnel the D800 extracted super crisp detail and a wonderful palette of color. Shooting at the very high end of the ISO range will of course bring some noise with it but at 36 megapixels unless you're printing on massive signages or billboards it's really going to be a real-world issue in most places. Another thing that high megapixel count comes in handy for is the built-in ability to switch to a cropped mode from full-frame FX down to Nikon's APS-C sized sensor crop DX and even a square format too

 What matters is the end result so let's take a look at some real-world performance. First up that crazy-ass resolution isn't just a pretty number to put on the box it really does properly resolve a serious amount of fine detail. So much so that your lens selection becomes even more important than it ever was. You really want to invest in top-of-the-line lenses to actually make use of the detail resolving power here

SOLID performance and resolution in files that can be demanding of your lenses. If you are using older lenses I would say go D800 personally.

Thoughts on the D800E

Curiosity got the best of me and I bought a Canon MkIII and a few assorted lenses, fully expecting to return or resell the camera unless the quality was immediately apparent. I found myself shooting the MkIII alongside the D700 and D800. In many situations where a tripod wasn't possible or practical, most of the D800 images simply got deleted upon review in Lightroom due to blurring. In the situations where the D800 and MkIII were both used on a tripod, the D800 images were better than the D700, but simply on par with the MkIII unless one really started pixel-peeping (then the D800 looked far cleaner), but again I could care less about pixel peeping since clients too could care less

This camera would probably be wonderful in a studio environment on a tripod or doing landscapes. Also, I thought the video quality was very good, arguably better than the Canons' straight-out of the camera even considering some of the limitations pointed out in reviews aimed to more professional videographers. (See Phillip Bloom's excellent review of the MkIII and D800 video comparision.) However, for everything else, I didn't see the point in using the D800

It's now been about a month using nothing but Canon and I am seriously thinking of just selling my Nikon gear altogether. For *my personal style*, I find that I get many more "keeper" images with the MkIII than I ever did with my Nikons (D40s, D300s, D700s, D7000s, D800s) -- i.e. I am routinely amazed by getting very sharp images at 1/50th of a second handheld -- something I couldn't do with any of my $2000+ Nikon VR lenses

 Then, I noticed noise before zooming in at all, much less pixel-peeping. Having owned a D700 for years, I found myself reverting back to the D700 as an all-around camera and only shooting the D800 when a tripod was possible. However when a tripod was used, the image quality improvement over the D700 was apparent to virtually any non-technical user (read: clients, family) -- and isn't that ultimately all that matters? That clearly better image quality over the D700 when a tripod was possible got me lusting for something more all-around that had higher IQ than the D700.

I plan to upgrade to a fullframe body, however out of a few that i have narrowed down, i can not decide which would be the better investment. Hopefully i can get the last bit of inspiration from you guys.

Something around early but enthusiastic hobbyist. I started more "serious" photography last summer as a corona hobby.

My current gear:

600D which has been astromodified, various prime lenses (16mm f2 samyang, 50mm f1.4 and f1.8 canon, 105mm sigma f2.8 macro and some telescopes). I can borrow my brothers 5D mk II at any time i want to.

My photography interest / type of photography:

Astrophotography (for that i had the 600D astromodified (1 of the two IR filters removed, thus more sensitive to the IR spectrum), which will stay my main camera for AP), Street, city wildlife (birds, bees, foxes, squirrels), portrait, macro (plants and insects mostly) and since very recent nighttime street photography (which at the moment is what i enjoy most). All of these just as an interested hobbyist, nothing professional. Usually if i go out for a photosession it will be on foot or on motorbike and takes anything between an hour and a full day. As for APSC vs FF, i dont know why but i kind of like the results of the 5D2's FF sensor more than my own 600D APSC ones.

What i want to upgrade:

Better low light performance than with my 600D or my brothers 5D2, ideally lighter than my brothers 5D2, good battery life is a huge plus but if its around the 600D its okay to switch a battery or two during a session.

Articulated screen - i think its nice to have but so far aside from AP it was never necessary or i did care too little. Connectivity extras (like bluetooth, wlan or so) - for me also just nice to have. Anything video related - im not into video making at all, not even the slightest. Im just and only interested in photography and photo editing. Any differences on video performance between the cameras im considering is of no interest to me at all.

In body image stabilisation - i guess with longer exposures (as for nighttime photography) stabilization is very handy. My Sigma lens has it and i love it, the other lenses don't

Focus? I hear that some find it immensely valuable to have a good focussing system but with my experience being just 600D and 5D2 the focus systems are what many online consider "paleozoic". With that said, f-ed up focus is so far my main reason for dumped images... So maybe a better focussing system would be beneficial...

Budget:

Below 500€ would be nice, i can stretch it to 1k if i wait a few more months but thats pretty much about it.

Now for the big main part of interest. The bodies i already am considering and between which i cant decide:

6D MK I - can get it used starting around 400€. I could almost immediately afford that and my wife wouldnt even complain.

6D MK II - can get it used starting around 800€. Would need a bit of convincing plus i'd need to save another month or two. Are the few extra pixels, newer DIGIC processor and the articulated screen really worth the 400€ jump over the 6D1? Im not fully convinced, yet most websites would suggest so.

5D MK III - can get it used starting around 700€. Also convincing and saving needed. Has the faster shutter speed (neat for whe i photograph birds zooming by) but is heavy as a block of iron compared to the other choices.

RP - can get it used starting around 700€. Financially same as 6D2, plus i'd need an adapter for my EF lenses on top of that. I am a bit torn on that. On one hand what makes me drool is the weight, seemingly godlike focussing (at least compared to my other choices and to what i have used so far myself) and that its mirrorless (less mechanical parts to fail). What turns me off however is that so far i only know the optical viewfinder and i love it plus the battery life is very very low compared to what i have and what i am considering else. Is Mirrorless really THAT much better? Am i unfair to the Electronic Viewfinder?

R6 - can dream about it starting at 1800€. Well of course, specifications only minus my current scepticism about mirrorless systems, this is pretty much my dreamdevice. As in "i'd dream about having that much money loose". However i could start saving up for a jump to the R6 in a few years and get away with a 6D1 in the meantime.
