It's easy to layer over warm jackets but still slim fitting enough that the material doesn't get in the way of your movements. This makes it highly versatile when it comes to activity type and activity level. You can add layers to keep you warm and dry while ice climbing, but it was still a good fit for hiking, snowshoeing, and ski touring when you're generating more heat.
The Trollveggen is well suited to mountain adventures and will also perform well during urban activities or hiking and backpacking. It has a slightly looser fit and is impressively versatile, not to mention it's a surprisingly light jacket for the range of activities it can handle. We could stretch this jacket into extended alpine adventures and still appreciate it in milder climates on shorter missions. It's an excellent investment for all-around alpine climbing.

Norrøna may not be on everyone’s radar, but the Norway-based outdoor company has a serious lineup of quality hardshells. From their flagship Trollveggen series is the Gore-Tex Pro Light, which goes head-to-head with top-end designs like the Arc’teryx Beta AR above. This Gore-Tex Pro shell is meant for high-alpine adventure with a long cut, 40-denier face fabric with burly 70-denier reinforcements, helmet-compatible hood, and tall collar. But Norrøna kept weight intentionally low with the “Light,” which gives it versatility for weight-conscious activities like hiking and backpacking. And with large pit zips and a two-way main zipper, you can customize airflow for all manner of activities and conditions.

Where does the Trollveggen Light come up short? In our opinion, Norrøna took the alpine-focused build one step too far when they designed the jacket without hand pockets—instead, you get just two external chest pockets and one internal zippered stash. What’s more, the jacket features a very long cut, which is great for coverage but slightly polarizing for casual use. In contrast, the Beta AR has a more standard length and convenient hand pockets, which are situated high enough to access under a hipbelt or harness. Both are exceptionally built and highly protective shells, but the Beta AR’s more versatile design might be the deciding factor for many. I have had this for only four winter months in the arctic -- would like to also test in other seasons but yeah -- and it has been great so far. It replaces a newer Falketind Gore-Tex jacket that I was never happy with (which had replaced a wonderful, 10 yr old Falketind Gore-Tex Pro jacket..

Three main takeaways: the jacket is very robust and easy to pack (hope it lasts 10 years); negatives so far are mainly the single hood cinch and maybe needing to use the pit-zips if you want to put your hands in your mid-layer's pockets cause there are no pockets for hands (yeah, this is fine); and lastly -- which I struggled with buying-and-returning 3 of these jackets -- I own over 40 pieces of Norrøna clothing, all in Mens S or Wms M, and for this jacket I needed a Mens M which is maybe a little too roomy, but the other sizes (incld

Exceptional quality and ruggedness

Super light but durable jacket. At first, when opening the package, I was curious to see if the durability would be as advertised given the lightness of the jacket. I have worn the jacket now for a couple of weeks in different weather types and it fit's like a glove and delivers as advertised. For my personal preference the length of the arms might have been 1-2cm longer so my trollvegen primaloft 100 zip hood (arm length)(both size XL) is completely covered without having to tuck it under and using the velcro

Is it as good as my previous jacket

I recently spent 8 days in April skiing across Svalbard. This jacket was my daily wear as I used it while skiing as it maintained a consistent temperature as I warmed up, as a shell over a jacket whenever I stopped and had it ready at night to cover my heavier jacket when I had polar bear duty. The pockets were big enough to store my skins and snacks while on the glacier. I have also used it for backcountry skiing and hiking in the rain as it is long enough in the back to adequately cover the top of my pants
