 I don't have a strong preference for 1095 over 1075 (as long as the heat treat is good) and may sometimes prefer 1075 over 1095 for rough use knives and big choppers. It seems that Ontario, rather underhandedly, switched to using 1075 steel for all of their carbon knives except for the ones under mil spec contracts but didn't tell anyone about the switch for some time which leaves a bad taste in my mouth but I needed a cheap, sturdy, compact knife that I can wear IWB for those times I may need a sturdy fixed blade but don't want to alarm some of my more sensitive clients. This knife fit the bill perfectly after buying an ESEE 3 sheath to replace the crappy nylon sheath that came with the knife. Quality is not on par with my ESEE knives but is good enough for the price IMO

New Production Rats are 1075 NOT 1095

 You have to bend the sheath to get the knife in the sheath. Then the handle rests against the bottom snap and deforms the entire thing. I have no idea how this sheath got past quality control. The only solutions I see are buy another sheath (there goes the value), cut the bottom snap assembly off or return the knife

 That can be fixed with the expense of my labor. The real problem is the sheath. I have no idea why Ontario would offer this knife with a cheap sheath that you would expect to get if you purchased a cheap $10 knock off. The knife does not even fit right in the sheath because the bottom snap is too close to the sheath opening so the knife handle is blocked

  I'm very surprised given the glowing reviews. It feels great and I love the blade shape. But honestly it's not as sharp as a $17 Schrade I also bought from Amazon. That irks me a bit

 A made in USA knife from a respected manufacturer should perform better out of the gate.

 I also tried to cut some paper but no joy. There's no two ways about it. This thing is dull right out of the box - really dull. Now I need to figure out whether I want to return it or try to sharpen it

 I went ahead and taped the handle to protect the micarta. The nylon sheath that comes with it is absolutely horrible. I have no idea why there are two straps to lock it down, but I ended up cutting off the lower one just to have quick access getting it out.

Saw that there was a sale on this item and decided to purchase the Rat-3. Overall its a fairly decent knife if you are purchasing it for $40-$50 because that is what its worth. The blade is the best part. Mine came sharp out of the box

 My suggestion is best to buy a different brand knife, this is my second knife from Ontario and I have had to correct the edge on both. Sadly they do not have the QC to warrant this price.

I expected more for the price to be honest. Cheap knives from china come ready to go out of the box but this one did not. Material of the blade is fine, sheath is cheap, and handle is smooth so slippery if wet etc.

Edge- this was the main reason I rated this product so low, QC is completely lacking and this would of been a reject from any other company. My knife had a terrible grind, only one side was grinded to an edge forcing me to correct it. My suggestion is best to buy a different brand knife, this is my second knife from Ontario and I have had to correct the edge on both. Sadly they do not have the QC to warrant this price

First knife arrived about as sharp as a river rock or as dull as the humor of Jimmy Fallen. That is to say… it was less than impressive or acceptable. When I exchanged it another equally disappointing knife arrived though for some reason the blade was a different shape. I’d have returned it but was out of town for several weeks and didn’t have the chance
