Onyx Boox Nova Air - Can a 7.8" E-ink Tablet do it all?  My first thoughts.

I have Kindles and I recently purchased the Onyx Boox Nova Air.

So, I like my Kindles.  I have an Oasis and a Voyage.  I prefer the Voyage form factor, but I like the screen size and the water resistance on the Oasis.  I do not like the paperwhite because I don't like not having buttons.  Though we have one in our household (last gen.)  The Oasis gets the most usage.

So, why did I get a Nova Air? The Kindle is locked down. Given that Amazon accounts for \~80% of the ebook market and rarely do other sellers have a deal that Amazon doesn't, I don't really mind purchasing through Amazon per se.  

Likewise, in the US, most library books in the Overdrive/Libby catalogue can be sent to a Kindle, and I mostly use a Kindle to read these.

So why did i buy the Nova Air?  Because it can do more.  

\- There are some books from Overdrive you cannot send to a Kindle - you can request that format be made available, but that doesn't always work.

\- PDFs are too small even on the larger Oasis Screen. 

\- You can read books from Hoopla - another library app - on the Boox but not on a Kindle OR a Kobo. (as far as I know.  Kobo can be modified more than a Kindle but I don't think it can run any version of Hoopla)

I have read books both on Libby and Hoopla on the Boox and it works pretty well in both cases.

\- You can read books borrowed from Open Library, though I haven't yet tried this myself.  

You can also easily read longer web articles on a browser, etc.

The Nova Air screen looks better than even a Voyage (and that is a high complement) to me.  But I overall prefer reading a Kindle book on the Kindle Oasis / Voyage over reading a Kindle book on the Kindle app on the Boox.  It is good enough, but it isn't quite as smooth as the dedicated device.  But you CAN read Kindle or Kobo on the Boox if you don't mind having different books in different apps.  I like that I have the option to buy from different markets.  Kindle books work really well, but I don't love that Amazon effectively has a monopoly.

PDFs are better on the Nova Air, but if I used them more I would go for a larger device, it is still small but at least not always tiny.

Note - even if your local library doesn't use Overdrive, sometimes you can get cards from nearby communities or even larger cities in your state.  There are also some places you can pay $40-$50 for an out of state digital library card.  This is cheaper than Unlimited and the book selection - if you choose a good, well-funding library - will have more titles from major publishers.

I read hundreds of books a year for work and relaxation. I have had Kindles, Kobos, a Nook and an Onyx Boox. I have 9 readers in my desk drawer (my former company supplied something to the industry) and a few that are broken or discarded in past.

I personally love Kobo for their beautiful typography and design, but my main reader is a Kindle Voyager.

Kobo is truly beautiful. They have grace and style, and you can hack them and extend the reader with cool tools. Kindle is tightly closed. Kobo has Pocket integration, which allows you to read web articles on the reader with gorgeous typography. Kindle does not.

But Kindle has the best highlighting. Highlight a passage and it's synced to your account. You can download those with 3rd party software (KLib) and organize any way you like. Kobo, on the other hand, has a mechanical issue where it's simply difficult to accurately highlight a section. I never highlighted a paper book, but I use this extensively when reading an ebook. 

Amazon makes buying ultra simple and frictionless. Kobo hasn't ironed out the kinks quite so much. Something like when you shop on Amazon, Etsy, Ebay, the one click is perfect. When you go to a smaller site, it may take a bit extra to get that thing.

Also, Prime relies on the lending library, which I think is when CUSTOMERS lend books to others. Kindle Unlimited is filled with self-publishers and the quality is spotty. Some real gems, some truly awful stuff as well.

To me, the Voyager is the best reader to date, and I've bought backups since they are discontinued. My second favorite is the Kobo Mini. I use that to store paperwork, articles and tickets when I travel.

I love my Kindle. The battery lasts forever. I can get books from the library. The Paperwhite works just fine in any light. Zero complaints.

People keep mentioning that it is closed, so I wanted to clarify if something is different with newer kindles, because I keep sending ebooks to mine even from my phone via email and have been very happy about this feature - did something change?

Like some of the other comments on here, I will say the biggest thing is ecosystem is locked down with Kindles.  You can’t buy books from anywhere and just load it on your device. You have to convert any files to .mobi or .azw3, which can be a pain to do.

Another big sticking point is the fact that you pay $250 for the base 8GB Oasis and then have to pay another $20 to remove the ads from your Lock Screen so you can see the book cover and not have to swipe to unlock. Not to mention that they still put “recommendations” on the Home Screen for books that probably aren’t going to be ones you would read (I used to get recommended sci-if and romance novels all the time when I never read anything similar.)

I ended up getting a Kobo Libra 2 to replace my Paperwhite 3 and I don’t regret it for a minute.  Sideloading is easy since it supports many file formats, Overdrive is supported, the interface is nice and intuitive IMO, it has Pocket integration built-in to save web articles for reading later and it was cheaper than an Oasis for a very similar form factor.  

It does have it’s downsides: the aforementioned highlighting issue and no way to easily export them, no email address to use for sending files wirelessly like Kindles do and the Kobo Store isn’t as seamless a buying experience to name a few.

I have like 9 e-readers, including the new Paperwhite 5. I have the voyage. My favorite ereader is Pocketbook Touch HD. I love the size, form, all the note taking ability, it accepts 19 ebook formats. It is waterproof and has screen warmth. Also their customer service goes above and beyond.

Why do people hate kindle?

 This is great for me as most of my e-books are in the Kindle format. I do find the Boox Note Air to be heavier than expected and I find it a bit more fatiguing to hold than my Kindle. However, the app is responsive and works very well for reading e-books I've purchased through the Amazon eco-system.  I did purchase the cover as part of a bundle and frankly while I think it's functional, it is barely functional

 To be completely honest, PDFs never look good on a 7.8. It's just too small. If you just compare it against two of my hands here, it's just too small of an experience for a full 8

Onyx Boox Nova Air | FULL REVIEW

It is a good device overall but it has security concerns

 My battery life analysis tool places it around 37 hours of read time, however, I wouldn't trust that estimate as battery analysis apps aren't always that accurate. The Nova Air comes with a 1 year warranty, their warranty service does not include shipping fees and that means you pay for shipping if anything goes wrong. However, you don't have to ship to China as Onyx contracts with repair service that is located in Michigan. In other words, you only pay for shipping to Michigan, not to China

 Onyx reps have mentioned that they plan on adding Google Translate in the future, although in my case, Bing seems to be about 90% accurate for languages such as French and Russian. While its 2000mAh battery isn't tiny, it's smaller than the likebook Aries, which has about 3300mAh. Even so, it gets around 7 days of battery life with Wi-Fi on and its front light at 50% brightness with about an hour of reading every day. With Wi-Fi and the front light turned off, the Nova Air gets well over 2 weeks of battery life and possibly a month

 However, it costs $56 less than the Nova Air. I'm not impressed by Bow You's pricing. $56 may not be a trivial amount, but I'd definitely be willing to pay a lot more for the Nova Air's hardware just by itself. But that said, you might have some questions about who Onyx is
