 Another big pro about this player is that it plays every type of content, whether it's a new form of CD, whether it's really high quality CDs, whether it's the super audio, whether it's DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, it plays every type of media you throw at it. And to branch on that, if you plug in with a USB and external hard drive, it plays every type of media file I've thrown at it. I've thrown out MOV, MP4s, FLC files, and it's played everything flawlessly. Now the menu to navigate the player is very modern and very sleek

 I was on the fence for a while about getting this for 4K Blu-rays when it's the Xbox One S, the Samsung, all of these can be had for the sub $250 range. The reason I sprung for this one was because of the build quality. One. Two, this is the only player currently that has Dolby Vision on the market

 We're just talking difference in players here, but it overall gives a much better image. I think it just renders the image better. Now let's get to the Dolby Vision component. So this is the only player with the Dolby Vision that could read Dolby Vision discs

 It offers the most features and virtually indistinguishable image quality.&nbsp;If you're uncomfortable about using a gaming machine as your main player then there are still some good options. While the Samsung UBD-K8500 doesn't support Dolby Vision it's the only mark against that player's name. The Samsung is faster than the Oppo, offers similar image quality, and includes many more features -- and the clincher it's available for half the price

 It's a player with a whole slew of connectivity and support for a wide array of standards.We hate to insert a caveat here but..

 We compared the analog output versus the onboard DAC of the high-end Rotel RAP-1580 receiver. We found the Oppo had better zip with the propulsive Get Lucky by Daft Punk whereas the Rotel seemed a little soft. Pharell's vocals seemed veiled on the Rotel where they were front and center in the Oppos's hands. But as we listened further we found we liked the more relaxed sound of the Rotel as the Oppo made things a little tiring -- particularly the hi-hats

 They simply wouldn’t honor their A-Z guarantee, a first in my experience.  Buyer Beware!

  Long story short: oppo insists on using FedEx (despite the then-exorbitant S&H charged...$83 at that time, now a reasonable $19) which I have had continuous delivery issues with in my area

 So really nice front panel on it, very tough chassis, very stiff. It's got a toroid power supply in it. It's got a very substantial transport in it. And it's got the top of the line ESS DACs, fully differential from input to output

 You've got USB 3.0 and you've got a balanced DAC input for it as well and you've got the analog outputs. So in case you have an older receiver that doesn't do Dolby True HD or Atmos, you can use the analog outputs into your external inputs of your receiver and now you bring new life into your receiver again because this will do the decoding and it also has good base management in it as well. So this one guys is a very good, probably 95% of the customers would go with this route because most people are just using HDMI

 They put a lot of effort into these. They come with a little connection box. You've got a HDMI cable in here. You've got the same remote control they've been using for a number of years, excellent remote control and the power cable as well

The "U" in "UDP" - stands for "Ultimate".

 So right now it's up-converting with its scaler, this 1080p movie, to 4K. So I knew going into this that this was more of a player than I needed, but I like the fact that I could get the best decoder in the industry that can play my discs and play my MKV rips without issue. Unfortunately, it just doesn't do a very good job of those 4K MKV files over the network, and because it is an endangered species, I don't anticipate them improving that function, given that it's not representing a bulk of what their customers are looking for. So for me, I think I'm going to be parting with this player as good as it is and looking at something a little less expensive that I'm going to use primarily as a disc player, and I'll continue to suffer along with my Nvidia shield and the fact that it's not color-switching properly

 We're going to look at how this player performs both in its ability to play back discs, but also its ability to play back movies over the network to see how well it does. Those also take a while to stream up here, so I will back out of the menu here and go over to one of my other Star Wars films. We'll look at Return of the Jedi, and this will also take a little bit of time here as it's thinking about what it's doing. I'm guessing it's caching up some stuff in the background, and then it will start playing back, so that's good

 Otherwise, those traditional Blu-rays don't look right, and that's been a bit of an annoyance for me. So partly why I went after this player is that it supported all the color modes, as I mentioned, but it also is able to very easily switch between resolutions and color modes without a lot of hassle. And I really did need a good optical disc player. I was using the Xbox One S as my optical disc player, but it doesn't handle the HDR color modes all that great

 And I wanted to find the best way to watch these movies on that television upstairs. And today we're going to be taking a look at an endangered species, the UDP-203 from Oppo. This is a 4K UHD Blu-ray player that has been discontinued but is still available. So they're going to be winding down production of these

 So when you're scrolling through the menus down across the bottom, the backdrop drop actually changes to give you kind of different variations. But I think over the plain black background that they used to have on their older predecessor units, this is definitely a much sweeter upgrade. Now for music, photos and videos and networking, these options here are for obviously this network self-explanatory for network streaming. So you can actually extract content from NAS drives or other assisted network devices like computers and stuff like that

 And sometimes I find the button to turn the backlighting on in the dark doesn't really make so much sense. So I'm really glad that they kind of upgraded that and does the auto illuminate. So that's kind of a really nice feature. With the layout of the remote, fairly similar to the predecessors

 These other information here in the menus are for networking and things like that. So if you have a smartphone, you can download a smart app and control it. You can change the name of the unit, especially you have more than one Oppo. You're going to get confusing because that really is not intuitive

 I've updated the firmware a couple of times and that has been a no-brainer. I've tried BluRay and network service over DLNA: both work well. I've had problems with NFS: the player only sees 9 out of 130+ folders on the (Linux) server, whereas with DLNA I can get everything. I pinged customer service and they replied promptly, although the reply was less than ideal: basically, use DLNA, not NFS - but then why advertise it? In any case, that's a minor nit AFAIAC
