 By devoting the majority of my pay checks into this project I finally have a coherent, awesome sounding system. The next thing for me, is getting floor stands for the speakers (as they’re too close to each other atm).

These have sound on par with the higher end speakers I’ve heard at half the price. I cannot emphasise enough how happy I am with them, and they’re a extremely good entry point into the audio world. By devoting the majority of my pay checks into this project I finally have a coherent, awesome sounding system. The next thing for me, is getting floor stands for the speakers (as they’re too close to each other atm)

As a high schooler working part time in a supermarket I went for “bang for your buck” with this. I wanted great sound at a reasonable price.

The whole system is running through an Argon SA-1 amplifier, which I chose because it had all the stuff I needed (at the moment), and had a reasonable price tag. 

Running into that I have a NAD C558 turntable, upgraded with an Ortofon 2M Red pickup. The turntable was mainly picked because of the discount I got, since it was a demo model. It was already a contestant when I was looking, so the offer just gave me the extra push. I was recommended upgrading the pickup, but I wasn’t sure I’d wanna spend those $100+ on one, especially since I had an alright one on it already (Ortofon OM 10), but after I heard the difference I knew I made the right call.

For CD’s I’m using an NAD C538, since I also got that at a bargain. Not much to say here as I mainly listen to vinyl, but I’m happy with the sound off the CD’s I have.

Now to the speakers. These B&W 607’s are out of this world. These have sound on par with the higher end speakers I’ve heard at half the price. I cannot emphasise enough how happy I am with them, and they’re a extremely good entry point into the audio world.

Nice. You're right about the speakers. I went with the 606's, also in white, paired with a Cambridge Audio CXA60. Ridiculously happy with both.

After 1 year into this hobby, sinking most of my pay checks into it, this is my setup. This is what my life has become. (Specs in comments)

 inevitable pops etc.. seem to be pushed to the back, separation of instruments vastly improved as well as more pronounced and defined sound stage. With one preamp, amp combination it was a bit bright

 of course it should be.. 7X the price. Much clearer top to bottom, bass was particularly boosted

I can't imagine how much better a high end MC pick up would be

5i tone arm, an older Riga P5 with the RB700 tone arm and the current Riga P10 with the RB3000 tone arm. All these turntables and tone arms I've mentioned here are on the high side of low mass or just in the beginning ranges of medium-mass tone arm weight ranging from 10 to 12 grams. As shown in the figure on the Artifon website these tone arm 2M Black combinations work quite well. For this video my opinions on the 2M Black sound is mostly based on when used with the Pioneer PLX1000 and this cartridge has spent significant amount of time on this table for about four years now

 My love for this cartridge goes back to over a decade when I bought this new back in 2009 moving magnet. At the time this was Artifon's flagship moving magnet cartridge. Now we have the 2M Black LVB250 that is the top the line for Artifon's moving magnet lineup. So this video is about the standard 2M Black not the Ludwig-Bahn Beethoven edition of the 2M Black

 The realism of Hasinta's vocals, fullness of the horns, the wholeness and the meatiness of the piano is certain to impress you. And then there is this timing and delivery of drumming and the percussion sounds. Snares are snappy and textured and the cymbal taps are airy and very well detailed, not bright at all. Just open sounding and effortlessly detailed reproduction

 Note though that the Riga P10 brought out the best in the 2M Black but most people wouldn't install a $700 cart on a $6300 turntable. Having said all that I must let you know that a lot of care is required to align this cartridge to ensure you get it to sound good and that means nearly perfect overhang, vertical tracking angle and azimuth. Tools like the Dr. Fikert protractor and the Hi-Fi news test record and a good head shell with elongated slots will help you get this cartridge dialed in just right and clean records will definitely help

Ortofon 2M black: Best moving magnet phono cartridge?

Yes huge difference from red, to blue now to black! Your sound is way better, the voices are so much clearer, yes not cheap, but made my higher end Fluence turntable sound great! Yes buy it, I know it's not cheap, but if you want to hear a difference this will do it!

 It feels good. It sounds terrific. Its sound staging for me is far more holographic, to use a cliche, than the Technics. It's more engaging for me

 And that contrasts the Technics as sounding maybe a little bit richer and maybe a little bit more refined, but sort of lacking in that excitement factor that I look for. And I'd quite happily trade a little bit of richness and refinement for that excitement and that verve and that vitality from the sound of my music playback, especially with electronic music. How does this project turntable compare to other turntables? I'm really sorry. I have no idea

The Dali Spektor 2 are great, too, agreed. Best small speakers for under £300 for sure.

OK, this post is definitely pointless fluff, but I have to share with someone how impressed I am with my new Rega Planar 3 turntable. I am not an audiophile by any measure, but me and the SO decided to treat ourselves to a new turntable after a month or so of tough work schedules. I took quite a bit of head scratching to work out how to properly align the cartridge, but we managed.

I have to say this sounds really, really nice. Granted, my old record player was a terrible no-name plastic piece of crap, so the baseline was very low... but this sounds so clean I feel like I'm listening to my records for the first time again. No hiss, no skipping (my old player skipped lots, probably a bad cartridge alignment). There's also a lot more 'space' to the music then there was before.

Set up:

* Rega Planar 3 w/ Rega Elys 2 cartridge
* Onkyo TX-8270
* DALI Spektor 2 (these sound unbelievably good for their size)

Currently indulging in a Magazine's Second Hand Daylight.

New Rega Panar 3 turntable sounds awesome!

Bought this for the replacement stylus only as I all ...

Certainly an upgrade from the Ortofon 2M Blue that had before this! I have it on an older Rega Planar 3 with RB300 tonearm. It pairs up nice and brings out the best of my vintage Bryston 4B, Apt Holman preamp, and Canadian Shurlyn speakers!
