 Currently, what I have in here is the 20 ounce water bottle that I featured in a lot of my other daily bag videos and that fits in there really comfortably. You can see that the compartment is nice and deep, so anything that you place in here isn't going to fall out accidentally and then because of this material. That one also has a pretty comfortable harness system. It's not quite as comfortable as this one

 It has external water bottle pockets, a really well protected laptop sleeve, so it really has some great options to check out. It's going to have maybe a little bit more of a tactical vibe, but if you're looking for something that's just very comfortable and it's going to offer you a lot of different ways to access your stuff, and that's going to be a fantastic option to check out. And then the last option that I'll mention here if you have a little bit of a higher budget is the Air Tech Pack 2, which is a very minimal and stylish tech bag that has a comfortable harness system. It has a ton of organizational options if you like for everything that you carry with you to have its own spot, and that bag is really a dream for just kind of organizing everything

Osprey Apogee Daypack Review - Comfortable and Lightweight 28L EDC / Minimal Travel Bag

I've seen this question asked before but not recently, so I think that merits asking it again, since the market always changes.

After oodles of research and the acquisition of an Aer Flight Pack 2 (19L, full price $160), an Osprey Farpoint S/M (38L, $100 on sale), and a Samsonite Chronolite (40L, superlight superstrong spinner, $200 "clearance"), I have most of my travel and daily carry needs met (at a steep price even with discounts, hello pandemic shopping). However, I still think there is a category I lack--in the 25-30L range. This is a bag (pack) that is ideal for:

1. Daily carry, if it involves tech + workout gear
2. Weekend travel
3. &gt;1 Week of travel (light)

It seems to be that 26, 28, or 30 are the most common sizes out there that claim to satisfy these needs, and 28L is in the middle, and is far removed from the sizes of my other packs, so it wouldn't be a redundant purchase, so I've settled on this one as the ideal size.

I've found a lot of packs that occupy this niche, but haven't found the perfect one yet. I'm wondering if anyone had a recommendation. I'll list some I considered and why I hesitate.

1. Aer Travel Pack 2 Small (Any color): I love the flight pack 2, but this is somewhat pricey, looks the same as the flight pack, giving my travel wardrobe little variety, even with the color options, but otherwise is a nice bag IMO. Probably my top choice despite these drawbacks.

2. Tom Bihn Synik 30: Looks practical, well built, very pricey, I don't like the roundness at all

3. Goruck GR1: Expensive, I am not really into the look (tactical), it lacks water bottle pocket and add-ons look lame, durability is a plus, it is too big for me (I ordered the slick 1000D and it touched my butt)

4. Yeti 28L (I forget the name), Cool, expensive, I have one of their coolers and like it, I am not sure how I feel about having a yeti branded backpack

Features desired:

1. Good hardware and materials (I don't need to elaborate, I am sure most readers here are aware of the options that exist, eg ykk, cordura)

2. Clamshell opening (For travel purposes)

3. Under seat compatibility for flying so it can be a personal item in conjunction with my samsonite that fits under the seat, or a standalone one bag, obviously.

4. Water bottle holder

5. Decent price (If it is hopelessly expensive but goes on sale every now and then, that can be considered)

Clearly I am obnoxiously particular, I hope that isn't frowned upon too much here. I think the research done for my current travel bags was worth it, and I have no real regrets because of it. But I am truly stumped with this one.

 Overall, it is a good looking, functional commuter bag with innovative features and the ability to pack enough to hit the crag or trail right after work that was more secure feeling than my messenger bag I usually use. I like it but there are other bags I'd probably use before this.

 There is already a clip for your keys. Maybe a name badge or wallet? I also had no use for the compression straps on the outside and kept them in their convenient stash pocket for most of the testing. These are some larger zippers I think these are a number a number ten zipper so that's really appropriate and actually works well so you could pull both sides. I Like the finger pulls that Osprey gives you on their bags I Can get even my chunky fingers through and pull down

Osprey Apogee: NO FRILLS Everyday Carry Backpack

 I like a lot of things about this backpack; the size, the sleekness, and the padding. But I don’t like the smaller compartments. Not quite big enough to put my Ti-84 plus CE calculator, the laptop compartment isn’t quite big enough for my Legion 5 pro (which is a 16-inch screen but is 17 in overall dimensions) the water bottle compartment is super cool but is pretty tight on my 32oz Nalgene. The nonscratch compartment is a little finicky to open, and the accessory compartment only has one zipper pull

 As with most other Osprey backpacks, on either side, there are small little elastic loops right here so if you had to hang like a radio here, your sunglasses or any other additional accessory pouches or whatever, you could totally hang them from there. One thing I do feel like could be improved is just that this strap is long and there's nothing to tie it down and they don't have any keepers or anything like that. It would have been nice if they just had like an elastic loop around it just so you can kind of tuck the strap away and it wouldn't be dangling around. It would just been one small nice little feature to have

 whereas this one has actually got some cushiness to it which is very nice. and it's uh, on the back panel there is this kind of this one little mesh material that kind of lines it and it has like the foam padding behind it just to give it some airflow. Now this is not going to be as great as the Osp Tropos which has like essentially almost a backless panel where your back only touches the air mesh. but this one, you know, your back is still going to touch that foam right there

 There's only one zipper bowl just to let you guys know. Um, and it's uh, I was wish that there were two zipper pulls, but it's just the one. which is unfortunate. and this is kind of where you access your administration section

Osprey Apogee - Perfect EDC Size!

 But Osprey doesn’t excel in laptop back packs. While I had no problem packing my laptop and its accessories, the backpack became limited when I wanted to add other stuff. As I packed the main compartment with the majority of my stuff, the other compartments became useless. It’s like the other pockets are sharing space with the main compartment instead of having their own space

Good, but not when fully loaded.

The large main compartment has oversized double zippers that are very easy to use. This along with the semi stiff laptop sleeve makes for easy use.

  The laptop sleeve accepts the laptop without needing to use a second hand to guide it. The side sleeves hold a water bottle firmly, this is great while active but it does take quite a bit of effort to get large Nalgene sized bottles in and out.

  I gave up use on the compression straps because they fully get in the way of zipper use.  I believe with a double zipper at least some items would be accessible without undoing the compression straps.  The three small pockets in this compartment could some size variety.  Some items fit but for the most part they are too small

I am disappointed the other main compartment did not come with double zippers, once you've easily pawed your way into the larger for your laptop you'd expect the same ease to get into the next compartment. The zipper is a single smaller zipper.  I gave up use on the compression straps because they fully get in the way of zipper use.  I believe with a double zipper at least some items would be accessible without undoing the compression straps

Great commuter pack

I'm comparing this to two packs; One is a "business" back pack and my daily commuter, made by a luggage manufacturer.  The Apogee is significantly lighter, with far deeper pockets.  The second pack is similar in nature, and of a well known brand known for ruggedness.  I would say the Apogee is a direct competitor here

  The "easy access" pocket is roomy and seems to be waterproof.  The Front pocket has more than ample space to segregate gear from the padded main compartment and is easy to reach.  It has one zipper here where the main compartment has dual zippers.  I would prefer to see dual zippers on all compartments for easy of entry/ use/ closure

I found the cargo straps on the upper portion of the bag to be inconvenient and often in the way of the zippers.   I also wish there was a place to stowe the torso strap in lieu of leaving either dangling or connected w/o using, as this position seemed to rub against my lower back.  The straps are too long to not connect and dangle/ sway consistently. 

Apogee Pack is a big one....

  I tried multiple adjustments of the straps, but nothing seemed to improve this.  This happened every time I used the pack and often started up not long into the walk.  The pack also contained the same contents as were in my older pack which I have no comfort issues with.  I'll probably continue to use this for trips just to pack things up from one place to the other, but not for walks/hikes due to this

My biggest complaint about this pack was the comfort.  After a two mile walk on an easy trail, my lower back was hurting a good bit and I didn't even have much weight in the pack.
