Wondering what you guys think would be the best all-purpose jacket for a Chicago winter. I’m not a fan of parkas and would prefer a down-puffy jacket (plus a shell for rain). 

I really like the look of Arcteryx products, and the Thorium looks like a great candidate. However, it’s sold out everywhere. 

Any ideas on a nice jacket + shell? Price isn’t a big concern as long as it’s high quality

Best jacket for Chicago winter?

 It makes less of an impact on our environment. The face fabric is polyester taffeta. It has a soft feel and it is stretchy. It has a matte finish so it looks a little nicer than traditional shiny puffy jackets

Please tell me if this is a dumbass idea.

In order to save space and add versatiliy I’m thinking of shifting to a system of carrying a thin down jacket (with no weatherproof outer) with a  separate super thin nylon outer.

So, I can just wear the down jacket to keep warm, but can add the nylon outer as a weatherproof layer if needed. Similarly, the nylon outer can be worn without the down jacket inner for an extra layer when its cool but not too cold.

Specifically, I’m thinking of the Montbell superior down round neck jacket and the Patagonia Houdini nylon jacket (image link below).

 Soft and supple, our women's silent down jacket is insulated with wonderfully warm 700 fill power recycled down, reclaimed from used duck and goose down products. The shell is 100% polyester taffeta with 70% recycled content and a durable water repellent finish that sheds moisture and increases durability. It features mechanical stretch for all day mobility and a supple, broken in feel that's right at home against bare skin. A full zip front extends into the stand up collar to protect your neck and is covered with a snap placket and interior wind flap to keep out the cold

 Despite its quiet name, efficient design and materials speak volumes about the men's Silent Down jacket.

Patagonia Men's Silent Down Jacket

 It's surprising how lightweight and warm it actually is. The only downside for me would be the taffeta fabric because I tend to use this jacket and just wear it all the time so it can get a little beat up. I think that if you want something more durable there's better options from Patagonia and other brands as well but at this point I think we all know what these down puffers are about. So I would recommend this jacket just understand the pros and cons and find it on sale

 This jacket is more for the casual user and casual wear. It's lightweight but warm enough to get you through freezing temperatures. As long as you're not out for hours and sustained wetness or below 20 degree temperatures, you should be good. It's not to work in, the fabric won't hold up, it's a taffeta, and it's not an arctic parka

 But for this jacket and quality outdoor brands, 700 to 900 fill is usually the warmest range with 500 to 650 being the lighter fill. So this jacket is mid-weight and will keep you nice and toasty. You get a full zip up front with zip through stand up collar for warmth and soft comfort on your neck. You also have an insulated stowaway hood with zippered closure for storm protection and it's adjustable as well
