 Driving rain, snow, hail, sleet, deep powder, and wind can't beat this thing. It's built with a durable 75 denier polyester and a three-layer Gore-Tex waterproof membrane to guarantee weather protection. It's loaded with other features to help you stay ready for whatever the mountain throws at you. To keep with Patagonia's commitment to sustainability, the face fabric is 100 percent recycled, which I think is pretty neat

 There is also a DWR finish on the outside to shed that initial precipitation. To get started with the abundance of features, you get a full length front zipper that is highly water resistant. That zipper comes up to an oversized optimal visibility hood that is helmet compatible. The visor is laminated to help keep the structure in nasty conditions

 Under the arms you have these two way highly water resistant pit zips. You can open those up for easy venting without worrying about getting wet. They are also a bit more roomy so the jacket won't lift up as you raise your arms, which is crucial. Another bit that enhances the protection you get with this jacket is in the lower back

 The fit is considered a regular fit. I am wearing a large and it does feel very roomy. The expectation is you are going to have some serious layers under here and I have got plenty of space for a down puffy or more. You do get low profile cuffs with hook and loop closures and a draw cord hem to adjust that fit and seal out the weather

 Today we're going hiking and a tiny little bit of scrambling but I'd be very happy to use this for winter climbing and snow sports as well. Top of the list for me is that it's got its two Napoleon pockets so really high away from the harness away from any slings and any faf. You can get in there at the moment I've got my compass you can use that for your snacks on the multi-pitch climb or your cut down map for when we get into winter stuff. The cuffs are absolutely massive on these but cinched down with proper velcro and they don't get in the way or catch rain or anything they're really good

 Top of the list is its waterproofness, so it's a three-layer Gore-Tex membrane, so it's absolutely bomber waterproof and then the environmental credentials come in straight underneath that with a fully recycled face fabric which Patagonia are groundbreaking in doing and also the garments is Fairtrade certified sewn which doesn't matter when you're out on the hill you just need it to be waterproof but it really is good to see that money gets spent on the people making these jackets in the factories. The Triolet jacket is feature-rich as well so you can use it as a jack of all trades regardless of whatever you plan to do with it. I'm looking at getting a new Patagonia jacket and I think have narrowed it down to one of the three (Calcite/Triolet/Pluma). 

I'm based in Canberra Australia, for those unfamiliar it gets a lot colder here than most parts of Australia.. mornings sometimes down to lower than -5C in winter and summers reasonably mild with mornings averaging around 12C or so. 

I'm looking for a unicorn jacket (which is part of the problem I know) - looking for a jacket I can use when I bike or ride a scooter to work, for hiking in all conditions, for around town when the weather turns and gets wet and wild as well as wearing snowboarding up in the mountains when the snow season is on - plus overseas for snow trips in New Zealand, Canada and Japan. 

Can anyone provide any insights into which would be a good option? Money isn’t really an issue as I don’t mind paying for good gear.

Our needs: we are avid hikers and own enough warm layers. We are looking to buy something that effectively shields us from rain and wind, also at prolonged use.

My partner: he has the option to buy the Triolet at 50%off, which is super heavy duty, or the Storm10 also at 50% off, which he likes for its packability. 

Myself: I have the option of buying the Triolet one size too large, the Ascensionist, or the Galvanized.

Rain shell jacket recommendations

 So right here we have got hand warmer pockets and they are kind of covered by this storm flap here. So these zippers are not watertight, but they do have a nice protective storm flap there so they still get a lot of weather protection as well. And they are set higher so that you can wear a harness or a backpack without hindering the access to these pockets. So you have got really nice construction there

 We have got integrated attachment or adjustment points on the hood here and they are adjusted by these pull cords right outside of the zipper. So you can really tug on those to make the adjustment really easily. And there is also an adjustment on the back of the hood. That way if you are wearing gloves or if you are not wearing a hat you can still adjust and you can still get a proper fit with the hood if you are not wearing a helmet

 Let's take a look at its features. This jacket is constructed with a 40 D material throughout the whole piece with 70 D reinforcement panels. So you have got nice abrasion resistant materials on the outside of the jacket with a nice DWR finish. So it is going to provide really good abrasion resistance, really good durability and overall long life of the jacket

 Gore-Tex is guaranteed to keep you dry and this jacket ensures that you stay protected from those seriously harsh storms. So you have got really nice mix of durable materials here with that tried and true Gore-Tex membrane. Make this a fully waterproof piece that is going to give you excellent protection. Some of the other features on this jacket include watertight zippers

  Table of Contents Performance Weather Protection Using a thick 75-denier face fabric and proven 3-layer Gore-Tex construction, the Patagonia Triolet Jacket feels nearly fortress-like in rough and rowdy weather. I gave the jacket a full shakedown—from late winter hikes in the Cascade Mountains to almost a full season of use as my primary backcountry and resort ski shell—and it never let me down. Transitioning while backcountry skiing on the aptly named Windy Ridge, I threw the Triolet on, cinched the hood, and was extremely impressed by how well it shut out the strong side gusts. And the jacket's excellent performance held true in wet conditions too

 That said, the Galvanized incorporates 12 percent spandex into its design, which boosts mobility and comfort considerably. It also has a trimmer cut that’s easier to wear over just a thin midlayer or baselayer, and it’s the more breathable option too. All things considered, the Triolet is the more capable and feature-rich design for extended backcountry use, but the Galvanized is plenty of shell for most uses and wins out in a few key areas, including comfort, stretch, and overall fit (for more, see our in-depth Galvanized review).
