 Coming back to the present, to take a look at the RGB-enabled Patriot Vipersteel RGB DDR4-3200 2x16GB, can we answer the question as to whether RAM is cooler back then without RGB LEDs? It really depends what your definition of cool is, but if overclocking is part of the equation, I will have to say this kit will blow you out of the water. I was able to take it from DDR4-3200 to DDR4-4000 Prime95 stable with a slight relaxation of timings. This represents a rather impressive 25% overclock, a figure that I have not been excited for since the late 2000s with the OZZ ReaperX HPC enhanced bandwidth. Of course, I cannot guarantee this will be the case for all Patriot Vipersteel RGB DDR4-3200 kits you buy off the shelf, but at the very least, there is good potential you can get lucky with the Spectac integrated circuits inside

Great for the cost

 Now, Patriot's Viper Steel RGB series comes in a variety of flavors, with speeds ranging from 3200 all the way up to 4133 MHz, and with timings of CL16 up to 20. The kit we'll be working with includes two 16GB modules, with a rated speed of 3600 MHz and CL20 timings. Now, 3600 MHz has proven to be more than enough to get the most out of current-gen systems, but I do worry that the higher latency could hold the kit back a little. But we'll find out soon enough

 Yeah, that doesn't seem to be the case here. Whether we're looking at productivity or gaming benchmarks, the Viper Steel RGB running at stock clocks and timings falls well behind the kit from Crucial, and in some benchmarks the margin is very significant indeed. Luckily, upping the kit's speed to 3800MHz and tightening timings to CL18 resulted in a very healthy performance uplift, to a point where the gap between the kits almost maybe sort of becomes negligible in most cases. Even tighter timings would have probably put the Viper Steel RGB at the same level as the Crucial kit, or due to the higher clock speed would have seen it dominating its competition outright

 Oh, and all the tests were run with the rest of the clocks running in a one-to-one configuration. So, let's get into it. Now, as more and more numbers start popping up, it should become clear that things didn't turn out quite as expected. I knew going into this that the Viper Steel RGB would struggle a little because of its comparatively loose timings, but I figured the higher clock speed would make up for most of that

 So then after the overclocks and after the benchmark performance, we kind of go over, you know, talking about everything we did. We go over the pros and the cons. The pros being the lifetime warranty, the low voltage, great price for the offering, the fact that it's RGB. Even with the hills for the RGB, the memory is relatively low profile, aggressive and competitive pricing

 But then on the same one, the graphics test one, the 3,200 MHz beat it out. Then under 7-Zip, which most of you are going to use for compression, but it actually does have a benchmark. We can see that the 3,500 MHz came up above everything else, kind of like we would have expected. Then on AIDA64 Extreme, we can see everything came up on top on the 3,500 MHz beat it out

 Okay, you see how that turns on and off. Then we have Viper. Okay, then we have heartbeat. Marquee, which is the one you saw earlier

 To me, you can't go wrong on this RAM, you know, the RAM is a decent speed, 3200 megahertz, you can always overclock it, and then on the RGB side, Patriot does also sell up to 4133 megahertz, so if you don't like this one, you can just get the 4133 megahertz, so again, on par, if not better than the competition, and the pricing on this guy is incredibly aggressive. Fast, low-profile and beautiful

 It feels really light compared to some kits, but since it didn't seem to affect performance at all, and DDR4 is just kind of low power and doesn't seem to get overly hot, it just doesn't matter, and that's what surprised me. Like, I'm at this point where it's like, you know, if you have any kind of heat spreader on DDR4, you're doing pretty darn good. Viper is including in this kit a default speed of 3,000 megahertz, which isn't the biggest speed that you're ever going to get, but as we're going to see really quickly, speed doesn't matter. Going into those benchmarks, guys, I mean, Aida64 is always a great memory benchmark that kind of shows you how much difference, you know, the different RAM speeds can make

 Viper is including in this kit a default speed of 3,000 megahertz, which isn't the biggest speed that you're ever going to get, but as we're going to see really quickly, speed doesn't matter. Going into those benchmarks, guys, I mean, Aida64 is always a great memory benchmark that kind of shows you how much difference, you know, the different RAM speeds can make. And as usual, you know what? This RAM performed right where we would expect it, and even with the overclock, we didn't do too bad with getting an unsizable boost. But after that, doesn't seem to make a huge amount of difference

 And then by the time we get into a quick little gaming benchmark with running Far Cry 5, well, hey, yeah, once again, one frames per second could just be margin of error. There is just, you're not going to get massive gaming performance through RAM speed. But what I was impressed with is this little heat spreader still gave us some decent overclocking results. Not the best that I'd ever seen, but not bad

 I'll have it either in the description below, or I'll have some extra cards and things during and at the end of this video. But outside of that, let's just jump right into it. So, the heat spreader on this guy is pretty straightforward. It feels kind of thin, and it's just a little bit

Viper RGB RAM - Review

The RGB is fantastic!

 And yeah the white heat sink make it very much unique and stand out. These are the DDR4 3000 kit. I'm expecting some decent performance from these, mostly more importantly the RGB effects. I will be mounting this onto the ASUS ROG Strix B360F gaming motherboard and that will give it the ASUS Aura Sync effects
