 I didn't obsess over it I actually don't think it's healthy to obsess over it There's kind of neat to see hey, where are you and you could be running and training like crazy? But if your sleep sucks and you've been traveling a lot This is gonna affect your charge and your ability to train so really helpful information for runners This watch even has a few more features that I wasn't even able to dig in yet one is this serene feature Which is kind of cool It's off of the training button and you can set some breathing exercises for yourself if you want to set your inhale or exhale Five seconds in five seconds out if you guys know us from the run experience We do a lot of breathing exercises for runners. It's key. I thought that was super cool that this was built in This thing also has Strava life segments that you can set up and load So if you're trying to be that guy or gal and get that KOM or QM you can see where you are right there Basic timers, honestly, I use this timer a lot for when I'm cooking and grilling out back. It's just super easy And it's got some different fitness tests you could do if you wanted to establish your own heart rate or power meter zones here It'll actually walk you through it, which is fantastic As well as you know functions for different settings a lot of really great stuff The other cool thing that I want to show you real quick I haven't gotten a chance to play with this too much is right here It's got this strength and support section and it's got little workouts built in here and as a strength and mobility coach I kind of love this this kind of tickled me a little bit so I could tap one of these things and I could scroll down and Look how cute and charming these little stick figure guys are right

There's a lot of bells and whistles in this thing I've run with it for the previous six months You can see by my nice little watch tan right here that I've basically kept it on the entire time So I'm excited to dig in my first impressions what it was like to train with it Did this thing actually deliver on what Polar promised as well as some final recommendations whether this would be a right watch for you first Let's dig into just first impressions of this thing You know I'm used to the old GPS watches of the past that were these like big bricks on your on your wrist and I just love This slimmed down sleek design I could wear it while running. I would leave it wearing without it My wife would never harass me say hey get that ugly thing off your wrist, which is always a good thing So I just love the feel of it. I loved the Display, it's color

 It also shows your 28 day average over the last 20 days I'm just bragging right now because I've been sleeping so well 20 to average of 8 hours and 10 minutes But then it also shows your actual sleep Okay, I was in bed for 8 hours and 15 minutes by only slept 8 hours and 19 minutes Which means that I had some little interruptions in there. So it shows your continuity Honestly, I don't really know what that means fully But it shows that of a five scale of five How good your sleep was I think it shows your long interruption You know how if you're up in the middle of the night we tossing and turning a little bit It shows your sleep cycles your REM cycle your deep sleep your light sleep It just got all of these different features in here as well as a rate of how much you did So I found this a cool thing to run in the background. The Polar Vantage V Review  |  Is It Worth the $$$?

So I’m finally at a point in my running where I think I need to ditch my Apple Watch 4 and get a “real” watch.

Context: running 50-72 miles a month (not a lot in general but a lot of me although I’m still somewhat slow 9-10 min/mile), 152 lbs, 50s. 

Got into running seriously 1-1/2 years ago and love it. I’m a bit of a data geek (into shoes, form, nutrition, training).

Looking for something that is reliable (recently got the Polar H10 HRM), run mostly by heart rate and sometimes pace. Trying to follow the 80/20 rule for aerobic/anaerobic (not quite MAF). 

I’d like the watch for GPS, heart rate tracking, training, recovery, battery life, and hopefully some running form feedback (l/r, vertical velocity, ground contact time, etc.) so I can improve.

I don’t listen to music or audio and looking primarily for the key features above. I don’t need superfluous bells and whistles.

Would appreciate advice between the models listed above. Or others. And why.

If I should be thinking differently and if I’m not quite there yet for a sports watch, let me know.

Coros Apex vs Garmin 645 vs Polar Vantage V2?

 It really only works when walking around and sleeping, but as soon as you work out and start sweating onto the skin, the OHR goes totally off the grid and you’re right back to having to use the chest strap. Also, the swim measurements still only work for meters! Seriously Polar? Sloppy and lazy execution! Using the Garmin 935 for now, better all around attention to detail and no false claims about their OHR being a replacement for the HR strap!  Great features on this watch for sure, the best being the ability to set a baseline to observe running power, and getting a sense of swim HR load without a strap. Overall, I think they released this too soon, there seem to be a lot of issues they need to address with firmware updates.  - The biggest issue is that as soon as the wrist starts getting really soaked in sweat the HR measurement starts spiking, which completely ruins the ability to track HR averages for laps, as well as accurate training cardio load etc

  Agree with the other reviewers, this feels like the buyer is part of a beta test, seems like Polar rushed to market before the holidays with a 75% product, the OHR just dos not work as advertised for long and intense sessions.

 I have sent messages to Polar, and the standard response is that they are working on all issues with future firmware updates. - They recently fixed running pace that was showing up as min/100 yards in Triathlon mode, - but for example, the most recent firmware shows a green sync check on the app and the data is transferred with no issue, but the watch beeps and says it couldn't sync. That is just sloppy coding and testing.  - It's also poor marketing that the flagship product does not have features that other models have, e

 This issue seems to be more related to salt and sweat than water, since it seems to track better in the pool. With all the investment in the new HR sensor to give athletes the option to avoid the use of a strap, this is just not acceptable. Fantastic potential, but released too soon with false claims of OHR accuracy

 You have to come up with your own algorithm, but the last annoyance that I have with this Polar Vantage V2 would be the price. This watch comes in right at $500, which I still think is really expensive for a triathlon watch. I know that a lot of triathlon watches have kind of honed in on this $500 range, but I'd still love to see more options in that kind of sub $300 range. Okay, I do appreciate that you guys have stuck around through this video

 We might even get crazy. We might even mix it up, and we might do some non-freestyle different strokes within our workout, but the point is I need a watch that can actually account for all of that and allow me to still have an accurate distance when I'm done, and I would say for these companies to kind of look at what Garmin is doing, they actually have a drill mode, which seems to work pretty well, but even better than Garmin, I would say have a look at what form swim goggles are doing. They're actually using an accelerometer, and they're pairing that with their own proprietary algorithm just to determine which type of stroke you're actually doing, and then they'll provide the user with kind of a ton of different metrics and a breakdown of when you used each stroke. You can actually go check them out and just copy what they're doing sort of

 When we do the giveaway, I'll give you guys the option of picking between this white one and another black version of the same watch. Now I found the GPS accuracy to be accurate enough. One of the features of this watch is how they've incorporated the GPS antenna into the aluminum watch body. That should provide a better signal

When I run I get sweaty, or sometimes it rains and watch touchscreens become useless. Even in perfect conditions they're hard to use while running!

It is getting hard to find a watch that you can just use as a GPS watch with a few other sports related features. I used to be a Garmin die-hard but I just looked at their website and it seems they've have gone off the deep end with touchscreens and useless social media features that actively degrade the utility of their watches for going for a run.

Are there any sports watch models out there that:

- use buttons only (no touchscreen)
- have longish battery life (survive a 15hr ultramarathon on a full charge)
- fairly simple UI (not a luddite but I don't need to get text messages and 300 other pointless services on my watch. I'll check my phone later thanks)
- look fairly nice (I managed to get a Garim Fenix 3 which is from just before watches jumped the shark, but its battery is now ageing and it would be nice to have something a little sleeker in appearance. The ol' Fenix 3 is a clunker, much as I love it).

Running Watches without Touchscreens

 - Battery life is a bit shorter than expected. I'm getting about 4 days out of the watch with continuous HR monitoring while exercising every 1-2 days. - Heart rate sometimes spikes while I'm resting. My other devices may say 60 bpm but Polar will spike up to 90 bpm for a few minutes

Great hardware, mediocre software

 One important thing to note is this is a beta unit, it did not come in a retail box so there will be no unboxing in this video. This basically showed up in a Ziploc bag with a charger and that was about it. I think the firmware in here is production worthy, I could be wrong, so take that for what it's worth. The Garmin ecosystem has been having sales off and on this year (at least in the U.S.). Like others in this thread, I have -- and like/recommend -- a 935.   The 735XT is also well regarded (but less capable).

In addition to what you're looking for, it has a 'triathlon' mode which will time your events (including transitions) -- you hit the 'lap' button between each.  If you've seen the multisport graphics posted on here, they're often utilizing that feature.  Not all Garmins come with that.

Based on your price range, the Garmin 935 is probably the best option. It does everything you want and more. It’s lightweight and has great battery life. 
A used Garmin Fenix 5 would also be a solid choice.

I have owned Polar heart rate watches for over 20 years. They all have issues, but generally live up to promises. The predecessor to this watch, the V800, gave bad HR information in the first 10 minutes of a run, usually. Other than that, the watch was great
