As another user mentioned, PSB Alpha AM3 are a great option. Their passive counterpart, the Alpha P3, are phenomenal speakers. If you can get those and a cheap amp you'll be very happy.

Must be a:

* 2.0 pair (Out of respect for the people living below me)
* Enough bass on their own without a subwoofer (without sounding overly boomy. Adjustable bass is best).

* Good for low-volume listening

2.0 Computer speakers under 8inch and 500$, are those good picks?

Very compact, decent sound for the size

Perhaps they aren't your style, but I've been incredibly happy with my Klipsch R-41M's. Really compact for a bookshelf, and I've greatly enjoyed the sound they can produce for a nearfield setup.

I love my MarkAudio Tozzi One speakers. Buy them as a "kit" to save money and you literally just screw the driver's in, run a cable from the driver to the binding posts, and screw the enclosures together.

The bass is astonishing for their size, and the overall timbre of the driver is great. They're excellent little speakers for the price.

Would prefer to keep it at 4-4.5" drivers since all the larger ones I saw are too big for desk (wharfedale 225, jbl a130, etc).

So, any recommendations under 300? I was looking at psb p3, dali spektor 1. Any other suggestions? I saw the ASR review for dali and the p5 (not p3) were pretty meh but I'm not sure how much to trust that.

4" passive desk speakers under $300?

 They are clear and detailed and never sound strained. When blended with a decent subwoofer, it all comes together beautifully. When I initially purchased the P3’s, I kept my old Energy speakers as rears but ended up buying another pair of P3s for the rear. Visually, the walnut wrap on the speakers is quite nice

I bought the PSB Alpha P3's and the C10 centre to replace a set of Energy Take Classic satellite speakers in a secondary home theatre room. The Energy’s satellites have a frequency response cutoff at 110-120hz, resulting in too much upper bass coming out of the sub (including male voices), causing too much boomy bass and some muddled voices. I wanted something with a solid response down to 70-80Hz. Due to a furniture shelving unit, I was extremely limited with the height of the speakers I could purchase (I didn’t want to lay them sideways, as it would affect sound dispersion)

 If I had the space, I definitely would have purchased the larger P5’s or the T20 (tower speakers are the way to go) but with the limitations of my environment, I’m thoroughly satisfied with the P3’s and they turned out to be a nice step-up from what I had... Just don't forget a subwoofer to fill in the lower frequency gap left by these speakers

Hey! So I am setting up a system where I can listen to vinyl/music in stereo and movies in surround. Just picked up a used Onkyo TXNR828 receiver. Have a Fluance RT82 turntable. Going off memory so I’m not 100% sure if those are exact model numbers. Current main speakers are just some random Yamaha bookshelf speakers, which I want to shift to use as the rears. I realize I’m not working with top of the line gear and I’m not looking to get the best of the best. Don’t know a lot about speakers, just want everything to sound nice. Looking for the best current deal on a pair of floor standing front speakers. Preferably with enough bass to not need a sub, but I have a serviceable sub I can use if need be. Bookshelfs are fine too if there are good options. Ideally $300 or less for the pair. I’d really love some recommendations on any great deals.

Yes, they should be noticeably better than the soundbar, since you'd actually have stereo separation. I was bored one day and swapped my desktop's PSB Alpha P3s with the COVO-S I had lying around, just to see what the difference in sound was.

I'm looking to upgrade my office PC speaker setup. It currently has the attached Dell AC511 soundbar which is...fine, but I'm looking for something better. Budget of $100-200. I'm open to either active speakers or a set of small passives with an amp. At home I use Yamaha HS's at my desk and Micca PB42s's for the TV.

First, I have to figure out the placement. I have 2 monitors and my laptop opened on the desk, so space is a bit tight. If I place the speakers on my desk, I'd have to lay them on their side and one speaker would have to go under my laptop stand which has a clearance of roughly 5.5 inches. The other option would be to place them in my hutch above my monitors, which means the speakers will be above eye level, but it would loosen my size constraints. 

Neither placement options are ideal, but which would be better in my situation?

If I opt to place them on the desk, what are the best speakers with a max width of 5.5 inches? The one's I've looked at are the Dayton B452, Micca Covo-S, and the Audioengine A1. Are there any others I'm missing? 

The Covo-S would fit best size wise, but the reviews on them are not great. But surely they'd sound better than the little USB soundbar attached to my monitor?

Office 2.0 Setup - Limited Space

Great sounding speakers. These actually have a bigger sound stage than they look. The bass is surprisingly deep for 4" woofers, and the midrange is tight and detailed. The only annoying part is the upside-down tweeter placement, so I had to raise my speaker a little bit higher than I would've liked

I went through this exercise recently, here is my thread.  I ended up paying more to get the Emotiva Airmotiv B1+ which are great (but the price has increased to $300 since I bought them).

Do not try to use the Micca OoOs nearfield, the sweet spots are very narrow.  I found this out the hard way so you don't have to.

Also, if you like brightness, you'd probably want to avoid anything Micca, as all of their speakers have a rolled off high end.

I am looking for best bang for my buck speakers around $150-200. I know there are a lot of posts like this and I've read most of them. My desk situation is a little unique, I have an L shaped desk that extends to the middle of the room in my home office. My speakers are and will be on the section in the middle of the room. I currently have Cerwin Vega LS-8 bookshelf speakers powered by an SMSL SA-50. The speakers are over 20 years old and one of the woofers has 2-3 cuts in the surround. They are also big for my desk at 10" wide and 17" tall. I'm looking for something a little smaller that will sound good 7-8ft from the wall. I'm not an Audiophile. I like somewhat bright speakers, but not harsh. I'd like a speaker that sounds good a low to medium volumes.

In the US and can buy from any online store.

Budget &gt;$200, would prefer to stay $100-150.

I've looked at Micca OoO, JBL Stage A120, Kanto YUP4 or 5.25, Jamo S803, Neumi BS5 was on the list but out of stock until March. I'm not sure I like the sound of RB42 and I'm not sure the SA-50 will do them justice based on Youtube.

<div class="md"><p>I am looking for best bang for my buck speakers around $150-200. I know there are a lot of posts like this and I&#39;ve read most of them. My desk situation is a little unique, I have an L shaped desk that extends to the middle of the room in my home office. My speakers are and will be on the section in the middle of the room. I currently have Cerwin Vega LS-8 bookshelf speakers powered by an SMSL SA-50. The speakers are over 20 years old and one of the woofers has 2-3 cuts in the surround. They are also big for my desk at 10&quot; wide and 17&quot; tall. I&#39;m looking for something a little smaller that will sound good 7-8ft from the wall. I&#39;m not an Audiophile. I like somewhat bright speakers, but not harsh. I&#39;d like a speaker that sounds good a low to medium volumes.</p>

<p>In the US and can buy from any online store.</p>

<p>Budget &gt;$200, would prefer to stay $100-150.</p>

Desktop Recommendations

These speakers look and sound good. They have a surprisingly good low range for the power and overall sound nice and smooth. They have a stylish look and fill up a mid-sized room with no problem; again for the power rating of 60 watts pretty decent overall. The compact size allows you to find a spot for them pretty easily and doesn't require a heavy duty wall mount if you choose to do it that way
