 Hey guys it's Chris here from Pi Supply and today's unboxing video are going to be taking a look at the Pi PoE hat. Now this hat allows you to power your Raspberry Pi as well as provide data connection via ethernet. So without further ado let's take a look and see what's inside. So first up we have a welcome card by Pi Supply

 So what else we've got here? We've got some standoffs to mount the Pi PoE hat to the Raspberry Pi. We've also got a short ethernet connector. This will connect the Pi PoE hat to the Raspberry Pi's ethernet port. So let's take a look at the Pi PoE hat

 So here we have the Pi PoE hat which has a 40-way GPIO header. It's compatible with any Raspberry Pi that has an ethernet port and a 40-pin GPIO header connector. So it has two ethernet ports. One uses the jumper cable to connect to the Raspberry Pi like so

 This will connect the Pi PoE hat to the Raspberry Pi's ethernet port. So let's take a look at the Pi PoE hat. So here we have the Pi PoE hat which has a 40-way GPIO header. It's compatible with any Raspberry Pi that has an ethernet port and a 40-pin GPIO header connector

extremely loud, even under light load.

 One thing that kind of bugged me is that when it's on these spacers, the PoE hat just barely makes contact with the GPIO pins. Just barely. I mean to the point where I wasn't even sure if it was going to actually turn on. You can see, see if I can do a good shot of this here

 Now when you're putting in these standoffs, one thing that I recommend is to put the screw through on the bottom and then put your finger on it and then flip it over and then you can screw the standoffs on very easily. And then once you're ready to put the PoE hat on, it simply sits right on top. Like I said, you don't really have to push it down too much. It kind of just sits on top of the pins even though it does still work

 Normally I run Raspberry Pis without a fan, but this fan when you put it on here, when you line it up correctly with the Raspberry Pi 3, the fan sits directly over the CPU and the heat sink. Now one thing is that you can't use a very large heat sink for the fan, it has to be able to fit underneath the Raspberry Pi hat. So they make sort of like these half size heat sinks that work just perfectly fine with the PoE hat. Okay so when you buy this PoE hat, it does come with these standoffs here so you can see these spacers and you are able to line it up directly

 It does work, but it is spaced off of those GPIO pins pretty drastically. Now one thing I'm not sure about is whether you can actually utilize the GPIO pins. Now maybe there's a way to, you know once this is on, you know solder or make connections through the holes that are on the top of the PoE hat, but it just seems like it would make it much more difficult whereas the previous PoE hat that I reviewed actually was kind of a pass through where it went on top of these pins and the tops of the pins on the Raspberry Pi board itself actually stuck out through the top of the PoE hat. It kind of just fit into this space like this

Fan whine is terrible

 Fortunately for me, if you stick it into the GPIO pins, it is solid enough where I am not using it because I am actually plugging this to my 10 inch Raspberry Pi rack. And if I was to mount the Raspberry Pi to the rack, then I don't have any screw holes to mount the actual hat onto that. If that makes sense, but ultimately this is a perfect combination for anything server related, or if you're using digital signage, you don't have to run a power cord, you can just run everything through the network port. Now, one of the coolest things that I was attempting with this guy was since this new one actually provides more power, I was going to see if I could actually power another Raspberry Pi, just using one POE hat

Now this new version of the hat is allowed to use 802.3 AT, which allows a maximum wattage of 25.5, which is a huge difference because the biggest problem with the first version release, while it was powerful enough to power the Raspberry Pi and use anything you can, once you start putting something into the USB port, like a hard drive or two hard drives or something that takes a lot of wattage from the ports itself, that's where it's not able to support it

 So let's get started. I do want to thank Raspberry Pi Foundation for sending this over to me. It is something I actually had to keep my mouth shut about because I knew about this for weeks. And when I was doing my 10 inch server rec project, a lot of you guys were commenting, why not use the POE? So I did come up with other ideas on what I could do to power Raspberry Pi on the 10 inch rack besides the POE, but now here it is

 Troubleshot it down to this PoE Hat. I bought another brand, and will update the review if that one works out better. Surprised I would get this type of issue on the official PoE Hat.

I bought this PoE hat to use with a Raspberry Pi 4 figuring it would be the best because it made by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and is the official PoE hat. I assumed it would be the best on the market but I was wrong.  -The fan is really loud and clicks on/off every minute which is very annoying. There is no way to adjust the fan speed, it has 3 modes, off, medium and high

 -It blocks all the GPIO ports when it only needs to access a few power pins. -It is so large it blocks airflow to the Pi which prevents using other fans. -The fan only works with the Raspbian OS, it will not run with other Operating Systems.  I found better, cheaper 3rd party PoE hats

Better PoE options from unofficial vendors

  This is the latest model and doesn’t have the temprature issues and the extra components are directly soldered to the circuit board instead of having board on board soldering (initial quick and dirty fix by Raspberry foundation)
