 This is a technically a frameless back pack. It has no suspension system or aluminum or plastic or any kind of stiff frame in here. It does have a little bit of a thin foam piece, call it a back panel. You can actually open up the water bladder and pull this back panel out like so and this is basically is offering you a little bit of support on your back and what if you're out and about on your day hike? you can actually pull this out and just set it right on the ground, pop a seat on that

 The same goes for the adjustable strap. Down here. you simply pull in each of these sides to go ahead and get the proper fit that you're looking for. Also on the sternum strap here you also have a built in integrated whistle

 But if you do have the trekking poles attached to the package so you can't expect the pack is, sit up very nicely.  The side pocket is several inches shorter. This is enough of a difference that when I pick up the pack, my water often falls out.

The old version had a zipper pocket in the interior of the pack’s body. This is the feature I'm missing most. The new design has no good place to put my wallet and keys. I don't want those on an exterior pocket, as those pockets contain things I want to access during the hike (sunscreen, food); nor do these pockets have key loops (unlike the older version, where every pocket had a key loop)

For context, what I want out of this pack is to use it on long day hikes (8 - 14 miles) with a lot of elevation gain. I carry something like the Ten Essentials. I don't use a bladder; both side pockets carry water.

Hi and welcome to Gigi takes a look Today We're going to be taking a look at the new Rei Flash 22. the Flash 22 was just recently released by Rei and features a few new things in comparison to the old Flash 22. that being a side zipper where you can fit a good amount of stuff.  so you open it up actually. First it does have the same zipper to the attached brain which is which is fairly good size. I can stick my hand in here and then you open it up and let's see it comes open like that and it has a little attachment here. If you have a water bladder, you can put your water bladder back here and it actually does have what you might call a seat pad which the older version has as well and this can come out but this actually gives some structure to the pack and inside

 Now the old Flash 22, you could actually detach the straps but on this version you can't and see it does the same same thing on this side. You can tuck it in here and then they're gone. It also has the sternum strap which can be removed, it just attaches like that and it does have the little whistle in case you get in trouble. The other difference is it has two straps to get into it whereas the old version right here it just has the single strap which honestly I prefer

New 2022 REI Flash 22

It was perfect for what I needed, but that's not to say it's perfect. I spent a month living out of my big hiking pack in Nicaragua and Hawaii and wanted something small that I could stuff in the big bag, therefore a day pack with a more rigid back wouldn't work as either it wouldn't fit in the big bag or would be inflexible and take up too much space. So for that it was perfect. That said, whenever I wear it I wish it was something a little better

 However, it is surprisingly comfy, giving you good support when you're carrying your items with you. Even though it offers minimalistic features, this characteristic does not take away from its clever build that sees to it that every part offers incredible support for its users. Mostly Good...

Purchased for my wife's day hiking activities. She generally carries around 8lbs with a 2 liter bladder included. After three outings the straps began to pull apart. Replaced it with an REI Trail 25, and which has held up fine

Weak Straps

 Most backpacks don't have cleaning instructions. However I have to return the backpack because one part of its design does not suit me. The shoulder straps seem to be made so as to fit a person with broader shoulders. Of course when a backpack is filled with items it can fit differently than if it is empty

 The stitching and reinforcements are of good quality work. Of course I have not tried the item on a long term basis but it seems well made. One common problem with backpack shoulder straps is that they are made of material that is not breathable and can make you perspire more on a hot day. Besides that, the shoulder straps can absorb sweat and then themselves develop a bad smell

 The mesh-like shoulder straps are great for ventilation. The material seems rugged enough for the lightweight fabric that it is. The stitching and reinforcements are of good quality work. Of course I have not tried the item on a long term basis but it seems well made
