 You're going to get much better response here, as you can tell from this particular case. So this is going into the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K using the Rode VC-1 extension cable. Let's give you a few moments of silence here so we can use that to evaluate the practical self-noise of this microphone in this room with this camera. So the camera had the audio input just to kind of give you some background

 Now this is the older generation VideoMic Pro, and this is the, by that I mean the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus, older than the NTG. This one is also boomed just out of the frame here, and also going into the video camera here, which is a Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Let your ears choose which one sounds best to you. And then finally, the VideoMic NTG seemed to fare better in our RF interference tests than the D3 Pro did

 So this has a lot of the features. In fact, some people say that a lot of the features we're now seeing on the VideoMic NTG look to be inspired by the Deity V-Mic D3 Pro, and then they added a few additional things as well. So let's give you a few moments of silence just to use that in our practical noise floor comparison. Here's a sample with the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus

 Alright so at the risk of sounding a little bit hyperbolic I honestly think that this microphone is the new gold standard for camera top shotgun mics. And first up in terms of pros I did not mention this in the specs section but this microphone has an auto on off feature where it will turn on when your camera turns on and it will turn off when your camera turns off so you don't have to fiddle around with a power switch and worry if your battery is dying because you forgot to turn the mic off. Secondly for a shotgun microphone it has a very respectable self noise of 15 dBA. I also absolutely love the fact that they have numbers on the gain dial making it very easy for you to recall what level you recorded at at an earlier date

So for years I have relied on my Sony HXR-NX30 (❤️) and the stock rifle mic it came with for audio. I also picked up a Rode VideoMic for my A7iii and I also have a wireless lav mic but its a piece of shit.

I want to upgrade my audio as cost effectively as possible. I'm not looking for the best, just better than what I currently have. Specifically some kind of a boom/rifle mic as well as a good quality affordable radio lav. Also should I consider getting a zoom recorder?

Affordable Mics &amp; Sound

 What I mean is that if you are not going to do all those things, but just one specific scenario, such as streaming, there are better and cheaper options like ElGato Wave 3 or the ATR 2100x in case you have too much background noise.  Why do I recommend those? Simple, for streaming, voiceovers, podcasts or most scenarios where the mic is just a few inches in front of your mouth, you will face the risk of overdriving the mic capsule and sound like if you were clipping, when clearly you are not, not even activating the -20db mode will prevent this and if you are a person who tends to talk loud or scream into the mic, I'm pretty sure you don't want to spook your viewers, not even adding a deadcat and the included foam will prevent this, though I recall, this happens if the mic is less than 15cm from your mouth, so yes a niche use case scenario but to keep in mind since the mic markets its USB C to USB mic capabilities, you won't be able to turn off the live feedback if you plug your headphones into it, so it can be quite distracting.  Next to keep in mind is that these 3.5mm TRS/TRRS shotgun microphones from Rode tend to have a bass rich sound, in the case of the NTG, the signal is much cleaner and won't sound as muffled as previous models, however in comparison to Condenser Microphones, it will still be too much bass, with a low mix of mid and high tones, there are Low Cut Filters included, but for best results I recommend to keep the default signal and then do some EQ boosting the treble mostly, this way you can get a trully outstanding sound but it will add some steps and tweaking into post production which you will need to keep in mind  The most notable CON is the battery, though I love the function where it automatically turns on and off when you are using it with a camera, you don't have a way to monitor the battery life and is either pure luck or having to charge it more than usual to make sure it will turn on in set

 But now let's do a quick head-to-head sound comparison between the two. So here's the microphones mounted back onto my camera again, you're listening to the Rode VideoMic NTG right now, and this is the DD D3 Pro. But if I point it back towards me and sort of more away from the road, you should be getting a lot less of that traffic noise muddling up my dialogue, and my voice should sound much clearer. And this should also be good to give you a general idea of what this mic sounds like outdoors

 But the VideoMic NTG sounding so close to the NTG5 was a pleasant surprise given that the NTG5 is a $500 microphone, which is double the price of the VideoMic NTG, so I think it's quite remarkable that the VideoMic NTG can hold itself up against a mic positioned to higher up in the professional range. There is also one concern about this mic that many reviewers have already brought up, and that's how the built-in battery in the VideoMic NTG is not user replaceable. And that's a concern because it's no secret that lithium-ion batteries have a limited lifetime. But then the same issue can be mentioned for a lot of products from many manufacturers that make products with built-in batteries, but if Rode made it similar to what they did with the VideoMic Pro Plus, which was a removable rechargeable lithium-ion battery, I think it would have been one less regret for the VideoMic NTG

You are describing the Rode Videomic NTG. Except for the price. Incredible mic though. Amazing sound and so versatile! Or you could get a cheap small diaphragm condenser like the Behringer c2 and an audio interface

Long story short, I might be looking for a the unicorn of microphones. I'd like a mic that will work well from 1-2 feet away and won't pick up all sorts of background noise (my current workspace is a kitchen table and I use a mechanical keyboard lol fml). 

I'll be using the mic for video calls (work), recording YT videos, and streaming. I don't care whether the mic is in the video while gaming/streaming. Just not during work video calls.

Given my workspace / keyboard, I was thinking dynamic was the way to go. 

So my question is: Are there any good USB dynamic mics (or really any type of mic) that will work from 1-2 feet away? 

I was thinking to either put the mic next to my camera on top of my monitor or on the desk between me and the keyboard where it's not in view of the camera.

I also heard that a Shotgun, Super Cardioid, Boom mic might work, but that both are hit or miss, especially at my price point (~$100) and when using indoors/not in an audio room.

Got a budget of ~$100. I could potentially stretch it a bit if it's a good value.

Might be looking for the unicorn of microphones: a USB dynamic mic that I can position off-camera (1-2 ft away). $100-ish budget

Rode has always had quality products. The microphone sounds great! I like the filter options and with my camera (Canon SL3) the mic turns on automatically so that's a bonus. The noise floor is greatly increased when adjusting the gain on the microphone but is easily fixable if you adjust your cameras settings. I would've given the mic a 5 star but the one thing that held me back was the 3

Well, were any of those totally offensive? Probably not, right? As a content creator, I want my videos to be enjoyable on all levels. I want the video quality to look good

 More on that shortly. The point of this video isn't to bash the NTG, it's a high quality microphone and it has a lot of really cool features that other videos talk about in depth. But the reality is I don't need any of those features. All I want is for my voice to sound better for these videos

 I just hear people talking about how important audio is so I figured I should step up my game. I recently bought an XLR pencil condenser mic which I compared to this mic in a recent video. And while the quality was nice, I also had to purchase an audio interface, then record that audio into my laptop, then sync the audio in post. That got old fast
