 Great ski for that sort of advancing intermediate to upper intermediate level. Great confidence builder, super into the turn, great edge grip. So somebody that wants to sort of progress in from on-piece to then experiencing sort of softer snow conditions, this width is perfect and a real confidence booster, but in softer snow conditions, you know spring conditions, the slight increase in width will give you that real sort of elevation out of the slushy sort of more softer snow, but absolutely great ski. So the EXP 82 is definitely pitched at that sort of good intermediate to upper intermediate level skier, can be skied a little bit above that, but because of its sort of forgiveness, but also that progression, great confidence builder

Rossignol Experience 82 Basalt Skis - Colin's Expert Review ...

I'm going to be biased and strongly recommend the intermediate Rossi's as they're much more available (I believe). Rossi focuses more on a wide selection of intermediate skis while nordica has an awesome collection of high end expert skies. The 82 Basalt or 80 Carbon are excellent intermediate skis that are pretty similar to the navigator 80 that you were looking at except might be a little.

Any insight into what happened with [skis.com](https://skis.com)?  I've had plenty of successful experiences there and ordered Navigator 80s there in September, since the local shop doesn't carry them.  The ship date kept getting pushed back every week and today I get this email:

 You know, definitely kind of blurs that line between frontside and all mountain. These Experience skis have all undergone a pretty significant change for this year and much to the delight of, you know, most of that intermediate level skier that's going to get the most out of this ski. Definitely blurs that line, you know, 82 millimeters underfoot just by its number alone should be in the all mountain range, but with a little bit more of a frontside shape and construction to it. So we start with a lightweight Pallonia wood core and add in Basalt fiber

 We see a lot of use of Basalt in cross-country skis as well. So it's a very efficient material for making something strong and smooth but without a lot of weight. So that factors through in this Experience 82 really nicely. In the tips here we have these fibers that lead into a rubber plate here so that those fibers kind of harness any of the bad vibrations and then they hit that rubber plate and just go away

 So a nice positive camber underfoot, you know, it's a pretty simple construction to the ski so they build energy into it by putting more of that camber underfoot, kind of building that latent energy in here, allowing you to access it, getting the rebound out of the tail of the ski. The rocker and the tip lines up really well with where that half-sidewall ends, so right about here, and then a nice gradual curve to it as well. So a 4-in-82, you know, this has a fair amount of rocker in the shovel, you know, and that adds to that ability to initiate and enter the turn well as well as helping you stay on top of any fresh snow you might encounter or even at the end of the day when the trails get cut up, this allows you to kind of float and drift over that easily. A little bit more business-like in the tail, you know, that rocker again lines up with where the half-sidewall ends, pretty low, pretty minimal splay, but a good length for this shape ski, so that's going to give you good and easy exit to the turn, but that taper shape is very minimal

Don't overlook the new Rossignol's this year. Excellent redesign this year that is more groomer focused then many all-mountain skis (without being a dedicated piste ski). For an intermediate both the 86 Basalt and the 82 Basalt would be a great fit for learning to carve on blues while handling some powder and varied terrain.

I am going to finally buy skis. 48m, 5'10", 195lbs.  I typically ski blue groomers out west. I've never skied a black diamond(on purpose) and sometimes have a little trouble on steep blues.  I am looking for skis that offer good stability, easy turning and are somewhat forgiving. I am still working on graceful smooth looking turns. I'll most likely ski in Steamboat and Mammoth this year. But I have an Icon pass so hopefully I'll get to a few more places. What are some good skis to consider?  Thanks for the help.

Ski recommendations for a mediocre intermediate skier?

 You have camber underfoot with an extended side cut, so long effective edge. You also have what Rossignol calls a drive tip solution, which just blends directional fibers into the tips and really just allows you to press into the forebody of the ski and really just kind of get into that turn really easily. Really drive the tip and it just kind of pulls you directly into and smoothly into your turn. Looking at the tails, you get the square directional tail shape, so just a lot of stability, a lot of power from the tail really helps just to get you into your turn and release your turns as well

 So just effortless control, great edge grip, just all-around great performance ski that's approachable. I would say it's geared towards beginner to intermediate skiers who just want a little bit more out of a ski than the narrower option in the experienced lineup, but still a pretty approachable, not super demanding ski that's great on trail and on groomers, great carving ski, just a range of capabilities.  This is a step up from the Experience 80, which is the narrower, more approachable, more affordable option. The 82 obviously has a little bit more width, but not a ton. Still a women's frontside, all-mountain carving ski. Has a lightweight build with a really responsive flex and just a really great confidence building ski with effortless control and maneuverability

 If you're looking to have a bit more of a responsive, smooth, higher performance ski, but still just a really approachable confidence building one, this is a great option.  So that brings the energy into that rubber material and does away with those unwanted vibrations. So it's a really smooth entry point to the turn. And then that full sidewall really kicks in underfoot and through the tail, brings you into the, brings you out of that one turn into the next really easily, really cleanly. You know, that waist width, you know, when we're talking about getting kind of in that 80 millimeter range, we kind of move to that front side aspect, but, you know, just a little bit wider and with a more all mountain shape

 It's a carryover model from last year. Still the same great kind of narrow footprint all-mountain ski that a lot of people really enjoyed. You know, this is one of those ones that kind of snuck up on a lot of our testers. You know, the general thought is, well, if they make a TI version, then the Basalt version mustn't be nearly as good

 Built from a poplar wood core, we get basalt fiber. So it's interesting how Rossignol uses basalt. It's a very light and energetic set of stringers that they use. They use it a lot in their cross-country skis as kind of that stiffening agent, but it doesn't add much weight
