 Unbelievable float from this ski. I think that's given its size 118 underfoot. Given the rocker profile. Plenty of rocker in the tip

 But last week we got 52 inches and 48 hours at Stowe. And we had this ski, our Salomon rep dropped it off and we figured there's no better time than the present to put it to the test. So yeah, we've been skiing the Salomon QST 118 here. Really, really cool powder ski

 I think we hit it home last year when we did the 99 review. If you saw that video and saw the review, you probably took away that we liked it quite a lot. I think the 106, we haven't done a full review of the 106 yet, but I think that could be a great all mountain ski for somebody who wants a little bit more soft snow performance than the 99, but doesn't feel that they need a really rockered, pretty wide powder ski in their quiver. But yeah, that's the Salomon QST line

 It's not light. I wish I could communicate the weight of the ski better through the video. But basically this is a Salomon Guardian 16 Touring Binding. It's not the heaviest binding in the world, but it's certainly not the lightest

Hi friends,

I'm looking for some advice on a new (or new to me) pair of skis.

Background: I've been skiing all my life, mostly in Europe or the East Coast on groomers and powder and some off piste stuff where I grew up but for cost reasons and limited days per season, I've never owned my own skis. I've had plenty of boots over the years and just fell in love with some new Lange LX130's for this season.

Fast forward to December 2021 and I just moved to Salt Lake City and hope to do 25-30 days a season. The move was hectic and a bit unexpected so my wife and I decided to just do a season rental this year and reassess in the summer when prices might be a bit lower. After 1/2 a day on the mountain I didn't care for the skis I rented ( beat to hell Atomic Vantage 83's) and now I'm looking online for a used pair with a little more substance to them. 

I came across a great deal second hand for some Salomon QST 118's ... Do you all think that is too much ski? I love powder but I also love groomers especially since I'm teaching my wife to ski (shes killing it!). What do you all think?

New Ski Advice

 So after you shred the back bowl, hit the groomer to get back to the lift around the mountain, this ski is going to be a blast the whole way A to B. QST 118, 118 underfoot, this is the 185 I have here, the 192 is what Cody Townsend shreds and they are the top dog skis in the new QST range for 2017.

 Pro skiers, intermediates get on this ski and have a blast. The reason is it's light, it's stable, it's fun, lively, it's doing everything you want it to. At 118 underfoot, this is the most capable powder ski ever made. It absolutely rips groomers

For the past 8 years I have been doing season ski rentals. Three years ago I had the Head Kore skis and they were fine. Two years ago my demo rental ended up being the 180cm Rossi Sky 7s, and I felt more comfortable on skis than ever before. I went into my local shop extra early this year to ensure I got the Sky 7s again. In two years I went from being able to make it a couple hundred yards through the trees without falling to ripping tree runs at ease and dropping 15 foot or less clifs with a mild success rate. 

This upcoming winter I’m moving to Vail and for my birthday my mom is gifting me my very first setup. A lot of people have told me that the Rossi line is too weak and will break over the course of a season as a local, and a lot of people have told me I need more ski under my foot than the Sky 7 offers. As for the first bit of advice, I kind of plan to ignore that because like I said in 8 years of demo ski rentals I have never once felt more comfortable on a ski. But the second bit of advice has constantly been in my mind as I struggle to keep up with my friends on powder days. So I’ve turned my focus to the thicker Soul 7s and am pretty much obsessed, and am currently sitting on a website with a pair of 188cm Soul 7s in my cart. 

I’m six foot two inch and 230 pounds and consider myself an advanced skier at this point. Does the Soul 7 sound like a good idea? Should I stick with a Sky 7? Is 188 too long? Do you have any other advice?

Question about the Rossignol Sky and Soul 7s

 Hi skiers, it's Bob, SkiEssentials.com and welcome to our 2021 ski test. Here is the Salomon QST 118. This is the type of ski that if you get it on the right day in the right conditions you're about as happy as you could possibly be

 But yeah, that's it, the shape and the profile of this ski really set it apart from these other high waist width models out there. And so when Salomon does that, they're kind of making a statement that this ski is different because of this built in rocker and it really makes a huge difference, gives the ski a nice rounded feel in the turn, makes that straight 26 meter radius able to be manipulated and that's what's fun about skiing in powder is that you're able to make all sorts of the different turn shapes and styles and not feel anything at all.  Still some positive camber underfoot, but that tail rocker is built in just beautifully and for a ski without a twin tip to have that amount of rocker back there means that you are in control over the exit of the turn and that means more fun. Same thing with the tip, just surfy, surfy, very, very low profile, minimal splay on that tip there and that's going to keep you right on top, very, very floaty. Not just the shape of the ski, but also the profile and how that thing is built, but pretty simple wood core with the Salomon CFX, got carbon and flax in there to stiffen and add to the strength. But generally when you're talking about skiing in soft snow like this, a softer flexing ski tends to be more fun and this thing does have a pretty nice even flex to it and that's just going to stay on top of snow, it's going to ride right through crud, right over everything

 The big thing about this thing is obviously the shape. So 118 underfoot, that's just about as wide as it gets, 142 in the tip and 129 in the tail. Pretty straight cut to this ski. This is the 185 and it generates a 26 meter turn radius, so very straight on the turns

I’ve been using Atomic Vantage 85 for the last few seasons since I was just learning. However, I have been considering getting new skis (not that it’s necessary). Where I ski we get quite a bit of snow so I was wondering what size of ski would work best? I was thinking 100 (+5 or -5) would be a good width underfoot in order to do well in powder but not be too bulky for the rest of the hill. What sizes and more importantly what skis would you recommend? Thanks!

Does anyone know good skis for in-resort but off-piste skiing?

 So when you're skiing in the deep, big mountains, that's very key, very nice. You mentioned kind of a lightweight profile, and another thing that I think we should talk about is the binding that was set on this ski when the powder union was testing it up at Powder Week. They were skiing on the shift binding, which is our binding of the year this year. It's a totally brand new binding that everybody's talking about, can't wait to test out

 First of all, it has a very healthy rocker tip in the tail. The surface area, if you look at it flat, is quite short. So you may want to ski this ski a little bit longer than you would normally, but what that nice rocker profile does is it allows you to really pivot your turns. You can dump speed on a dime, and that really helps when you're skiing steep and deep in the trees

 Can you talk a little bit about how that binding might have affected the performance of a ski that is 118 underfoot, a bigger ski, but as you mentioned, still a lightweight profile. So the shift is a new binding, it's kind of all the rage, everybody's talking about it, they're selling out. It's pretty much the gear of the year, it's the product of the year for skiing. That's what I did when I bought my most recent pair. Did a ton of research on the size I wanted and rented a few different options. My resort had a performance rental option where you could exchange the skis during the day for something else. I started skiing on gifted Head skis and switch to Salomon QST's last year

I’ve only skiied greens at Liberty Mountain (PA) with my gf who has skiied all her life. I’d like to go to Snowshoe with her this season a couple times as well as get on some blues at Liberty. I don’t need to “pizza”, but I’m still working on getting better at turns esp as the speed increases. 

I’m 5’11, 215lbs. 

I rented last season but just wanna go buy a pair for this season. Boots also. 

Any recs?

I used a pair of 168cm Fischer RC One 77 XTR’s last year.

[Feb 18, 2022] Weekly Discussion: Ask your gear, travel, conditions and other ski-related questions

So I’ve been skiing for about 5 years now, did 2 weekends in a shitty resort, 2 weeks in a good resort and 5 months indoor ski hall. Have had approximately 10 days of lessons in total throughout the years, and can now ski parallel, decently fast and feeling like I can take on a bit more. I bought a set of rossignol attraxions a couple years ago, they’re still in good shape since I had them serviced whenever they needed. My gf has a pair of atomic cloud 10’s and I’m currently skiing on indoor snow on her skis because I feel it’s more stable and I can make sharper yet smoother turns on them. I have salomon boots, fitted to my feet, they normally fit like a glove, so they don’t have to be swapped, but am I right in thinking I could do with a new set of skis or am I just imagining things?
