It's a premium, lightweight, and propulsive racing shoe. Those aren't really characteristics I'm looking for in a winter shoe because I'm not looking to go fast; my feet feel heavy as shit when cold so the low weight is mostly nullified, and having a high energy return and relatively squishy midsole (for Salomon) feels a little pointless because the snow decreases toe-off propulsion and softens impacts already, and having a squishy midsole on uncertain footing is counterproductive. SDJ's review of the Pulsar was glowing for a race shoe, but he mentioned that the midsole ride was already starting to deteriorate within 50mi, and the RTR review mentions that there's visible outsole wear within 25mi so it's clear that Salomon is using much less durable materials than their normal shoes here. Personally, I've been fine on packed and up to 5cm of loose snow in road shoes with aggressive outsoles (for a road shoe) like the Reebok Symmetros so I've not pulled the trigger on a trail shoe for winter yet, and if I do I'd definitely lean toward something with slightly more aggressive lugs, a less breathable upper, and a lot more durability (maybe the Sense Ride 4 GTX?
