I wanted a fast SSD drive to replace the slow, potentially error-prone HDD drive I was using for Time Machine backups of my Macbook Pro. This Samsung model was highly rated, so I went with it despite reading some negative comments about the software. In my case, the software proved to be unusable since it could never detect that the drive was plugged into and available. I kept fiddling and then erased and re-downloaded the Samsung SSD software but still it never recognized that the drive was available/plugged in

 Might come in handy as a hand warmer in winter...  In the end I just deleted the Samsung software and used Disk Utility to erase and re-format the drive to APFS (Encrypted) and placed a password on the drive

2 Gen 2 ports. Still, the Samsung is 2-3X faster than my old HDD and presumably more secure from failure, so I can live with it.  Amazon lowered the price for this drive days after I ordered it, which is annoying. Monitor the price and time your purchases carefully!

 All three perform the same showing approx. 44/34 MB/s respectively using Samsung Magic software tool. Interesting tidbit was that this morning I wanted to copy over the latest Rocky Linux v9.0 ISO to the drive, and amazingly it hit >850MB/s transfer for almost half the file, then Win10 throttled it back to

  I am still checking motherboard settings and will test on two additional computers, all with Windows 10 64-bit. If I find a solution and get the r/w speeds up to where they should be, I'll change my review.  So far, I have not heard back from Samsung support on this issue.  16 Jul 2022: I've been able to reproduce the performance issue on 3 computer systems, two workstations with Win10 Pro 21H2, and one workstation with Win10 Enterprise 21H2

I love the concept of a portable drive and expected the Red T7 to perform as advertised, as all my other Samsung SSD drives perform. My disappointment occurred when seeing repeated read/write speeds both around 44/34 MB/s respectively using Samsung Magic software tool and also seen when writing files to SSD.  I am still checking motherboard settings and will test on two additional computers, all with Windows 10 64-bit. If I find a solution and get the r/w speeds up to where they should be, I'll change my review

bought a new t7 portable drive & wanted to update the firmware as i always do w/ the t5's i have. but magician & the portable software both say no firmware & not any to install available. i followed the instructions in the samsung guide but am very disappointed that i cannot get the full speed from the t7, i actually get speed slower than the t5's that i have been using.

 So far, so good.  However, when I then connected the T7 drive to my iPad, I was shocked to see no files visible on the T7 in the FILES application. And no clear way to enter the password to access the drive when connected to the iPad.  Cut a long story short, Samsung Tech Support eventually confimed that iPad is NOT supported by the T7 and they do NOT have an iPadOS app available to access a secured T7 drive

You will know that buying an iPad Pro with significant storage gets expensive very quickly. For example, the base 11” iPad Pro comes with 128Gb of storage for $799. Buy the 1Tb model and the cost increases by $700 to $1,499.  So it made sense to take advantage of the fast USB-C (Thunderbolt) port on the iPad Pro and buy the $115 1Tb Samsung T7 SSD to use as external storage with my newly-acquired M1 iPad Pro (and M1 Macbook Air

)  I have not noticed any real heat issue myself yet when the T7 is connected to the Macbook Air. But I do want to draw your attention to a security issue with the T7 when used with iPads…  The T7 comes pre-loaded with a Security application for Mac computers. After a somewhat fiddly exercise - involving modifying the Macbook Air security settings to enable kernel extensions - I was able to get the Samsung security software working, so that a password was required when connecting it to the Macbook Air. I transferred some files onto the T7 as a test and then ejected the drive from the Macbook Air

Fast, portable drive but with a security caveat…

  For the price, you get a high-speed drive plus data protection.  Other comparable devices cost about the same but don't offer the data security that the T7 does.  Speedwise, short data transfers are amazingly fast on the T7.  In fact, it blows the T5 model out of the water

  These two downsides are the only negative to an otherwise almost perfect USB drive.  If Samsung could figure out a way to build the password protection into the hardware of the device, bypassing the software unlocking, it would be perfect.  Samsung offers the same drive with a fingerprint reader that is hardware-based and does unlock the drive without the need for the software (other than initial device setup).   In any event, the non-touch version of the T7 is excellent if you only plan to use the drive on computers that you own

  It is swift (10Gbps), assuming you have a compatible USB 3.2 port. It is roughly the size of a credit card and fits almost anywhere!  It features password security that encrypts the drive and keeps the contents safe, so it is perfect if you have sensitive or confidential data, or work in an environment where data must be protected.  I work in the government healthcare field, so this drive is a must
