Hi, my iMac has 32gig ram and a 2tb fusion drive.

Debating an external ssd drive for things like Steam and VMs. Not brave enough to slice my iMac open!!

Im unsure if its worth just getting a usb ssd drive with a usb 3.1 gen 2 interface or buying an enclosure and nvme drive as separates. 

Any thoughts please?

Usb ssd drive or usb enclosure for nvme ssd on 18.3 iMac?

  This drive only works with a thunderbolt port. It does not work with a USB port. This means it is reliant on the Thunderbolt port. The problem is that your laptop thunderbolt port needs software to work

I have a 2017 27 inch 5K iMac and the fusion drive is painfully slow. 
I don’t want to open it to replace the fusion drive with an internal ssd because I’m afraid of broken it. 
So I wonder if I can just put everything into a external SSD, leave it connected to the iMac and stop using the fusion drive. 
Will this work and speed up my iMac ?

Replacing slow fusion drive with external SSD

 The X5 did not come anywhere close to the promised 2800 write speed, but I can definitely say it's much faster than the T5 I own and my old hard drive. For kicks, I copied a 5GB file, planet of the apes to itself and that took literally 5 seconds. INSANE!  I do want to say that the read speeds arent impressive. Copying(reading) that same file to my desktop from the X5, oddly only netted me 9mbs, and would occasionally spike up to over 100mbs

I recently purchased the Samsung T5 - 1TB model and by no means is it a bad drive, but I had been reading reviews on the Samsung X5 and wanted to see if it is as fast as people say.  The X5 comes in a nice compact box, and as you can see, is barely bigger than the T5 and fits in my hand easily.  To test the speed of this drive, I did not use any synthetic benchmark testing, as I feel those do not represent real world performance. The laptop in use has the following specifications:  Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9370 (2018 model) RAM: 16GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 Storage: 512GB M

I did the same test on several same sized SSD drives and the SAN disk 2000 preformed the best at 33 minutes 46 seconds or 988MB/s. This drive cost half the price of the X5 and only gets warm

The product does not perform to specifications and is therefore well overpriced. Do not buy!!!. It runs extremely hot. It is not fast

 It runs extremely hot. It is not fast. On Black Magic 5GB test on my 2019 MBP it rated 1966/2497MB/s so close to 2800MB/s as quoted. It can transfer 200GB in 2 minutes so 1880MB/s, but not continuously

 I did the same test on several same sized SSD drives and the SAN disk 2000 preformed the best at 33 minutes 46 seconds or 988MB/s. This drive cost half the price of the X5 and only gets warm. It ran constantly at around 200GB every 4 minutes. The Samsung T7 was the worst at 170 minutes or 196MB/s

SAMSUNG X5 a waste of money

This drive is faster than the built-in ssd in my 2017 macbook pro. The software is a little clunky and caused the system to hang multiple times, but I didn't need the hardware encryption, so I just leave it "natural" and it just works! I didn't buy it for the encryption, so for me this is the best option on the market for thunderbolt 3 blazing fast ssd speeds! If you are looking for hardward encryption, look elsewhere (at least for mac), or wait until they hopefully fix it down the road.

Fast, but software for hardware encryption flaky

This thing cant cool the nvme drive inside well enough and sustained writes suffer because of that. At first itll write over 2000 but then after 10 seconds that falls to under 800. Reads are always super fast around 2300. When i first bought it, the writes could go longer before slowing down but nowadays i have come to expect the drop in write performance

 My other TB3 drives tested individually and dont display such a hit because they have much better cooling.
