 So let's go ahead and just run you through the basic you know setup of this water filter. It's not, you know, super crazy in the sense of what you what it's offering, but it is a fantastic performer. Sometimes the simplest easiest concepts work the best and that I believe is true here with this. Sawyer Now the first thing is that empty

This filter doesn't kill viruses on it's own. You have to buy another filter to kill viruses even though the box cover on the front says that it does, it says on the back that it doesn't. If you read all the writing on the box, then you will see that the box is misleading and now I'm not sure if I am going to keep it.

 But they're basically rated for the same type of thing which is all bacteria and protozoa that you're going to find in water sources, which is usually what you'll find in most backcountry and hiking scenarios here in North America. So for what I do and the majority of the water that I'll ever encounter in my life unless I am traveling overseas, these are awesome. And on top of that, they will do a hundred thousand gallons before you need to replace them, which is basically a lifetime's worth of water. Almost so the price point, which is mini with a one or two little bags that'll go for about 20

 Now for me, the main drawback with this design is that it's just kind of cumbersome. There are multiple parts that you got to deal with, and you got to camp out near your water source for several minutes to really filter what you need. It's not fun to kind of, you know, drink and then try and put in your pack and then drink again later. You know it's better to have a separate bottle and then pour it in and you got to take a little bit of time

 And so that's where the grail and the Grail system comes in to play. Now what's different about this is that it works like a plunge system. think of like a French press where you take your bottle, you scoop up your dirty water from whatever dirty water source you may desire. so you have your dirty water, then you just put the plunger filter being at the bottom and you depress, and after about 15 seconds, you'll have 16 ounces of purified water and it will not only do bacteria and protozoa, but also viruses

 So let's go ahead and get to it. So first let's look at the Sawyer Mini. They have many different sizes now. I think they have a micro and they have a larger size and they all just have capabilities in how much they'll be able to filter and flow rates

 That being said it still is slower than drinking out of a cup or a glass so if that's how you prefer to drink then I would recommend Sawyer's bag type filters systems so you can just filter the water into a cup or Nalgene bottle. This filter however is very convenient for every day use. Just pour water from the sink, fountain, or from the glass at the restaurant and I have immediately filtered water as I drink. No having to worry about a two handed operation of a bag and filter to pour into a separate container

 So yeah, the one litre for me. but essentially what they've done, they've put a mini filter just like the one that we we had a look at before it's in line. They're up to a tube so it's really straightforward to use. You're basically just gonna get to your water source

Okay, little while ago I looked at the Sawyer mini filter and today I've got here the new product from Sawyer This is the one liter bottle filter and it comes in two varieties, the 750 and the one litre. I've gone for the bigger option off foreign that the year the way I drink what? I go through the 750 bit fast. So yeah, the one litre for me. but essentially what they've done, they've put a mini filter just like the one that we we had a look at before it's in line

 If you look at, say something like our life straw you've got to get down on your hands and knees and drink directly from the water source. And and then if you live the water source, you kind of stuck with this. You can top-up get hydrated, and then take some water to go with you. For those guys that have been shying away from bladders because they've leaked in their bag or ruptured or something like that and you've lost your water, a hardbody bottle is it is a good solution

. Being too hard to squeeze is bad, all-around. Drinking from the bottle takes some effort, and drinking from the straw has a nasty plastic taste for quite a while. It also doesn't have a prefilter on the tubing, so you should add one yourself (or use a coffee filter or handkerchief) or only use this with crystal-clear water

Besides, viral contamination of water is extremely rare in USA/Canada, where we don't have raw sewage dumped into our rivers and ponds. . I mean SO close. Fractional change in diameter or pitch of thread would give you a water tight seal. Why not make the change and give your customers a more flexible product?  Ok, with all that out of the way, I still give this 4 stars, because it is still one of the best filter bottles I've tried

You only need to work ever so slightly harder to suck the water through this filter than out of any normal straw

A great product in need of some minor tweaks

 I read extensive reviews and researched long and hard to find the right bottle for my trip. I really don't want to be spending $20+ per day on bottled water that may still be questionable, so I've decided to go with filtering my own water.  To play it safe for my trip, I've also decided to buy a SteriPEN to add an extra layer of purification. My trip to Africa is for business and I CANNOT run the risk of getting sick while I'm there

 The Carbon Element simply helps to collect chemicals and other items in the water that make the water taste bad.  I will update this review upon my return or during my trip.

  To play it safe for my trip, I've also decided to buy a SteriPEN to add an extra layer of purification. My trip to Africa is for business and I CANNOT run the risk of getting sick while I'm there.  In my tests of this bottle at home filtering out my regular tap water, I noticed that the filtered water comes out tasting pretty much the same. I does not remove the metallic "tappy" taste of the water in my opinion
