OK, the Dad Band added an analog mixer (Mackie 1604) and everyone is amazed at how much better we sound.  Or, perhaps, how much better we can hear how we sound perhaps. Lots of great advice from the folks here that I plan to convert into a digital mixer someday soon...

Last night, however, one of our microphones died and we are considering replacing the current mishmash of two Shure PG 48s, an "Audio Technica" of uncertain vintage, and (seriously) a Realistic with a set of four semi-decent microphones.  If we have a strong suit it's our vocals as we have three people who know how to and can sing harmonies.

We liked the Shure mics and are looking at four Shure PGA48-XLR Cardioids at $45 a piece.

Is there a better microphone in the same price range?  We could go up to \~$100 a pop - is there something significantly better in that range?  Is there a type of microphone that helps reduce feedback (a narrower pattern, for instance)? Am I dreaming?

Microphones

I have not heard a better sounding handheld, dynamic microphone. I have heard several that may sound just as good, some of which are much less expensive, but I can't say I've heard a better sounding one.

Comparing it to other dynamic vocal mics, I appreciate the e945 as quite possibly the best of them. I felt it was better than the Telefunken M80, the Beyerdynamic TG-V70D, and several Audix models, as well as the SM58. However, I am a lot more doubtful the e945 has anything worth the much greater price. Comparing careful recordings using studio-quality headphones, I could just barely perceive a difference in sound qualities compared to good microphones costing 1/3rd the price

I wasn't really able to identify anything that would convince me it is certainly worth three times as much money as an alternative. Many of the differences I did perceive could have been due to small changes in the gain, distance and proximity effect that I couldn't perfectly compensate for

Sennheiser EW 500 G4 is what you want. Also, I suggest to go with E945 or E935 capsule - that will be an upgrade on your SM58.

I’m an artist who was recently offered an artist deal with sennheiser so I’m looking to grab 1 or 2 wireless mics.

- I need something very flexible as my headline shows are in the 200-500cap range, but I also am involved in a lot of festivals with larger stages and I’m going on a support tour this spring doing 2-3,000 cap theaters. 

- I have a lot of experience with G3 IEM packs (frequency scanning, setting up, etc) so the G4 wireless mic system is attractive to me just off of familiarity.

- have heard a lot of talk about digital vs. analog systems but don’t really understand the difference. EW-D seems nice but I don’t really know the benefits versus g4.

- also curious if EW-DX would be worth the extra cost. I don’t have experience with Dante or WSM so I’m not sure if I’d even get the most out of that mic.

Also another note I’m coming off of a wired shure sm58 so I’m thinking e835 would be the most similar capsule? Thanks for reading this far if you made it.

Looking for advice on sennheiser wireless mic systems.

 Not the round shaped tape you would find on the outside of a brand new box. Of course this could just be the way the manufacturer is taping their box on closed. In any case, I’m returning it because of the poor sound quality.

Sounds bad - poorly package

 Now I'm typing on a keyboard with Cherry MX Blues to see how much of my voice first how much of the keyboard it picks up. Now I'm right on top of the E945 to show you how this does with the proximity effect. We of course do got to test the plosives, so please bring pizza pronto, please bring pizza pronto, and please bring pizza pronto. When I buy a new mic, I can't wait to test it out, cause I need to know if I'll still sound like s**t

Looking for a change from the SM58

 This mic is true to my own voice. It’s very well balanced between low-mid-high vocal registers. By comparison, before this mic I used a variety of Shure mics, a Heil mic, Samsung and some other lesser brands.

Great mic especially if you’re looking to give your lower register some recognition
