 I'd call this almost an artistic choice on voice kind of gives you the sound of an old school am radio announcer where we don't have a lot of thickness in those low frequencies. And back to without any just so you can hear how drastic that difference is. Now I've been talking about how you can use this microphone in particular that bass control switch to help with bleed but just the pattern itself makes a big difference here. I'm going to go ahead and let you hear just how closely it rejects all the way around the mic

 This is an excellent microphone if you have less than ideal recording conditions it really focuses in on a tight area of pickup here. That said the other thing I notice is there's a lot of clarity with this microphone. For a dynamic mic we're certainly getting a fairly crisp sound in that upper range. Now it is boosted a little bit in that kind of 2 to 5k range and then it actually rolls off a little bit after that

 It's a cardioid pattern here. Now I have it about three inches away from my mouth slightly off axis to help out with plosives because if I'm right into it people people because because you can really hear it picks that up. Now it doesn't come with a pop filter but all you have to do is grab one. Here's one from an AT2020 and slide that right on there people people because because and you see that cleans that up right away

 Plus this mic has a five position twin stage high pass filter. We've got a lot to do let's get right to it. Now I want to start out by talking about working distance. This is a dynamic microphone so you're expected to kind of be in a closer range

What is your go-to kick mic for both budget AND quality?

Really nice mic, but has some sharp highs.

 You know I don't like I say I don't really like bashing into microphone companies but they really do need to sort that one out. Anyway look these things in Australia here these retailers are about anywhere between four or five hundred bucks somewhere around there actually I think they retail for six hundred but I don't think I've ever known anyone to pay that so you can generally get them somewhere between four hundred and five hundred five hundred fifty bucks or something like that. Hunt around you know there's places all over the joint that have got these. Should you buy one yes you should a hundred percent you should buy one hopefully someone invents a better version of this clip

 Yes they're very very good microphones they're very they're very sturdy actually so I mean I suppose for that clip they can drop you don't want them to drop but you know they obviously build them sturdy enough to drop because they someone forgot to build the clip. Anyway I shouldn't bash on too much about the clip. Yes you should buy one of these things they're really really good they're very versatile they're very unique and they give you a lot of options in a studio and for four to five hundred dollars you definitely should have them it's why my studios have half a dozen of these things in the studio. Take it or leave it if you want to buy one of these things I would recommend you to have one if you want to get into studios or you want to add a good microphone at a relatively you know not not expensive price in your home studio or wherever you set up definitely put one of these in your mic locker they're really really good

Looking for a kick mic and overhead for simple drum recording setup

Good, but expansive.

 So today we are looking at this guy, the Sennheiser MD421-2 and if you do want to pick up this microphone it'll set you back around $380 like always, I'll throw some links down below and for this review I have the microphone connected directly to the 2i2 second gen, my input gain is set at about 4 o'clock, not going to do any post processing but I made boosted in post so check the doobly-doo to see what I diddly-did. Now let's talk about what comes in the box, everything comes in this plastic storage box, you will obviously get the microphone, you get the microphone clip, you get a 5 eighths to 3 eighths inch microphone stand adapter and you get some documentation. When it comes to the build quality I have absolutely zero concerns about this thing and that's partially because this is an industry standard microphone for toms and if you are going to be miking up a drum kit you sure as hell better think that it's going to be built really well. Now one thing I was surprised by was the fact that this microphone has an all plastic body but it does feel like a very sturdy build still

 I found that if you have the high pass filter off and you're 3 to 5 inches away from the mic you can get a very smooth sound that has a full low end and a lot of detail and clarity up top without sounding brittle. And lastly for spoken word I know I sound like a broken record but the mic has a lot of detail especially compared to other dynamic microphones and it has a really full and pleasing body to it. I do want to point out though that I think the higher boost to this microphone is on the verge of sounding over boosted and a little bit unnatural. So I think it's really important to stay fairly close to this microphone to kind of offset that big boost to the presence treble and air frequencies

 About one foot away from the microphone, two feet away from the microphone and about four feet away from the microphone. Of course we do got to test the plosives so please bring pizza pronto. Please bring pizza pronto. Please bring pizza pronto

I have a pair of those, built like tanks (not the turret tossing variety) and are omnidirectional. I have used them on drum overhead and once to capture a choir in stereo. It sounded fine.

Sennheiser MD21 recording live or in the studio. Have you used it and then for what?

  For voicover or singing work you will need to manage plosives with pop filters or application of compressors. It has a great articulate quality for voice with the emphasis on the upper mid-range frequency response. Once managed it performs very well across many types of voices. I have a lot of low frequency energy in my voice and run these at the mid-point selection of the high pass filter selector
