I just bought an Ugly Stik Elite. I have wanted to get a good ultralight rod since I fished on an old crappy one and had a blast reeling in juvenile salmon and a gorgeous Cutty. I have to say I am very happy with the rod so far, I have not yet had a chance to test it out, but the build quality feels excellent for the price, and it looks very smart. I paired it with an old 2500 Sienna, but I may go smaller in the future when I am not a broke boy

 But the thing is you need a fairly large sinker to get to the bottom in the sound thanks to our currents. Since I would be on a boat, there wouldn't be much casting involved. What is the largest weight I could safely put on my rod without snapping it?

 You get what you pay for with this but I will say the cork butt and grip feels very good. Honestly the only reason I’m keeping it without complaints

About what you’d expect

My son (15) is starting to get into fishing thanks to some friends of his. Currently, he’s borrowing rods from his friends when he goes, but that’s not a long term solution. 

Looking for recommendations on a rod and reel setup for him that’ll let him fish for a few things (he’s mentioned blue gills, and occasionally trying for trout) without going overboard for a beginner. 

Don’t want to break the bank on something for him, but also don’t want a $15 setup that’ll break on its second use. I know nothing about fishing, so welcoming any and all recommendations.

Rod and reel recommendations

Not same Quality

I have the BPS graphite rod in 7'MH paired with a Penn Battle III 3000 for fishing inshore with lighter lures and swimbaits. Not really a saltwater rod but it's been fantastic, can't beat it for $35.

Going through my new fishing gear on my day off pt.2

 However, that comes at a price.  The rod is pretty strong, and especially light. However it lacks sensitivity, and runs a bit heavy. My ultralight Ugly Stik Elite is more like a light, and my medium heavy is almost a heavy

 I returned the ultralight ugly stik, because sensitivity is key. The medium heavy ones I kept and am very happy with, because they are mostly for bottom fishing and for using some heavy lures.  That is why I say the Ugly Stik Elite should only be bought in Medium or Medium Heavy varieties, for bigger fish, where it is simply the best rod for the price range. Medium and Medium Heavy Ugly Stik elites can catch carp, catfish, big bass, pike, and musky

One of the best rods in the price range, but a few drawbacks.

Rod break not in middle, but plenty "twitchy"

 But, the rod should have been shipped in a tube, not in a seven foot long square box with no internal protection.
