The Teric from Shearwater Research of Canada is a full technical dive computer with recreational divers in mind. The Teric includes open-circuit and closed-circuit Air, Nitrox and Trimix multi-gas functionality along with a three-axis tilt-compensated digital compass. It has Recreational, Gauge, Freediving, Open-Circuit Tech and Closed-Circuit/Bail-Out modes. The Teric is also very configurable; for example you can set a button to give you a single press access to different tools like compass, stopwatch, countdown timer, etc. There are haptic (vibration) and audible alarms that can be disabled (none, either, both) to prevent annoying other divers in the vicinity. The Teric offers an information screen utilizing a {1.39 in | 35 mm} full color AMOLED display with a {Diameter x Height | 55mm x 18mm} body and {4.25 oz | 120.4 g} weight. The Teric can provide time-to-surface based on 'look ahead' at planned gas switches. Multiple gas definition presets are supported with any combination of oxygen, nitrogen and helium. The Teric will NOT "lockout" after a missed stop or ascent rate violation. After the dive, the Teric communicates via Bluetooth to connect with the Shearwater Cloud dive log manager, which is compatible with MS Windows, OS X, iOS and Android devices, supporting wireless log downloads and firmware updates. The Teric supports hoseless gas pressure integration, sometimes called air integration (AI). The Teric is capable of wirelessly connecting to either one or two optional transmitters giving the diver ability to monitor up to two tank pressures. It is also capable of calculating the Gas Time Remaining (GTR) on one assigned tank. Air integration is optional for all modes, from OC Rec to CC/BO. The tank pressure(s), in PSI or BAR, and GTR can be displayed to the customizable slots on the main display screen or accessed through the underlying information screens.

So my brother and I got our OW back in 2000. We’re on a sort of bucket list/mid-life crisis getting back in to finally get our AOW and… infinity and beyond.

In looking at gear, and having to even learn about dive computers… I’ve been drawn inexorably to the Teric. However, I just learned that the dive shop we’ll be using, the best around our county, no longer carries Shearwater, doesn’t recommend them, apparently hates the Teric, and told me they had a high failure rate and because they are a Canadian company impossible to get assistance and service. All of which flies in the face of several pages of Teric posts on this subreddit and every video I’ve seen on YouTube.

They say the instructors mostly use ScubaPro G2 and recommended Garmin MK2i as well as the “one that killed Teric”.

They said they don’t have a problem with people using Shearwater the instructors may not be able to assist with them though.

Help? Does this sound at all reasonable? Sour grapes? Bad luck with a bad batch? Early batch? Lost a license?

<p>Edit after answered: The low down was I had an issue with everyone here and on Youtube fawning over the Teric but a shop I was going to use doesn&#39;t recommend them. I&#39;ve gone with the Teric first thing waking up and reading all of your helpful encouragement. Thank you so much! We are hoping to get our AOW and eventually I at least would like to hit Dive Master and then see what&#39;s next after many many more dives. With something like SCUBA I wanted to get something I can grow into rather than replace my computer every time I need a new feature/learn a new skill. I also miss wearing watches and now I can use it as a talking point to drag other people under! haha</p>

<p>You guys are the best and I&#39;ll be sticking around hopefully to post about dives and maybe some photos!</p>

Being told not to get Teric

Top of the line dive computer

Looking to upgrade my dive computer. I'm currently have a Suunto Zoop that connects with a cable. I want something with Bluetooth connection and easy to use. I don't need air integration. I will be using NITROX. I'm not a technical diver. Prefer under $500.

I just got open water and nitrox certified. Which dive computer do you recommend for a beginner but which can  also be used for the long haul if I decide to get further certifications?

In your opinion, what is the best dive computer/ watch out there? Why?

Hi, I got a gift card to a local dive shop. I intended on using this for a dive but they are booked all summer, and I wont be able to go in the fall due to weather. I decided to probably spend it on gear instead. I have all the basics, mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, gloves. But I don't have anything else when it comes to scuba gear. What would be the first piece of more expensive gear that you think someone should invest in? I am kinda torn between a BCD or a dive computer.

I would go Shearwater over Garmin unless you REALLY want the smart watch features for something. I would get a Teric with AI and then a cheaper smartwatch, but I never wear a watch so I dive the Perdix 2 and a Teric. I stopped being an Apeks fan over the last couple of years. They have been sliding down the list for quality of product lately - I am all in on ScubaPro or Halcyon for regs these days

Getting my own gear

My wife and I just got our OW. We have a Bahamas trip planned in Sept which would be our first practical scuba trip other than our initial cert which was at a lake. We've been snorkeling several times in the Caribbean. Whenever I get into a new hobby, I tend to go "Full send" with new hobbies. Sometimes this works out great, others I dump a bunch of money into it and fizzlez out or don't use it enough, change my mind etc. 

We'll be rec divers hopefully going on 2 larger trips a year, with some smaller ones that we can drive to California, so between 25-50 dives a year. I've been lurking prior to our cert for gear etc and I think the first gear we should get would be our computers.

I tend to think very long term and love technology aspects so I'm all for buying once and being done, so I've been looking at the shearwater teric. I KNOW down the road I'll want AI, regardless if I get into any fancier diving or not. But that carries a hefty price tag, over the life of diving I'm sure it'll pay for itself, but I've also gathered that for my current diving expectations/needs it would be a bit overkill. 

So then I thought about the perigrine, fraction of the cost, no AI, but it could be a good starter for me, then upgrade down the road but, at the point I've just spent $500 on essentially a backup computer. 

So, now I'm inclined to just look for a basic no color screen, get me by type of watch so It can take out some of the mechanics of diving so we can enjoy the dive longer and have a better overall experience. This way it's a small upfront cost, we can still do our dives and have it as reference, then if we get more into the hobby etc upgrade and it can be our back up. Buttttt then again, I feel like if I do that I'll just be "settling" for a computer knowing that it's not really what I want.
