I found a matching shimano 600 set on ebay that was refurbished. I changed all brake and shifter cable sets. I upgraded the wheel set from a fly wheel to cassette and with the new shifters changed from 2x7 to 2x8. Rode 20 miles today and she did perfectly.

I also have wheels set up with 700x38mm slicks and 700x42mm knobbies for road and gravel riding. Thanks to this bike, I've pretty much stopped riding my road bike. I love that I can do everything with this from long road rides to loops in the local singletrack.

I had a loaner bike for a few months before getting my Vitus so I wasn’t a brand new rider... the loaner was a 2012 Raleigh Carbon frame with Shimano 105 group set and all Shimano wheels and accessories, so in the ball park of a modern $1000-2000 “entry level” bike. By comparison- The Vitus 979 is a fairly legendary frame, it was the original factory made “weight weenie” and truly top of the line for late 1980s tech with a mix of Shimano 600 and early Dura-ace components and hand built clincher wheels. Weight between the two bikes was almost identical, with the modern Raleigh being much more rigid and objectively “better” in measurable ways but the Vitus just FELT nice with the hand built wheels and slick shifting non indexed components. I had a decent baseline of riding performance on the Raleigh, and my first ride out with the Vitus for $300 I averaged a .5mph bump in speed with 7bpm lower heart rate... so definitely a slight bump in performance and that was with the old dry rotting vittoria training tires that started delaminating by the third ride!.

This is probably my favorite post I've seen on this sub so far!. **I'd say the Mondia** because the Shimano 600 groupset is slightly nicer than the components on the Pugeot. Though the pedals are a weird cleat design and you might need to replace them (worth holding onto them though in case you ever resell it).

LBSs will usually/sometimes specialize in one or two brands/companies (e.g. one of my LBSs mainly only sells Giant and Trek). The Shimano GRX groupset I believe is very similar to the 105 (both are used in new 2020 and 2021 gravel bikes) and what you’re getting there for the price and with a carbon frame set seems fair market price if that’s your price range.
