 I could pass this back and forth and it does not sound bad at all. I've tried some other hand held condenser microphones that were just garbage at handling noise. So it's really nice that this is good at it and it's a very big plus for people that want to use this for live vocals. The noise rejection was good, I thought that it was definitely better than your average condenser microphone

 I'm just saying it kind of combines the two worlds. You get better background noise rejection with this microphone, but you also get, you know, kind of a wider condenser sound. It's not as big sounding as like a true condenser, but you know, it's still really nice. So there are definitely some big benefits to handheld condenser microphones

 But let's go ahead and get mic'd. What's up audio nerds, welcome to the Audio Hotline, and as I said before, we're going to be reviewing the Beta 87A. Today I am using my Zoom H6 to record this episode. I have it set on about 58-59% gain somewhere in there

 Well now that we've gone through some of the basics of this microphone, we've gone through the specs, and we tested it out, let's go ahead and get to my opinion of this microphone. I'm gonna go ahead and talk about some of the pros and cons, and that's the thing though, is usually I'll be like, oh I'm gonna tell you some pros, then I'll end up accidentally saying some cons, and then I'll be like, let me tell you some cons, then I'll accidentally start telling you some pros. So I'm just gonna say, hey here's some pros and cons together. One of the biggest things that stood out to me about this microphone when I was testing it is how good it does with handling noise

Today, I have the  Shure Beta 87A in the Audio Hotline Studio! This is a Handheld Condenser microphone that is meant for live singing vocals... but as a lot of us know, just because a microphone is meant for something, doesn't mean it can't be awesome for other uses! I have always felt like podcasters, YouTubers, and other spoken word applications have looked past handheld Condenser mics as being a viable option. There are multiple Handheld Condensers that I have tried out that have been AMAZING options for spoken word, as well as great for singing and live vocals. So I was hoping that the Beta 87A would be another great option for multiple uses! I tell you MY OPINION at the end of this video. 

We all have different opinions on audio equipment, and we all have different expectations and uses... So be sure to check out the testing and audio samples and see if this is right for you!

 It has a great rise in presence. So it's tailored to vocals and very lightweight as well. So anyway, this is the Beta 87A from Shure, and my name is Mark Magditch.

 And I'm here today to talk to you about the Shure Beta 87A. One of my personal favorite microphones, being a vocalist for over 25 years, I ran into a situation where I needed to have a microphone that was going to give me a studio quality live and being used in a situation where I had two monitors where I didn't have to deal with a lot of feedback. This being a super-cardioid microphone, my being in a loud band, this lent itself to and got me the results that I wanted. This microphone also comes in a cardioid version

 And that cardioid version lends itself to those that are using in-ears for ambience. You'll see this microphone more recently used in a lot of big touring applications and live broadcast television shows such as award shows, the Grammys. And the reason that is is because of the sound of this microphone. It's impeccable

5 decibels, and a phantom power requirement of plus 11 to plus 52 volts. Now I'm spinning around the beta 87A to 90 degrees to show you the off axis rejection and coloration. We will go around to probably the deadest area on the microphone, it's how it sounds from here. Going around to the exact rear of the microphone, going to the other dead area in the microphone's polar pattern, going to the second 90 degree angle, and then rotating and ending at the front of the microphone

 Greetings, Earthlings. Today we're looking at a supercardioid handheld condenser microphone, what? So today we are reviewing this guy, the Shure Beta 87A, which as I mentioned is a supercardioid handheld electric condenser microphone. If you do want to pick this guy up, it will set you back around $250 like always, links down below. And for this review, I got the mic connected directly to the 2i2 second gen, 48 volts on and my gain set at around 3 o'clock

 Seriously, I feel like crap, can't even say crap right. My god, it's a condenser microphone that you can use on the stage. First up in terms of pros, this microphone did incredible at handling noise rejection, and also did a very good job at background noise rejection, and also the roll off to the bass is really beneficial if the talent that you're micing or if you don't have the best microphone technique. But then in terms of cons, this microphone has a surprisingly low output for a condenser microphone, and the high self noise of 23

 First up in terms of pros, this microphone did incredible at handling noise rejection, and also did a very good job at background noise rejection, and also the roll off to the bass is really beneficial if the talent that you're micing or if you don't have the best microphone technique. But then in terms of cons, this microphone has a surprisingly low output for a condenser microphone, and the high self noise of 23.5 decibels almost removes it completely from the possibility of studio use. That's just way too high

Today we look at the Shure Beta 87a, a Supercardioid, Handheld, Condenser microphone. This mic did an incredible job at handling noise rejection, a very respectable job at background noise rejection, and it offers plenty of clarity and detail if you’re looking for that condenser tone on stage. However, the self noise is nearly 24dB, and that is just far too high for studio use, so in my opinion, this is limited to a stage microphone.

 Now as the mic moves away from your mouth, the sound picked up is more natural. And those se sounds, those decrease. While moving to a distance of 3 feet away, sound gets really thinned out and you start to hear more of the ambient noise. Now the general rules for microphone use apply here, but pay extra attention to mic placement in respect to unwanted sources

 Keep in mind that mic placement always affects tone quality. In this case, the distance of your mouth away from the Beta 87A. For instance, when your mouth is less than 6 inches away from the mic, expect to hear a very robust sound with more bass. This also maximizes isolation from other sound sources

 While moving to a distance of 3 feet away, sound gets really thinned out and you start to hear more of the ambient noise. Now the general rules for microphone use apply here, but pay extra attention to mic placement in respect to unwanted sources. Due to the super-cardioid pickup pattern of the Beta 87A, it has a narrow pickup range at 180 degrees, or directly behind the mic. So unwanted sound sources need to be at an angle of 120 degrees from the microphone

 This is a super-cardioid microphone. It means it picks up what's right in front of it. This is a great microphone that is a favorite among singer-vocalists. It has really low self-noise

 It really only picks up what's directly in front of it too, so it's good if you're in a loud environment. The problem is that, as you can see, you have to talk right into it and it basically is going to be right in your shot. So, you know, it's not ideal and this is going to be true for most sort of boom-mounted mics that you're going to address directly. You'll often see people using them, but for me, I would prefer to have a microphone out of the way and out of shot
