This is why I generally recommend that people try out a canister in the store before they buy. That said, I've never found them too bad as long as you don't try to use them like an upright. I actually found an older Simplicity canister at the thrift shop that I've been using as my main vacuum for the past couple months and haven't had much trouble with (though I'm still an upright guy all the way).

When dragging the canister along on my hard floors, the hose's swivel point on the canister doesn't rotate unless I'm at an extreme angle from the machine, causing the vacuum to follow me at an angle on the swivel casters. The hose does rotate somewhat, but it's very creaky and I feel some resistance from it. Is there some way to lubricate this swivel?. The second is the more pressing issue, as it currently makes the vacuum a pain to use.
