Today I’m going to tell you all about Sirius XM, a satellite enabled radio service.

When you think about all the available options out there for audio entertainment, you’ve got music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, podcasts, audio books, and even internet radio services like Pandora, is there still a place for radio in your life?

Here’s the appeal. You get in your vehicle at any point. You can listen to the same old stations from your local area, or you can choose music from your phone - but sometimes we get sick of our same old libraries and playlists. So why not spice things up by accessing up to 160 channels in your vehicle.

Ignore that email for about a month and then before you know you'll start getting an offer for five months for $25 or six months for $30, I got a year for $60. Ultimately they'll give you offers for five dollars a month and even if you take those offers and after the month you know the months are over if you call them and tell them you're going to cancel they will give you that promotional rate again because they would rather have you paying five dollars a month than not being a subscriber at all. So looking on their website if you see that $15

 What's going on YouTube, it's Tyler here and today I'm going to be doing a review of Sirius XM Satellite Radio. I've had it for about a month now in my car, so I'm going to give you a full in-depth review, everything from the programming choices to reliability to prices, so you can make a decision about buying it before actually going through a possible year agreement. Now the reason I chose Sirius XM was because I'm a Grubhub driver, so I'm constantly in and out of my car doing deliveries and plugging in my phone, unplugging it, reconnecting it, choosing a certain playlist, choosing a certain station was just not feasible for me going in and out of the car all the time. In fact I felt it was kind of dangerous when I was driving and I wanted to switch the station, I had to whip out my phone, go on the menu, change the station that way

 Let me tell you that cost is not what you should be paying. Most of us pay about $5 a month and this is how you do it.  This seemed to get worse as time went on. Changing our internet service to a super fast fiber optic network did not solve the problem. No other internet-connected wireless devices exhibited such a problem whether on DSL or ethernet. Now the TTR2 only works if placed a few feet from the router, and it is even fussy about the placement

 I hooked it up today in the original location as the TTR2, which is downstairs from the router. It connected right away and stayed connected with no interruptions so far.

Mine seemed to work well for several months, but then had extreme difficulty connecting wirelessly to our router even though the display indicated that it was receiving a strong signal. It would sometimes work all day, then fail to connect for days on end. This seemed to get worse as time went on. Changing our internet service to a super fast fiber optic network did not solve the problem

 Grace Digital and Sirius/XM tend to blame each other for connection problems, but after moving the TTR2 to various locations in the house, I realized that it was a problem with the TTR2 itself. Connection problems have various symptoms such as: - Excessive buffering, sometimes getting stuck at 2% for a long time or indefinitely - Excessive and sometimes permanent "busy" condition (blue square) or hourglass - Freezing despite indications that it is not busy nor buffering - Not responsive to buttons (even the power button!) while frozen, necessitating plugging/re-plugging unit - Frequent timeouts - returns to main menu and remains there - Persistent messages "unable to connect to SiriusXM server" - Persistent messages "Request cancelled. Retrying." - Occasional temporary message "Unable to authenticate" Grace Digital recommended replacing it with a Mondo+ radio purchased directly from them (not available on Amazon!)

 Some folks just don't see the point in satellite radio when you can just as easily connect your phone to your vehicle and listen to your own curated playlists. There used to be two big competitors early on, Sirius and XM, but truth be told, it didn't take long for them to realize they could have a much greater reach if they just merged together. So they did and they became Sirius XM. Satellite radio has struggled to find its place in a world with so many mediums

 Now, you can also listen through your browser, through the Sirius XM app, or through smart speakers like Google Home or Amazon Echo. Let's go through each of these. First of all, let's hop in the Jeep. The experience will somewhat vary depending on what kind of stock stereo you have in your car

 Well, it does often work, but you will get occasional cutouts. Overall, this doesn't have a major impact on my ability to enjoy the service, but it's just a standard operating rule when dealing with satellite signals. You can also listen on the web or the mobile app, though I have to admit, I just started doing this recently. On the app, you can basically do the same types of things, but you can also send it through Chromecast if you wanna listen on a compatible speaker or display

 So let's start from the top. Why am I standing in front of my vehicle? Well, the most popular way to listen to satellite radio is in your car. I'll tell you more about my experience in a minute, but first, what does Sirius XM offer? Well, that depends on the plan you choose and how much you're willing to pay. The All Access plan offers over 350 channels

Satellite radio has been around since the early 2000s and now most vehicles come equipped with satellite radio capabilities. But it’s not such a novel concept anymore, especially because there are so many ways to listen to music, especially with the popularity of streaming services nowadays.

Satellite radio has struggled to find its place in a world of so many mediums, however, they’ve quietly become quite popular- with upwards of 43 million subscribers.

So the question is, is it really worth it, in 2020, when we have so many options? Well, let’s find out.

Overall - this is a neat unit by Sirius that untethers you from the car/truck radio SiriusXM and having to stream from your phone to various speakers. That's my primary reason for purchasing - I was tired of having to reconnect my phone (and find my phone typically) to different speakers in the house, and I didn't need another Sirius subscription to use the radio.  Pros: I like the fact it's an "all in one" - connect it to WiFi, enter your Sirius account credentials and you're off and rolling. Very easy setup

but it's far from stellar. I'm listening to it now and the sound pops and crackles at times, just like an AM/FM station. I hooked up a H/K speaker via aux connection and it sounds better, but since the source pops.

Easy to set up and get listening, but sound quality disappointing.

 Doing it is as simple as playing the show on your device and then touching the devices available option about halfway up the screen. Choose your nearby device from the list to connect in a second then you can use voice control on your smart digital assistant to play pause and adjust volume. Is your favorite show about to begin? Enable the reminder function in the app and get a message just before the show starts. Make sure the reminders are turned on in settings and then click the set reminder button on the show that you like

99 a month. I liked it and for the price of a couple of fancy coffees it's not a bad option. SiriusXM in-car packages start at about $11 a month and the all access package with 140 channels is about $21.99 a month

Being cooped up indoors and away from people definitely has me looking for more ways to connect and find entertainment. That’s why I decided to try on a Sirius XM satellite radio subscription. I’m Erin TGC.com and since I wasn’t in the car, I enabled the Sirius XM app so I could listen at home or when I was out on daily walks. Here’s what I learned after spending several weeks with the service.


Getting the service up and running is easy enough. You can call the Sirius customer service centre to get yourself connected, or go to their website. (The set up for enabling your car audio is a bit different so I’ll skip that for now; you basically need your radio number from inside the car.)

Download the Sirius XM app and enter your login and password. The app is very user friendly and easy to navigate. I opted for the Streaming only package called Premier, which gives you 300+ channels from music, to talk, sports and Howard Stern. 

To find some radio channels you might like, start with the Discover tab. You can see what’s available in Music, Sports, News, or Talk. The Discover tab will also recommend fan favourite channels and top-listened stations.

Got a few stations that you’re going to be putting on repeat? Tap on the station and then hit the star icon in the top right to mark it a favourite. When you go to your favourites tab at the bottom of the page, they’re all there; just like programming your presets on the car radio… only much easier!

When it comes to what I was listening to… I sampled a lot of content.
I’m loving Dr Laura’s no-nonsense advice on Triumph radio, LL Cool J’s Rock the Bells and Eminem’s Shade 45 have amazing hip hop and vintage hip hop, Symphony Hall  and Chill stations are great for chill out background music to work to. There’s dedicated music stations in every genre, and ccurated by a bunch of amazing musicians. 

There’s also a tonne of news and talk stations, from CNN, and Headline news, to Canada’s CBC Radio one and NPR.

While you can easily listen to your Sirius XM app online, on your phone or tablet, you can also stream to other devices like a Google Home or Amazon Alexa. Doing it is as simple as playing the show on your device and touching Deveices Available about halfway up the screen.

Choose your nearby device from the list to connect in a second. Then you can use the voice control of your smart digital assistant to play, pause and adjust volume.

Is your favourite show about to begin? Enable the reminder function and get a message just before the show starts! Make sure reminders are turned on on Settings, then click the ‘Set reminder’ button on the show you like. Does your car radio do that for you?

Let’s talk about the Benefits of Satellite radio
I’ve very quickly learned having the Sirius XM app has a lot of plusses.

Not only do you get access to a bunch of content, but you’re in control of how you access your content too. You can listen live, or restart a show from the beginning, or skim through it using the scrubber bar to skip the boring bits.

You can also go back and listen to the last few days of some shows using the app too. magic!

This has to be my biggest beef with this service: commercials. I’m old enough to remember when satellite radio started and it was meant to be commercial free; that’s what you were paying for it for. You’re still paying for it, so having to also listen to ads is a bit of an annoyance.

Some channels have ads running on the channel itself. Others, like CNN for example, where they’re broadcasting the TV signal, cut in with dedicated radio commercials during the TV breaks.

If you love sports, this entertainment package is pretty insane. Some of the higher tier packages including the All Access give you ever MLB, NFL, NBA, PGA NHL and NASCAR event and game all year long. No blackouts, no missed games, and no hunting for who’s carrying them.

Overall I can’t find much that’s negative to say about Sirius XM’s app. I love how many channels there are, and there’s content for every need and want. It’s easy to flip around, the reminders are handy and the favourites setting makes it easy to dial up my preferred stations. There’s also a tonne of choice, meaning you don’t have to be bored if you’re sitting at home, or commuting

On the downside, it’s those pesky commercials on some channels. But really, there’s so many channels (and ways to avoid the commercials) that you can sidestep them if you want to. I also wish there was more offline listening options and more content available for download.

 Now I can't use it anymore. It connects to my wifi fine, but every time I put in my Sirius credentials it says "Cannot connect to Sirius. Check your internet connection." The internet connection is fine for my five other devices, including the old TTR-1 radio

 If you don't have one of these, don't waste your money. You're better off buying a used iPhone, downloading the Sirius app, and plugging it into a speaker.  On the plus side, the sound quality is very good.

Slow, unstable, unusable

 I find this to be a very good radio. Here are my pros/cons  Pro: Very good speaker quality. Even on low volume the sound fills a room. On Demand accessibility
