Solid State Logic SSL2 and SSL2+ USB Audio Interfaces Overview

  Verdict: Not a professional type of device if you experience clicks and pops even at 256 buffer, and forced to go up from there to avoid artifacts.  It's a no-go for audio engineer. Probably cool for someone that just plays Youtube or games, but anyone who likes to have loud enough output in headphones will find out that it can't drive your headphones.  Wouldn't use it for mixing

 Still not as strong as Saffire Pro 40 or Scarlett 18i20 Lows are nice and crisp Mic pres sound great for darker mics 4K gives a nice harmonic distortion You can blend raw input to output once it hits USB port on your computer.  Cons: Too much sibilance even for Neuman U47 type mics, that will result in you using de-esser Headphone jack cannot drive certain headphones, too quiet Excessive buffer required while working in Cubase 5, worst I've seen on an interface Monitor output has a smile curve in EQ, highs are pretty high, and lows are raised.  And lastly, I used the XEQ on the kick drum just to take out some of the mid-range and add a little bit more low frequency, and here's how it sounds. The next thing we added to the track was the main sample in the session, which is coming from Native Instruments out of my MacBook Pro, and that's coming into the XLR inputs of the SSL2 Plus, this time now with the 4K setting engaged. In the mix, I used the XEQ2 to just shave off some of the low end to make a little more room for the bass in the kick drum. And here's how it sounds

Recording And Mixing With The New Solid State Logic SSL2+ Interface

 I had to call SSL's technical support to resolve these issues. The agent I spoke to was very helpful, but I still can't resolve the clicking problem. It remains to be seen what this interface's performance will be in a new operating environment. I may have to use a Mac to get useful results

 The SSL2 features a quarter inch headphone jack and a USB type C connection. I want to highlight that the SSL2 comes with two cables. One USB type C to USB type C and a USB C to USB type A cable. So regardless which of the two connectors your PC uses, solid state logic got you covered

 Finally, an audio interface that can record in 4K, but is it really better than Full HD? Hey, Julian Krause here and this is the SSL 2 from Solid State Logic. Let's check out its performance, have a listen to the 4K mode and also compare it to other audio interfaces like for example the Scarlett 2i2 and the Moto M2. But before that, let's have a look at the hardware side of the SSL 2. You can definitely tell that Solid State Logic has its roots in building mixing consoles, because the controls and the design of the interface is very much influenced by the design of professional consoles

 So it depends on your current project you're working on. That said, compared to other interfaces these are what I would call average latencies. Making high quality audio recordings is one thing but an interface should also be able to put out high quality audio. I'll quickly glance over the line level outputs on the back as they measured very well with a high amount of dynamic range and minimal distortion

 One more thing I measured is the round trip latency. This is the time it takes the audio interface to put out a signal and then record it again. So it is a combined input and output latency. You want this to be as short as possible to not perceive any delay when for example using an amp simulator with your electrical guitar

 I do with this thing had more outs but considering the price, it's all good. I don't have other products to compare the sound quality etc. I'm getting a strong audio signal and the 4k boost feature seems to help.

 And this last one really isn't a con, it is more of a suggestion for SSL. Since you have to push the line and high Z buttons to engage the instrument input, it would be nice to be able to push the high Z button, and that changes the impedance of the XLR microphone input to allow you a little bit more versatility in the tones you're able to get out of it, and the character you're able to get out of your microphone, like some vintage preamps had. So would I recommend the SSL 2 and SSL 2 Plus? Absolutely. I think this is an insanely good sounding audio interface, especially at the price

However, I think a lot of the features are mainly geared towards musicians, and they're not something that you would really use in a day to day voiceover situation. So why would you pick one of these SSL devices over a more feature packed device like the Motu M2? Mainly because of the preamps

 Now I want to do a very quick test to demonstrate what the legacy 4K switch does for spoken word. So right now I'm speaking into the Rode NT1 and I do not have that switch enabled and here is how the audio is sounding. I also would have liked to have seen the headphone ports on the front of the device for easier access, and so you don't have to route the cable all the way around to the rear of the device. It also lacks an on off switch, which is a huge bummer, sad face

Love the sound and quality of the product overall, my only complaint is that the type C port wiggles a little bit, and I worry it's delicate and might snap at one point. Other than that, great interface.

  What I also like is that both units are USB-powered (USB C & A). No more ugly power brick. If you have an Apple computer like I do, the unit is plug and play. If you’re a Windows fan, just download the ASIO/WDM Driver and you’re in business

 I’ve attached a Shure A15HP – In-Line Hi-Pass Filter to my unit and it does the job, but you can also filter your audio with a plugin in post.  I’ve read reviews that don’t recommend using low-impedance headphones with these units. Nonsense! My Austrian Audio Hi-X55 cans have a low impedance of 25 ohms, and sound magnificently detailed through the SSL headphone amps.  And then there’s the Legacy 4K effect

5 dbu EIN, and offer a gain range of 62 dB. That’s enough for very detailed and clean recordings.  In the back there are two studio-grade Neutrik mic/line combo jacks, and two 1/4″ outputs for your studio monitors. In addition, the SSL2+ has two 1/4″ headphone outputs as well as MIDI I/O over 5-pin DIN jacks

 What’s up with that? My Audient iD22 didn’t have one either. It’s less of a problem with the SSL2+ because it’s bus-powered, so it turns off when you shut your computer down.  The cord connecting the unit to the computer is too short. My preamp sits to the right of my iMac, and I needed a longer connection

Awesome and Affordable

 It may be ok for mice and keyboards but it is a disaster for audio. Always has been and always will be. It's not the direct fault of the device, but all USB audio devices in general (combined with today's generation of motherboards) when supplying power to the device - USB ground loops. USB is today's equivalent of the old RS-232 cable nightmare of the 80's and 90's

The sound is impeccable for a device not only in this price range but possibly 3x as much. I also own and use RME equipment, but for a small, lightweight, portable great sounding interface, it can hardly be beat. It has knobs spaced out to where you can turn them without crashing into something else. No software, no gimmicks, no hassle
