 The one thing I learnt having owned Sony IEMs (N3, M9, Z1R) is that their build quality is seriously second to none. Anyway, I wanted to venture into high end closed back headphones, and wanted something that would definitely last.

Ages ago when I was new to the hobby, I tried the HD800S and the MDR-Z1R at a local audio store and walked away feeling absolutely impressed by the 800S. The Z1R on an A-B session stood no chance against the 800S, it felt muffled and bloated in the bass. Reading online reviews about the MDR-Z1R also further cemented my decision to go with the 800S. As such, I vowed from that day to never touch the Z1R again.

Oh boy was I wrong.

In these few months, I bought the IER-M9 and the IER-Z1R. Both IEMs are so fantastic that I decided to keep them for different listening moods. The one thing I learnt having owned Sony IEMs (N3, M9, Z1R) is that their build quality is seriously second to none. Anyway, I wanted to venture into high end closed back headphones, and wanted something that would definitely last. Also, I felt that I needed some variety in the character of my headphones, therefore I just pulled the trigger on the MDR-Z1R and prayed for the best (and also because there was a good return policy). 

Oh boy was I blown away.

I slept on the MDR-Z1R so hard because it was not as bright as the 800S. They don’t sweep you off your feet at first, but these headphones are definitely up there with the best. Despite being closed backs, they retain a wide soundstage and have great detail retrieval (though not to the extent of the 800S). Sonically, they are warm sounding, with the best bass reproduction on any headphone I have ever tried. Punchy and detailed, yet controlled and refined. It is a Sony characteristic after all. The mids are thick and feel full while the highs are sparkly enough without being fatiguing. Add these all together, and you get one of the most engaging headphone ever built. I definitely regretted sleeping on these, but I have finally found something to contrast my 800S. 

Quick Comparison with HD800S:

For soundstage, the 800S feels like a concert hall, while the Z1R feels like you’re listening in a music room (backstage kinda vibe). Both are enjoyable to have, but depends on the track you listen to.

Genre wise, if I want something that feels grand like classical, with the music commanding me to listen attentively, the 800S is the way to go. But when I just want to sit back and chill, having the music warmly envelope me, then it’ll be the MDR-Z1R.

The main takeaway is, take the online bashing on the MDR-Z1R (or any headphones, really) with a pinch of salt, and audition them yourselves to see if you like them. While pulling the trigger on the MDR-Z1R so abruptly was not the best action I should have taken, it allowed me to relearn something so simple in the hobby - trust only your own ears.

MDR-Z1Rs are like a cult film. They're lauded by critics because of its frequency response and how it presents music inaccurately (which I can say is partially true, especially compared to the M9) but if you look at what users say about owning them you'll see it's one of the top most used headphones out of their collection. 

I've had the Z1R for a year and half now and I've put a *lot* of miles on them. I'm already on my 2nd set of earpads (Dekoni Elite sheepskin) and I've been enjoying them all this time. The build quality is still superb. No creaks or rattles.

What an enviable collection!

I am very fond of my lowly XBA-N3, lovely tone and very tightly controlled bass. The build is very impressive and it isn't an expensive earphone. I buy what interests me and try not to get caught up in hype and popular opinion.

“HD800S is my endgame...” The MDR-Z1R proves that wrong.

 I don't feel any excitement in the music from these. But the comfort is so good i might just keep these to wear all day. All my impressions are from se! Not balanced. Maybe the balanced makes these better

 But anyways coming from my current set up the m9s come up short. Sound : They lack the resolution of the 800s and the emotion of the Anandas. Comfort: These are a 9/10 very light and you barely notice them. You are able to wear them for hours without fatigue

 isolation: These block out 90% of outside noise in a normal environment.  In the sound department I'm left wanting more. I don't feel any excitement in the music from these. But the comfort is so good i might just keep these to wear all day

My audiophile journey so far...

My reference IEMs are typically: Earsonic EM-9, Sennheiser IE-300, Shure 846, and Aurisonic 2.5. I prefer lively, dynamic sound, with a mildly analytical side. The Sony manages to have several high-water marks: 1)Fine resolution of details: you will certainly find sounds in your recordings that you may not have found before 2) staging/imaging: pinpoint

 Polite and smooth treble. Bass has weight and moderate 'slam'. Note edges are soft, rather than sharp, but not to the point of 'boominess'. Midrange is more dry than lush, but still conveys emotion

 The midrange is the 'holographic' element of the soundstage. Treble, is extended but not sharp. Not airy, but also not dull. 'Balance' is the key word

 Instruments have excellent coherency and placement. Stage is deep, holographic, and only a bit narrow compared to the best. 3) Tonality: Warm, but still resolving. Sound is non-fatiguing, but still visceral

 I prefer lively, dynamic sound, with a mildly analytical side. Sony’s recent run of higher end audio geek stuff is well regarded;. - In ears: IER-Z1R, IER-M7 and IER-M9. - Over ears: MDR-Z7M2, WH-1000X series, MDR-1AM2. - Amplifier: TA-ZH1ES

I've got a pair of the wireless headphones and tend to prefer my samsung buds+. The Sony sound a little better, have ANC which is pretty nice, and a bit better ambient sound passthrough but aren't as comfortable for extended periods of wear, and are quite slow to change between regular playback, ambient sound, and noise canceling. Also while rare, the Sony pair will lose connection to my phone more frequently than the samsung pair. YMMV,  but I'm very particular about fit on in ear headphones, I find most be uncomfortable for longer than half an hour or so.

It hurts to hear someone say this about Sony. They are long time leaders in quality high-end audio. The MDR-R10s are still regarded as possibly the best headphones ever made. 

The Z1Rs are still my favourite headphones I’ve ever tried if paired with a decent amp and the ZX300 is my favourite portable DAC/amp for the money.

Anyone else find the WF are just complete garbage at calls, though? I LOVE them for travel, back when that was a thing, and the audio quality is great. But when Bluetooth connected to my phone or laptop, people couldn’t hear me (even in a private room, let alone walking around). Genuinely unusable. I bought AirPods Pro for calls and haven’t touched the WF in months...have they improved with firmware?

Same here, have had the WH-1000XM2s and the WF-1000XM3. The WFs are my daily bud drivers, and the WHs are my loud environment cans. Love them and have been a Sony fan my whole life. 
Wait until you dip into real Head-Fi though. Whole different world. My WHs have been neglected since the arrival of a headphone amp, couple DACs, EQ and DT-1770 Pro and Elegia.

I bought the FiiO EH3NC becuase i thought they were better built then the sony, what a horrible mistake, the sony are 100x better.

and when it comes to TWS, its the Sony and the AKG N400... and the sony have better controls.

When I saw both at bestbuy on sale last black Friday I had a real hard time choosing between the two. I've always been an over ear can guy but the convinence of in ears were very tempting. Ultimately went for the over ears and do not regret it one bit! Made the long flight in and out of pre-Covid China so much more tolerable.
