 I was kind of dumbstruck. This is where this and the other item, the I-Basso IT-0S, were later compared and where I found these to be much better. This had a nasally weird harmonic on the IT-0S. I think that's what they're called

 It doesn't sound as good from that source on this set and this is going to get its own review and it was supposed to be today but because I'm the... I'm right here

 Build quality is crap. Doesn't matter apparently. This is all about the music. The music sounds quite good on this set

Any of the main Koss open headphones using a specific pair of drivers (KSC-35, KSC-75, KPH-30i, Porta Pro), but I'd get a KPH-30i if you were going to pick one since it has more uses.  Although you can get some of the others with a mic now too.  One step up is the Grado SR60e IMO.  One step sideways but up in price (they're also closed headphones) is the ATH-M50x or MDR-7506 (although a bit boomy IMO). Anything else is pretty flavor of the month and hit or miss.  The above have all been made for decades and for good reason (well except the KPH-30i it's fairly new, but it uses the same driver).

edit: You could probably add the HD280Pro in there since a lot of people really like them.  Not really my flavor.

I’ve owned Focal, Audeze, Sennheiser, Fostex, and a few others... and I am loving the Phillips Fidelio X2 hr. It is a fun headphone. They are definitely v-shaped, but have great soundstage and are really comfortable. The bass may be looser than some headphones, but have great presence. You don’t need an amp to power these and they are affordable (at least for this hobby). These really surprised me, and I really recommend trying them.

If we include iems, I'd definitely put the Tin series up there. I own the T3 but they're all fairly comparable to each other. Out of the box they're already pretty impressive but eq is what really makes these shine. Koss is the king of budget headphones. Pick your favorite flavor; I prefer the PortaPro. The wireless version is good too.

HD 58X. I also own the 6XX which is slightly cleaner sounding, but the 58X does some things better like sub bass extension and impact/dynamics. A steal even at the current $170 price.

In my experience the "living up to the hype" is usually achieved by iem's up to this point.

You can @ me all you want, but the former sounds very uncolored to my ears, and latter, everyone knows what they sound like.  It's in every studio, venue, church, radio and TV stations for a reason.  In a pinch, I'll take the SRH-440s.

Creative Aurvana Live SE: their bio cellulose driver is very dynamic, pretty balanced and take EQ really well, decent soundstage. 
The build is meh, earpads are small if you have big ears, but they sound like several times their price

Sennheiser HD 558. I recently directly compared them to HD 6XX with my atom amp. I feel like some may jump down my throat over this, but I didn't really notice much of a difference. After I upgraded, I gave my cousin my HD 558 a long time ago. He brought them over to see what they sound like with an amp. I bought them used, used almost daily. He uses them nearly daily. They STILL are pumping out amazing sound.

I just feel like anyone asking for budget headphones, would also like one that's pretty guaranteed to not break on them.

I’m kinda new to the whole headphone thing but a few months ago I picked up the Soundcore q30s they’re Bluetooth and the app allows you to adjust the eq. They are also noise canceling and have a nice long battery life. The only cons are they are a little heavy and IMO the ear cups have a bit of a break in period. But overall for $80 they’re a good all around pair for if you want to be able to take calls then watch video and listen to some music.

I have a few sub $100 headphones and like all of them. Koss is the budget king, IMO. I like the KSC75, Porta Pros, KPH30i and the Pro Dj100 a lot. The Dj100 don't get much love but they're better than most people assume. They aren't very sensitive though and need a decent amount of power to sound good, so among the budget headphones, not the best option if you're trying to get the cheapest good sound you can. 

Monoprice Modern Retros are fun cheap gaming cans. Or to watch Michael Bay movies.

A little more than $100, but $109 should be close enough to be considered...and that'd be the Audeze iSine 10 B-Stocks.  Wasn't expecting much, but tbh they sound every bit as good as my Sundaras with a little more oomph in the low end.  They do need to be EQ'd on some devices (my PC with Schiit stack, and also a Hiby R2) but on my OnePlus 6T they were perfect as is oddly enough.  

For the price would recommend to anyone really.

I really enjoy the OneOdio Studio Pro 50s. I use these for video work as well as gaming (if I need a microphone for PS4) and honestly, they're really nice. I've seen people trash them but I really don't understand why. I enjoy the sound (they're DJ phones so obviously they have a bass bump) and they're not made out of crap. The ear cups are massive and really soft too so they're fairly comfortable.

Are the Sony XM4s a good headphone choice or should I just go all in on the Sennheiser HD 800s? 

Related to that, do I need to buy an amplifier if I get the HD 800s?
