 This powered my Defendant Technology Mythos STS tower speakers, those speakers were four grand for the pair and this had no problem powering those along with my other speakers. Sony states it's 145 watts per channel, it's not, it's not. Once you have all channels powered, you're probably looking at around maybe 60, 65, maybe 70 watts per channel for 8 ohms. Different modes up front, you got your push power button, you got your AMB speakers, tuning mode for your radio, different buttons on the front for your two channel, multi channel mode, movie mode, music mode, night mode, so you can go into different dims so at night you don't have to have it as bright for your different type of display and you got your big rotary volume and input selector and on the remote you just, you can just do everything, you can go into the GUI on the TV and do all your settings and such, your calibration and such and on the back, which is your typical back, swing it around here, as you see it's pretty simple, nothing too extravagant, you got your wire hook up for your channels for your speakers, again this is just a, it's an entry level AVR, your front, center, surrounds and you can use this for rear surround or height surround and you can also biamp it, you have 5 HDMI for your gaming, streaming, cable and such and then eARC for your TV and so then you have some RCA jacks, coaxial, optical, it's nothing, it's nothing too complicated, it's pretty, pretty simple

This is something for someone who lives in a small living environment, they might just have a bedroom, a small living room, they don't have a big area to fill and they might just have to be on a budget, copy. So yeah, budget, this is about two years old and these sell for, still being sold, anywhere from $400 to $450

Is the Sony STR-DH790 Dolby Atmos AVR right for you?

1 has better on screen menus than brand new Sony 7.1 unit.  Sony has been building A/V receivers since at least 1990, I had a 1990 Sony unit, which honestly for what it was was better than this new unit. How could Sony build A/V receivers for 32 years and design such a lackluster product that is in every aspect but one bested by a 2006 unit?  Yes, I could have spent $150 more for a competing brand's unit

 Could it have hurt you Sony to have included a $0.10 LED so a user can see at a glance where the volume is set? Or at least paint a white strip on the volume dial?  Old Onkyo 7.1 has better on screen menus than brand new Sony 7.1 unit

 Which means it can't have one remote control change power and volume. And since that is such a huge usability issue I had to upgrade. Who wants to be forced to use 3 remotes today to controlled from what should be one unit?  Old Onkyo 7.1 sounds better than brand new Sony 7

Very Average Unit, Corners Cut

 Emergency flashlight with three different settings on it. So a really cool unit. What's really cool is this screen on the front that tells you battery life, how much battery is in here, how much battery consumption you're using. Really cool

 So we have a few buttons towards the top, so speaker button here, we can turn our speakers on and off, or we can turn on the speaker A, speaker B, and then we have our tuning mode for AM, FM, two channel or multi input so we can change our listening formats here, movie, music, and night mode, then we have a display button where we can change what's being shown on the display, so we can show volume, we can show our source input, we can show our sound format, and back to volume there, and then we can dim that screen or turn it off completely with that button, and then our Bluetooth pairing here, and pure direct mode there. So input selector, this allows us to go through all of our multimedia options here, so FM, AM, TV, Bluetooth, media box, Blu-ray, DVD, satellite, cable, gaming, and CD, and then it loops all the way through, and of course we have our volume knob, which is actually pretty solid feeling, so not bad at all, not bad at all. So guys, I want to talk to you guys, what do you think the reason is, let me get in frame here, what do you guys think the reason is, that nobody's really buying Sony, I think maybe it's marketing, maybe people aren't hearing enough about it, maybe they're not keeping up with the rest of the industry, I'm not sure what it is, but in my experience, I like to watch YouTubers and watch other people do reviews, and not many people talk about Sony receivers, or even in Subscriber Showcase, we have done five or six seasons of Subscriber Showcase, and nobody's ever had a Sony receiver in their submission, so I just kind of wonder what's going on in that regard, so what we're going to do, the purpose of this video is of course to unbox it and see what it's about, but in Monday's video, I'm going to have a review on this, I'm going to plug it up to the system in my living room and really listen to it, watch movies and listen to music, play around with the settings, I'll show you guys calibration, and kind of see what it's all about, and see if maybe this is something that's being slept on, this may be a gem hidden in plain sight that most people are looking past, so I'm going to take a look into this and see what's going on, and maybe this is a bang for your buck, if it is, we'll definitely put it on a bang for your buck episode, so stay tuned for the full review video, I'm going to dive in deep into this thing and really put it to its paces, and see what it's all about, and maybe we can put Sony's AV receivers on the map with some of the big dogs like Marantz and Denon and Yamaha, maybe something like that, so if you're interested in me doing this in a different brand, like maybe Pioneer, something like that, if you have a brand you want to know more about, let me know down below in the comment sections, and maybe I can pick up one of their receivers and see what they're about, and all that good stuff too, so leave me a comment down below guys, and let me know, have you ever owned a receiver or stereo integrated amplifier from Sony, anything like that, have you ever owned anything like that, and if you did, what was your experience, did you like it, was it in, did you swap it out for something else, did you keep it forever, let me know that answer down below in the comment section, hit that like button and subscribe if you are not already, we will see you guys in the next video, Keep This Guy Out, Peace.

Sony STR-DH790 AV Receiver | Why is No One Talking about This??!!

I've been happy with my home theater setup, using an AVR (a Yamaha RX-V381 until recently, now Sony STR-DH790) paired with the Boston Acoustics MS4000S 5.1 speaker set (5 satellites + a nice sub). Everything worked well, and I was very happy with the sound quality.

 I received it today. Setup was easy, it came with a microphone to auto calibrate once installed, it seems to be working fine so far, and the firmware version is up to date.  My only complaint is that it did not come in the original box and is possibly used. It was obviously re-packaged, there are a couple of places in the case that are repaired dents and one dent where the metal meets the plastic of the face

Purchased a Onkyo HTIB about 14 years ago. Have blown the HDMI board twice on the receiver, replaced w/ a Pioneer which went bad also had the sub go out, so have gone without for a few years. Everything still wired up, SKM-750XS surrounds mounted on wall with the matching 750XC in the cabinet and 750XF fronts mounted on stands. 

Doing a refresh of the area where this is (basement) and wanted to get things going again. Clearly given I purchased a HTIB previously I'm not hardcore with this stuff but still enjoy it enough to have ran speaker cable etc through ceiling/walls. 

So question is should I just grab a reasonably priced receiver (sub $500, eARC, preferably banana plugs) and a sub, or is this setup so weak I should just replace it all or give in and go with a soundbar :) ?

Have 5 Onkyo 750 speakers left from HTIB kit, need new sub &amp; receiver. Suggestions?

 I do wish the front panel screen was a little bigger/more complex but i know that would up the price too.  Features: ARC passthrough, 4k passthrough. Sound Presets, Remote is simple and gets the job done well. I like the Bluetooth option i stream high quality spotify to it every day

 I run Neutral X with some slight tweaks. Update 9/2 - Everything performs as expected - when I'm above 20 volume on my receiver is when I really notice the quality come out on everything.  Design: Minimalist, love it. wish the back connectors were all banana plug capable instead of bare wire but i'll live

I do think it does get a bit warm for my liking (I'm in IT, i like to keep electronics cool) so I may mod a computer fan on top to suck the air out and up

 9/2 update:I would HIGHLY recommend going with the Neutral-X preset. The sound presets on this device are not ideal and are the reason I'm taking it down from a 5 to a 4. You kind of have to live or die by the EQ presets in the receiver for each of your environments (game, mediabox, tv, etc). I want more customization and control but it's not an option with this receiver
