I mean what the hell If you even want a two-channel stereo setup and you're on a budget for the amount of money you get this for You're going to get so much more So and if you don't like it take it back I mean, you're not out much money. It's it's not it's not as good as my two-channel main rig set up But for $399 it gets really really close So I Just want to let you know my kind of journey to this because I Couldn't believe that for this amount of money that I would get what I got so I So I Replaced it with a Ankyo TX RZ 830 and well Nope nope nope a lot more power did not sound nearly as good in two-channel It did do a 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos setup on its own this one doesn't It only does it dole the Atmos speakers in the front But it sounds so much better that had a had a had to keep this one, but So and it broke so I returned it And so then I tried a Denon 4500 and Well, that was better a lot better and I Don't know I don't know It's just it's just the two-channel didn't sound as good as the Sony And that's incredible $399 I got this for so You know the Denon 4500 is going for 1100 I think you could get it at fries for like $899 and Which is a hell of a deal, it's actually really good, but for two channels stereo listening This sucker is amazing it really is So this is why I'm doing this video, so You know if you have a small room, and you just want an Atmos setup for the two front channel height channels Go for it Sony did a hell of a job with this receiver So it has a lot of clarity a lot of deep bass As a great soundstage It's fun to listen to it seems kind of effortless in the way it presents music And it sounds like like some really good two-channel receivers that I've had I really really am blown away by How well this is performed and kind of makes me happy so Another thing I want to say is this Sony has been flawless everything works It's easy Everything that the chromecast works great airplay works great You know I hooked up Blu-ray player hooked up my Roku stick

Sony STR-DN1080 Review for 2 channel stereo + 5.1.2

I had a very old reciever with Dolby pro logic surround before and recently upgraded it the the Sony dn1080 and wow what a difference, the reciever is awesome and has given new life to my speakers. This reciever gets a lot of hate on here but I really love how dynamic and clear it sounds.

Hello, just wanted to show off my very budget frankenstein 5.0 setup and let people know you don't need to spend thousands for a very enjoyable experience. My wife and I moved into our first house about 6 months ago and I claimed the basement lol.

Old 46" Samsung 1080p non smart tv 
Samsung 4k BluRay player UBD-M7500
Sony STR-DN1080 AVR
L/R - cerwin vega D5's
Center - Klipsch KV2
Surrounds - Athena point 5 mkii
Custom old "gaming" PC

I was gifted the vega's and the tv from my in-laws, found the center channel, surround speakers and BluRay player for cheap on Kijiji and the AVR on Amazon a warehouse deal. The surround speakers came with another set of book shelves, center and stands but need to refoam them, once I do that going to add rear surrounds for a 7.0 setup as a have the room in the rear. Mostly for curiousity to see if it sounds that much better.

Yes I understand my basement does not have the greatest acoustics as the ceiling is unfinished and the floor is concrete, it is echoy but not horrible with the furniture and area rug.

Then I want a Sony 950 65" as I miss the quality of my 4k HDR tv upstairs and looking for something even better and bigger.

And down the line Atmos channels once the basement is finished so not anytime in the near future.

Other than that I am very happy with my with setup and enjoy every second I get watching movies on it. You don't need to spend a lot of money to get a decent home theater experience in my opinion. Always look for deals on local used websites as you can always piece together something decent that would make you happy. Friendly reminder to be happy and enjoy what you have.

Mostly good product, with a fatal flaw

Alright ladies and gentlemen, here we are finally with the review of the Sony STR-DN1080

 What we want to do is go to setup and then we go to easy setup and then it asks to select a language and then we go into speaker settings and it talks about starting the calibration. Now we do have to plug in the microphone to the front of the unit and Sony does something different here, they use a stereo microphone which is kind of different, everybody else uses a mono one so I thought that was pretty cool. All right so it states that the main zone 7.1 with height speaker not set, so we need to scroll down to change surround back speaker assign

On the next screen scroll down to select height speakers, then it asks you about your speaker layout, ours is 5.1 select that, then you select the type of overhead speaker you have, either front height, top middle, front Dolby or surround Dolby

 I selected top middle and then it asks to set the ceiling height, I put it at nine feet. So in comparison to the other AVRs that I tested out the Sony actually has a lot more power at least perceived power is a lot more than the others. Now this does run for $599 sometimes you can catch it on sale for $499 but the other AVRs started around $599 or $500 and are now down to like $300 $350 I know the Yamaha is down to like $300 and I think the Onkyo is down to $350 but that could be the reason why it has a little bit more power and it's not dropping in price just yet. Now I watched a lot of content in the last couple of weeks and Sony did a phenomenal job of representing all the different types of audio formats I tossed in there

 One thing it would constantly do is switch sound settings without me telling it to. I would set it up for Dolby Digital, and it would automatically switch to 'Front Surround' preset for no reason. I would have to hit the 'direct' option to get it to go back, and eventually it would kick right back to 'surround font' processing, often shutting off my center speaker.  My wife is not tech savvy at all, and doesn't always need the surround sound receiver on to watch TV

 Their tech support is free for the entire life of the unit, and they have knowledgeable staff about all their products.  I can not begin to tell you how much more happier I am that I went to the Denon. Not only does it operate the way it is suppose (outperforming the Sony), but it sounds even better as well. The remote is laid out better, but even more then that, they have a smart phone remote app for it

 Even after logging in to the internet via wi-fi and updating to the latest firmware, there was a lot of buggy/clunky operation to this unit.  One of the things I was not impressed with was the remote. It is not laid out the best, and I couldn't select all the inputs with ease from it. For example, there is no Bluetooth button on the remote

I would have to physically change to the Bluetooth option on the unit itself, or I would have to turn the TV on and change to Bluetooth via the GIUI. Not a MJOR issue, but annoying to say the least

 So really really handy from that point of view because again it's sort of consolidating all of them different inputs that you may want to put into your television but don't actually have enough HDMI inputs. So again it's really expanding out that range and really sort of bringing together that one point of contact and that's the remote. Now again you can use the application that you can download onto Android or iOS devices so again really giving you that flexibility. So if I select Spotify what it's doing is it's automatically knowing what Spotify service I have on my device is using Spotify connect and what it will do is it will bring up the last music that I was playing

2 channel capability giving you a absolutely rich immersive experience from a surround sound point of view. Now it comes with Dolby Atmos support so it's really giving you this immersive and ultra realistic experience from your music or your videos or your films that you may be watching. It also as well comes with DTS-X support, now this is giving you a totally different experience when it comes to audio, it actually tries to base audio on an object basis. Now this allows for real life audio experience so in effect you feel that if you are listening maybe to an orchestral piece of music or you're listening to something whereby it's an audio based on maybe a film or a video or something, you actually feel as if you are there, it replicates pretty much real life experiences

 So again I can control it from my mobile device or I can control it from my remote here. So let's just press play and away we go. And there we go. Amazing

Sony STRDN1080 Review

After a year of sobriety I can afford to step up my speaker game. Monitor Audio Bronze series.

  + Bluetooth support is good. Can stream from my Pixel C (and with Android 8.0, now it supports LDAC so slightly higher quality than older Bluetooth streaming) or Amazon Echo with no issues. + Remote works well without having to actually point anywhere near the receiver, as long as I'm not aiming at the opposite side of the room

Functional, but more to complain about than compliment

 One of them connects to your TV and has enhanced audio return channel, so you can get surround sound from whatever you're watching on your TV, including its built-in streaming apps or the over-the-air TV tuner. The other HDMI output can send the same or a different video source to a second TV in the same room or in another room. It's super flexible. It's also great for listening to music with all the ways you can get music into the receiver

 It has Bluetooth, but you'll probably prefer to send the music over your Wi-Fi using Apple AirPlay, Chromecast, or Spotify Connect. And if you want to take advantage of your high-res music options, this receiver is good to go for playing high-res files up to 24192 and DSD files up to 5.6 MHz from a USB drive or from your networked computer. There's also many ways to control this receiver

 The included remote. You can control it from an app on your phone. You can even use your existing Google Home smart speaker to tell this Sony receiver what to do. It uses Bravia Sync to make it work seamlessly with other Sony Bravia Sync components like a TV, and it has a nice intuitive on-screen user interface
