 Parting thoughts, I think the Chaparral is a great little knife at just north of $100, I think it represents a good value, you get the premium steel, exceptional fit and finish from the Taichung Taiwan factory and then you've got Spyderco's just signature very very practical design, thumb hole, great ergonomics, just general thoughtfulness that Spyderco is known for in this small discrete package that you can carry every day and open up and use it and nobody will bat an eye at it so I just think that it's a really practical choice, I like the Chaparral a lot and recommend it if you're at all interested in the knife.  There's an internal stop pin and apparently that functions similarly to the triad lock on a cold steel lock back and that is designed to have a lot of the pressure hit that stop pin than rather hit the tang and the back spring of the back lock and what that will do is prevent up and down play which does develop on some of the other Spyderco lock backs namely the Endura and Delica, the Japanese plastic handled Spyderco lock backs are notorious for developing up and down play and this was a move on Spyderco's part to try to mitigate that and so far I mean it totally works, there's no issues here with blade play up and down side to side, very robust so I think that that was a good choice to put that stop pin in there. Anyhow, that pretty much takes us through the entire knife, all the features and specs and my thoughts on it.  Let's pull the Sage I off the table and take a closer look at the blade on our Chaparral here and it has that signature spider coat leaf shape profile, it's been given a satin finish and a full flat grind. Blade stock is thin, it's only 2 millimeters thick. Let's compare that real quick with the Sage I that has a 3 millimeter thick blade. You can see it's a big difference and it translates not only to the weight and size and thickness of the knife but also the cutting performance

It is perfect for opening packages, mild food prep, maybe peeling or cutting up an apple, that's something I try to do that every day and the knife like the Chaparral is perfect for something like that, cutting plastic, paper, just your general kind of mild EDC chores, this is a great blade shape for that

Spyderco Chaparral Review

Birthday is coming up and can’t decide between the two. Spyderco chaparral or the para 3? Pros and cons? I wanted something bigger than the dragonfly and I like the size of the chaparral but I like the compression lock of the para 3. 🤔 also, this is for a female with small hands.

 There are differences in blade steels between manufacturers as well. Spyderco's S30V is head and shoulders better than that used by Kershaw and the D2 used by Benchmade is much better than that used by Ontario in their RAT1 with the old RAT in AUS8 still being one of the best bang for the buck knives out there for the price. Some blade steels will dull easier yes, but they'll also be easier for the average user to maintain as well. And in real world use not many can differentiate between most good mid-range steels anyway

  (August 2, 2017 Update)  Over a few months now of ownership the knife has loosened up somewhat and is much easier to open and close although I'm still not enamored with the sharp 'Spydie' hole. The knife is a very solid knife and while worthy of anyone's consideration looking for a knife of this type, due to carrying it less and less in favor of some of my other knives of this genre I will be parting with mine. Don't let this be an indictment of the Chaparral if you are considering buying one. It's a fine knife; I've just decided to move on from mine in favor of something other than a Spyderco

 The only thing I disliked about the knife upon initial inspection was its unusually stiff lock back blade release. Comparing it to an older Delica and Endura I have it is considerably more difficult to compress in order to close the knife and while it has loosened up some with use, it still requires more energy than the aforementioned Spydercos. Time will tell if it becomes easier to use and I will amend my rating at a later point if it does. All in all the Chaparral in a very nice package in the role of a small gentleman's folder and one I know you would like if you're looking for a knife to fill this role

 Spyderco's strong point has always been for the most part their fit & finish and their out of the box blade edge integrity both in sharpness and blade edge evenness. The one I received was perfectly finished with all the parts machined perfectly uniform and fit to perfection. It has CTS-XHP blade steel and while the only experience I have with this steel is in a couple Cold Steel knives I own I'm sure it will perform the menial tasks required of such a small knife fine although I doubt it would be as easy to sharpen as some other variants might be. I've come to sharpen my blades less and strop more in the past couple years and found it to preserve edges better while taking off less metal so it's become my preferred edge maintenance

 But anyways, so that's, I guess, my opinion on the Chaparral. It's that it's still a very, very nice knife, and for the price it's still very hard to beat. I don't know of anything that can beat it for a gentleman's carry, but that lockback thing is a big deal, and I really hope they work on that in your Chaparral 2 or something like that. If you're thinking about the Chaparral, get it from someplace where you can get out of it quickly, whether that means you bought it used, you go to an actual physical store where you can touch the knife and try the lockback, or whether, you know, you just get it from someplace with a return policy. Regardless, you want to really try this lockbar to see if it's a pain for you and your particular thumb. For me it is, and it's enough of a pain that I'm starting to look around for other things in this category of a small office EBC kind of knife

My collection after a year on knife_swap. Which Spyderco should I get next?

 The result is that it's difficult to close this knife with one hand.  This sounds like two problems but I actually think it's the same problem exhibited in two ways. The spring pressure on the back of the blade is high and that makes it hard to open and any dirt in there makes it feel gritty. The high spring pressure also makes it hard to unlock

  I'm no knife designer, but I think the high spring pressure may be necessary in order to lock the very thin blade. A thicker blade would give more surface area between the blade and the lock and could use less pressure. This may be all wrong, but I'd like to think there is a functional reason for the lock that I really don't like.  I can't understand how these knives get out of the factory feeling "Gritty"

 I carry my Sage Titanium the most and it's usually in my pocket in our business casual office. I carry this when I dress up a bit or wear suit, it disappears in the pocket. Top materials, great fit and finish. I've put it to some fairly hard use and it's durable despite it's thin design

 I measure from the tip to the furthest I can get out on the steel stock here. The stock thickness, by the way, measured at this point is 2 millimeters or 0.079 inches. The blade width, so the span in this direction is 26

Suggestions: I bought this little Buck for $30 about 7 years ago. It has been a good little knife for edc. I want to upgrade to something a little nicer, that could hold an edge for longer and can open with one hand.

 The blade simply doesn't deploy nearly as easily as, say, the Sage 1, which the Chaparral's appearance so closely mimics. I've managed to loosen it a bit through use, but I don't think this knife will ever open as easily as most of my other Spydeys. It's a shame because it's such a truly handsome EDC blade.  It's great for paper, great for apples. This is just a slicing machine. That also means that this is not going to be an excellent hard use kind of blade. You're not going to be doing much from the way of batoning with your Spyderco Chaparral, but that's okay

 If we look at the lockback button on your Chaparral compared to your Delica, you can see that the Delica lockback here is a lot thicker than your Chaparral. And when you actually go to lock up your Chaparral, like this, you really need to press in a fair amount and it digs into your finger a pretty good bit, and it's not a super painless process. And this is not a knife you're going to be in and out of your pocket every day, or every moment of every day for, but nonetheless that's a minor, that's kind of an issue. And it's the only thing I don't really like about this knife, and just not a big fan of
